Title: Avast 4.8 and Genie Backup - INI Modification
Post by: BirderBob on April 06, 2008, 05:08:53 PM
I'm getting the "INI Modification" warning every night when my backup runs.  The indicated program is Genie Backup Manager v8 home edition.  This is quite disruptive as the message stops the rather lengthy backup run and it has to be completed during working hours.

We have seen some similar issues with other backup applications (try a forum search for INI Modification) and it seems to have something to do with changing the attributes and some other properties. As far as I'm aware it is being investigated, are you able to exclude certain files, fi so it might be worth excluding it as a temporary work around.

David,

there is no way of excluding a program from the effects of the self-defence function.

BirderBob

The avast team will need to know the name of the executable module of Genie Backup Manager v8 home edition (so can you post it please?  The avast team will then take care of it in an upcoming VPS update.

If this presents you with a major problem then you can disable the avast self-defense feature for now via avast Program Settings > Troubleshooting

As far I know, they update this through virus database updates.
So, can you post the full name/path of the file that appears at the bottom of the avast4.ini popup message?

This happens for me with Windows' built-in backup program.

    %SystemRoot%\system32\ntbackup.exe

Thanks!  -JW

I may be wrong but I thought this one had been taken care of by the avast team already.

Can you confirm the version of avast and the version VPS file you are using please?

This case was reported previously and analized by Alwil team. But I'm not sure that this case is resolved by VPS update. Probably we need to wait program update for resolution.

psw,

the avast team has explained that this exceptions list is managed in the VPS file and not by programs updates.

I can understand exception list for applications modifying .ini data but would be implemented exception list for attributes modification? I think that some program redesign should be expected.

For me, the latest info is in http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=34356.msg287897#msg287897
So I doubt that attributes only exception list will be supported.

Ah, thanks, missed that one.

Probably easier for users experiencing any significant problems running their normal activities because of this to temporarily disable the avast self-defense function via avast Programs settings > Troubleshooting while awaiting relief from the avast team.
