I would for sure! mho  just an added bit of protection.
Most people I know that have a good hardware FW also use a Software Firewall

Some of us will say it's enough. Less resource intensive.
Other will like the possibility of configuration that allows the software firewall and extra outbound protection.

Yes even you are safe with your hardware router/firewall, it is always good to have some software one installed just in case... plus as others already mentioned, outbound protection is not covered with your hardware one, well at least in most cases (some hardware firewalls provide outbound protection too).

That's why I've been searching for some good, most important - light on system resources outbound protection to install it instead of some bulky all-in-one firewall, "Jack of all trades - master of none". My hardware firewall and this software one would be quite good buddies, and I'm pretty sure system wouldn't be so tied up with bunch of heavy security applications running in the background all the time.

Hi Sasha!
You don't mentioned what software firewall you are using?

As I said... still searching for some good and light firewall. At the moment, I use PC Tools Firewall although I am not quite pleased with its performance. Firewall choices when it comes to Vista, are not that good. Use what you can and there is no room for being picky unfortunately...  :-\

I'm still waiting for some good firewall... hope not too long. On my Mac I use Little Snitch, and if there is a version of LS for Windows, I know what my Windows firewall would be.

try Comodo LoL

personalfirewall.comodo.com

The funny part is where it starts with "LoL".

Comodo is everything but light on system resources. It started as good firewall, but it looks like it's becoming more and more bloated with anything and everything... worst of all, it simply doesn't work properly on most Vista machines.

Quite a few Windows XP's have the same problem with Comodo.
On my system it's never been anything but a dragon.
Every time I try it again, it's dragon me off line.  :'(

Well actually I use Comodo now, but somehow I can't properly maintain the LAN between my PC'c (Actually 4 for now), & I need it to create ICS ;(

Exactly! Home Networking sometimes works and sometimes not... even though everything is properly configured and my home network IP range is specifically set to allow traffic in Comodo, again... sometimes works, and sometimes none of my computers can discover another computers on the network.

After experiencing BSOD's last year with version 2 and later with version 3 and after receiving some strange advice on Comodo forums and reading how many problems it is causing to other users i am definitely avoiding Comodo. I'm not saying it's a bad firewall but it seems quite obvious to me that they are releasing versions without properly testing them first. No gold release IMO should have as much bugs as Comodo 3 has had(and still has). It should still be a beta or release candidate status. Just my 2 cents.

Comodo seems to also have done an excellent job of promoting it's product
regardless of how good or bad it is through it forum members.
I've never seen so many fan boys spread the praises of Comodo on all the various forums.

If this product works for you, and it doesn't for many, then use it.
IMHO, it's over rated and uses quite a bit of system resources. (my 2 cents worth)  :)

Comodo Personal Firewall worked 100% for me until last month it blocked the installation of some Windows Updates. Question mark is: Is it so much secure so than the other firewalls so to explain all these bothering behaviours it has from time to time (I'm sure WILL have ;)). I'm sure I'm not alone having had difficulties with Comodo but thank them the same for being there. :D

I don't get why everyone is hating comodo for some bugs in its program that the company is working out.  Yeah, it is annoying and a pain but just about EVERY new software product has these types of bugs.

(case in point: Ad-aware 2007.  It's updater has had tons of problems, especially with vista, and it has been a pain for me to use since it has come out; but I don't hear everyone complaining about Ad-aware like they do for comodo.  Why is there a double standard?)

And for the record...i'm not some kind of comodo fanboy.  I have only been on their forums twice (once to find out about the windows update problem that they shortly patched in a few days), and I'll admit that I don't like the protective feature for programs built into comodo and I turned this feature off.  (It acts a lot like Spywareterminator's HIPS protection feature, but would JUST constantly keep popping up when installing programs.)  All-in-all though, I still like comodo, and I give my support to all helpful programs that are free, helpful, and do a good job (including avast  ;D).

I do not complain about Ad-aware because I've uninstalled it both in XP and Vista: poor detection, lots of background services and drivers for an on-demand scanner, problematic updates.

I uninstall Comodo on Vista: too many problems on my side. Since from installation the network driver to preventing Windows Updates installation. Requires Defense+ for parental application control. Too bloated in popups... still far from being gold...

I use Adaware without problems. SOMETHING I WANT TO SAY:IS AVAST HOME EDITION JUST AN EXCEPTION TO THE RULE? I mean I never had any sort of issue what-so-ever with AVAST. Thanks to AILWIL and they show respect to us by making sure we have never to go in what Comodo lets us experience. It's incredible to hear how people are so Comodo-bound just because it's free. ;)

Lol, no offense but I find this funny.  Avast is not an exception to the rule.  Many people have had problems with it in the past and now, although avast does work hard to get it solved.  I mean, people having problems with avast is one of the reasons avast even has a forum, lol.  I don't think any program is without its problems.

Your right but there is one big difference, when I have a problem with avast! it usually gets solved and the problem never gets erased from the forum.
If you have a problem with Comodo, and it doesn't get solved, your entry mysteriously disappears from their forum.  :(

I feel the same as Bob, from time to time there.

Without being stubborn, to put AVAST and Comodo Firewall on the same  "pied d'estale" (level) is a stupid aberration. I have had AVAST for ten years now on 4 different computers and my life was easy!!! I almost never had any virus and the ones I got were rapidly destroyed. I don,t know what to expect from Comodo. It's a big question mark...!!! ???

I wouldn't say "avast does work hard to get it solved" because avast! certainly does not do that. Alwil is who works hard to solve those problems and of course we all, regular forum members who're at least trying to bring these issues to their attention.

Comodo... simply went down all the way almost to the bottom with its few latest releases... I am not glad it happened, but I don't keep my eyes closed so I see what's happening with Comodo lately.

Hi Philly!!! ;DWell, just too let you know I updated my old XP computer (I open it now 1-2 times a month) with Comodo 3 Personal Firewall still on. The latest version is OK now with the Windows Updates (don't know if there was a problem on XP???On Vista for sure!!!). Only problem compared to the settings with my Vista PC TOOLS PLUS FIREWALL are the settings and DEFENSE + ON but its ok for me like that, even with all those alerts popping up every now-and-then every time you try to do something. No, I don't want a future in BLACK for Comodo 3 Personal Firewall, that's for sure. But I do A DAY-TO-DAY use of it, and they must be reliable, not just from time to time. Avast is 100% RELIABLE, I've seen few security softwares like it!!! That's also why Comodo should try to be more "user-friendly" in its forum dedicated to its softwares! ;)
