Title: Problems with updates
Post by: coldpatrix on February 16, 2008, 10:35:20 AM
Hi to everyone,
i have a problem with Avast 4.7 Home Edition. My OS is Win98SE and Avast can't make the automatic updates. A popup message said that it's impossibile to reach port 80 and the program can't communicate with the server for the updates.

I tried to change all the settings in another way but, altought the changes, Avast gives the same problem.

What can i do to solve this problem?
Waiting for your reply...

Thanks a lot

How long have you had avast? Does your firewall allow avast.setup internet access?

What was your previous antivirus and how was it removed?

I have Avast on my pc since two or three month (previously uninstalled to try to solve this problem).
I don't have any firewall on my OS, and i have opened port 80 in my router.
I previoulsy had Kaspersky Internet Security and i removed it with the regular uninstallation and with a registry clean of unused voices of that program...

Okay, that rules out the firewall issue. Unless the router has a firewall that is not allowing avast.setup.

Does webshield seem to be scanning? And mail scanner is working?

Did auto updates work before? Do manual updates work?

Only Resident protection works. Webshield, mail scanner and Istant messenger protection don't work (they show the number 0 for the checked filed and for the infected file simultaneously).

Auto updates worked once or twice in this three months, but usually (now always!) don't work. Manual updates work correctly.

Webshield and the Internet mail scanner have to have the proxy set up manually in win98se. Not sure about IM.

for webshield see the above link.

Did you just do or have an auto program up date? That used to be an issue with 98/me. I always had to uninstall/reinstall after a program update as some features didn't work.

I have set the port 12080 on my lan configuration and on my router. Is even this the port for the automatic updates?

In this case, opening that port i have solved the problem...

After a reboot, now Webshield works!

I'm testing the IM with a trasfert of a file on Messenger...

And now...what about automatic updates?

Webshield only scans incoming. In 1hour 42 min 165 files, but I've been here most of that time.

Like I said, I don't use IM so I don't know if there is something else to setup.

I get an update as some as I start my computer. I've got the always connecte box checked. When I had dial up I had dial up box checked and recieved up dates when I connected.

Can you check there and see if anything is checked?

Right click the "a" icon, program settings, update conections.

Other than that, I'm out of ideas.

I have checked everything and your setting are even the mine.
A question: i have a dsl connection. I have to check the dial up box or not?

P.S. Thanks a lot for your support!
In this case, only two providers are active: Webshield and Resident Protection, right? I don't use any mail program, i don't want to check p2p...so is it correct?

DSl, always connected.

Webshield, standard shield(resident protection), Instant messenger(if you want to use IM), and network shield should be enabled.
