Post by: Chi_08 on March 24, 2008, 01:29:33 PM
Hi

I've been having endless problems with avast hope someone can help me.
My Avast keeps giving me an error when it refuses to start up it says
1. avast: The AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error
2. 42040=VPS file was detected

Whatever is happening my antivirus stops working period. When i've tried to update Avast it updates and works perfectly well for like a day then the following day it stops working and start giving me the above error messages. i don't know what else to do!!!!!!!

Someone please help!!!!!  :'(

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing.

If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

Do you have any other antivirus installed in your computer?
Did you have in the past? Which one?
Do you use a firewall? Which one?

Also, take a look into Administrative Tools > Services
and see how the four avast services are set to start (automatically or manual).

Also, check your system time and date and if your registration is still valid (14 months).

i tried the repair option and it didn't work when i tried it. i've had norton on before then i removed it. then avg briefly also removed it. they where both highly useless antiviruses.

I've also gone to services and checked if they automatically start and they all do. i've even stopped and restarted them to no avail.

:-) i've been avoiding uninstalling avast. but it seems i might have to try that out.

thanks

How?
Norton is notorious to cause RPC errors...
1) Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel (or any other Symantec product). Boot.
2) Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Norton_Removal_Tool_for_Windows_2000XPVista/1169144666/1). Boot.
3) Install avast! (or repair the installation) and boot.

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Use Avast Uninstall (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the last version.
6. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.

i uninstalled it and rebooted it. then reloaded it. it still packed up on me after about 4 times of normal starting up of my pc. i'm not sure wats wrong... maybe there is something avast doesn't agree with in my operating system. i'll try again this afternoon... but i'm not too hopeful

Some virus destroy the antivirus installation.
Can you try full computer on-line scanning?
Kaspersky (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner) (very good detection rates)
ESET NOD32 (http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/)
Trendmicro housecall (http://www.trendmicro.com/hc_intro/default.asp)
F-Secure (http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml)
BitDefender (http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html) (free removal of the malware)
