my avast antivirus does not make updates. Im a new user.A red signe informe me that. I turn off my firewall from windows vista, but still the red signe apperars. What to do?? ive a cabel connection to internet.

do you use a proxy-server to go to the internet?
do you use internet explorer? - does it work? (because avast uses the IE settings)

What did you set in the Avast settings under 'Update (Connection)'?

my internet is working correctlly. In settings now i use "my computer is permently conected to internet", but ive tried the other option too. ive reinstalled also the avast too, but the red signe appears again.

Is your system time and date correct?
Do you use any proxy application (like annonimizers)?

what happens if you click onto that signs? (do you mean the signs in the lower right corner of your window?)

isn't there a possibility of viewing 'details' of what was wrong with the updates?

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

If it does not update (yet), please, post the last 200-250 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

It would appear that you are using a proxy, port 8080, you need to set the update process so it uses it.

Have you indicated that you are using a proxy in the Program Settings, Update (Connections) section, click the Proxy... Button and enter your proxy details.

Open it in Notepad. Go to the bottom, highlight toward top the enough lines, copy and paste here.

for me this seems as if avast! tries to connect to the internet via a proxy, but if you say you don't use a proxy you should look into the avast settings:
rightclick on the avst icon -> settings-> choose "update (connection)" -> click on "proxy" and choose 'Direct Connection'.

if you did that try to do an update - do you still get the same error message?

Well the 8080 (that I quoted in my last post) at the end of the IP address says differently avast normally tries to connect using port 80, so something is changing that. The first 4 parts of the IP 74.54.25.18 (avast's download 937 server) is the actual address and the last part is the port used '8080,' which is a common proxy port.

So there is something on your system that is redirecting traffic to port 8080. Are you using a web accelerator, etc. ?

What other security software do you have ?

Can you open your HOSTS file into Notepad, copy and paste the contents here?

C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\Hosts

It's a file without extension.
