Post by: Spyros on January 22, 2008, 10:31:19 AM
Read all about it here --> http://blog.chip.de/0-security-blog/security-suiten-2008-im-test-q12008-20080122/
If you don't speak German, just read the titles, they're almost the same as in English.
Way to go, avast!

Wow good news Avast is better than AVG

It is good but not really news!  ;D

Seriously, Avast rated surprisingly well in regard to rootkits.  FPs were not so good.

This is great news.  I loaded Avast free on my daughter's laptop last summer just before she went to college and she hasn't had an infection yet.  Such test results confirms why.  Avast is just plain good and it works very well with Vista Home Premium.

There are a couple of topics relating to version 5.0 (so a forum search should help), the features are however, not cast in stone, but it will be very well worth the wait.

avast! is in ongoing development for version 5.0, but who knows we might well have other program updates before that. One thing for sure if you monitor the forums, you will find out here 'first.'

LdPinch infection is rather dangerous. I'm sure that you should change passwords form you ICQ, mail, sites etc.

AVG anti-spyware is better than adaware, but it does seem not to be developing at the pase of others like SuperAntiSpyware.

Sorry I don't use any of the comodo products.

I think the short answer is that there are many ex AVG users who are now happy avast users.

I swear I read the same site yesterday and it said  avast! was worst than AVG... And it was saying that the detection rate was something around 80%-85%

I knew it was all a lie!  ;D

has anyone tried the new version ov avast? some are reporting problems . There is a very good news about it now we have an antivirus/spyware engine. is this a better engine than ST?

Is this a better engine than ST?
I have no doubts about it. Spyware Terminator could have, from time to time, in some cases a better detections due to signatures. But the engine (scanning machine), I'll trust on avast.

Do you know AVZ (http://z-oleg.com/index.php)?
Zaytcev Oleg  has tested ST on 2500 samples of viruses ITW - result 0, nothing has been detected.
The best antispy is antivirus...

Can't read Russian... but it's a very poor result if an user is using ST as the resident protection. I just have it as on-demand.

i think that ST ISNT A VERY GOOG OR SAFE SOFTWARE IN ITSELF.I HAVE ONLY TRIED ONCE AND IT GAVE ME A LOT OF TRUBLE. I THINK I WILL HANG ON AVG AS IT IS VERY SIMPLE AND A LOT FASTER THEN SUPERANTISPYWARE.SAS IS DREADFULLY SLOOOOWWWWWWWWWW.PLEASE KEP US IN TOUCH OF ANY NEWS POSSIBLE AND DO KEEP THE GOOD WORK ON

@ gery

Well something which doesn't cut the mustard (AVG-AS I feel has suffered a lack of development since it was bought from ewido) even if it is simple and quick really isn't worth having. AVG-AS has for some time now not been close to SAS and the fact that it will soon no longer be available as a standalone product isn't good. When that happens who knows if it will be supported with signature updates, etc.

There is a new version of SAS 4.0 just released to the public after beta testing and that is quicker on scans.

that is another truble for me . thank you for the warning. i have seen the thiong about AVG AS and it is smth really bad. i upgraded to avast 4.8 and i really dont see any trouble.can you specify why i should avoid CAAPS or something?thank you for your reply.I think it is a very good news that avast is an AS aplication too. good deal for us all . Do you know that i am considerin to envite all of my friends to switch to avast?i think it is a very wise thing. The little problem with avast is that when i scan the arcives it takes i don't know how long to finish scaninig. hope this will be fixed soon. the progress bar is perfect . at list we know what is going on now. greatings to every avast user on this forum and allllll

Using CAPS to emphasise a word is fine when you use ALL caps in computing it is considered shouting in many forums and news groups. Not only that large blocks of caps are hard to read.

It is good to invite your friends to use avast, but on the on-demand scans you don't have to scan archives, nor do you have to do a Thorough scan (perhaps the first scan you do Thorough+archives to check your system is clean). After that I would suggest a Standard scan without archives.

Archive (zip, rar, etc.) files are by their nature are inert, you need to extract the files and then you have to run them to be a threat. Long before that happens avast's Standard Shield should have scanned them and before an executable is run that is scanned. Thorough is also by its design very thorough and perhaps a little overkill for routine use, were a Standard scan without archives should be adequate.

I have only ever done a through scan with archives once shortly after installation just to ensure a clean start state, but with XP for example avast will do a boot-time scan after installation if you select it, this I believe will be quicker and reasonably effective. Like everything in life things are a compromise.

avast 4.8 is a beta version only at present.

You should be aware of possible problems with beta software and willing to accept them.  If you participate in the beta program please look for information on problems being reported and investigated in the beta forum at the top of the forum page.

If you are using a dial-up connection then there does appear to be a problem with auto-update that is being investigated by the avast team.

Please see this thread:

Probably this should be discussed in the corresponding beta topic http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=33718.0

This is unrelated to this topic and should be in the beta sub forum.

Where you would probably have seen the I started 'Auto Update no longer working' the link previously given by Alan and psw.
