Title: New Avast Program Update Breaks Easy Media CD Creator 7
Post by: kevinlkingma on April 06, 2008, 08:18:21 PM
I have discovered a problem with the latest program update (not virus definition update) with Avast.  After installing the update (the green box popped up and told me an update was available), I noticed that my entire machine froze when I attempted to burn audio CD's using Roxio's Easy Media Creator 7.1.

When I would drag MP3 files to the project, the entire machine would freeze.  It would take 30-40 seconds to recover from it, and only when I shut down Easy CD Creator 7 was I able to "take control" of my PC again.

Fortunately, I had created a Ghost image and I restored my machine to the image I had created back in January.  Everything, including Easy Media Creator 7, worked fine.  This rolled Avast back to Build Dec. 2007 (4.7.1098).

So I tried it again, updating the anti-virus program again, and, sure enough, my machine froze on me each time I attempted to create an audio CD using Roxio's product.  It even took nearly a minute to press <CTRL>-<ALT>-<DEL> to get task manager to show up.  Clicking on the START button in Windows took 15-30 seconds to respond.

I once again restored the Ghost image from January (whcih again rolled Avast back to Build Dec. 2007, version  4.7.1098), and this time I ignored the message to update the program, Everything seems to be working fine as before.

I am afraid at this point to update the program now, as it will render my burning software useless and hang my PC.  Please let me know what action I can take to ensure this won't happen in the event that I do update the program to the latest build.

When you've rolled back the system, any file that could help troubleshooting had gone with it...
Right now, if you can test, exclude the Roxio's Easy Media Creator from avast scannings (on-access of the Standard Shield provider) and try to disable the self-protection module of avast in the Troubleshooting tab of settings to see if it makes any difference.

I've been having similar problems burning video DVD's with DVD Flick on a computer I built for a friend. The comp freezes up just before the final burn. I shall see if disabling Avast! cures it. I shall post results here tomorrow.

Update: I disabled Avast!, but still am having problems burning video DVDs. It does not appear to be Avast! I shall do more testing.

Further update: I believe I can rule out Avast! as being the culprit here. Would you believe a flaky monitor is locking up the system?

I've also had problems burning DVD's but never thought it was related to avast!  ??? ???
I'm using Ashampoo Burning Studio 7 and various other programs. None of which seem to be
able to burn a DVD.

You mean you started to have the problem only recently (after updating to avast 4.8)?
Does disabling the self-defense module have any effect?

Thanks
Vlk

I'm having problems burning CDs too. Avast 4.8 has completely frozen my own computer (blue screen) .

Decided to download latest uninstall and  Avast 4.8 onto the front page of my husband's machine so I can burn a disc to reload them into my computer. When I try to burn the disc I get a message saying that the drive is  "not accessible - Incorrect function" .

It was working before his machine got this latest Avast  update.

Haven't had time to do tests.

Just burning a CD now whilst posting this:

I tried the Drag and drop into the optical drive folder and the windows XP CD burner was ready to burn, but kept asking for a writeable CD.

Using Nero Express 6 and the same CD in the drive, it has just completed successfully and the CD verified, contents as written.

So I rather think that is an issue with the XP burner (for me) not being able to detect a writeable CD in the drive rather than avast 4.8.

Version 4.7 works fine.  I have not tried updating to 4.8 again since I had nothing but system freezes when I did so.  In fact, I had to unplug the computer and pull the battery in order to recover in some instances.

Rolling back to 4.7 made all these problems go away.  Is Avast's tech support department aware of all these problems with 4.8?

Vlk,
The problem is definitly related to the self protection module.
See attached pictures:
I tried it with both a CD and a DVD with the same results.

Hope this helps.

I have sympathy for other users of avast 4.8 for the problems being experienced when burning CDs and DVDs.

Clearly a need to investigate further here.  I have experienced no problems burning media either during the beta period or with the released avast 4.8 with the Roxio Media Creator that came pre-installed on my Dell system (WinXP Pro SP2).

Also no problem burning media on another (rather old and underpowered) system WinXP Pro SP3 and Nero Express 5.5 along with avast 4.8.

Hello,

we have done many tests with Ashampoo B.Studio 7 and everything have worked fine.
When anybody will have some suggestion for tests we would be pleased  :)

ToM,
Sorry I missed your post. If you check the pictures I posted you'll notice that once
I disabled the self protection module, The problem disappeared.
If this module is left on, I get the error message as indicated by the pictures I posted.

As it stands now, the only way to burn a CD or DVD is to disable the self protection module
which isn't an acceptable solution.

Let me know if you have any other suggestions. Thanks  :)

Can you try if the latest beta version solves this?
Download the updater (http://files.avast.com/files/beta/aswbeta.exe) and run it or go here (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=34612.msg290254#msg290254) for more information.

Bob, there is a new beta build, 4.8.1178, in Tech's link, although the list doesn't mention CD/DVD burning, Vlk said it isn't a complete list. It might be worth trying, if it doesn't work, you can always disable the self-defence module again.

A picture is worth 1000 words. Thank You  :)

I tried it for both CD's and DVD's with the same result.

Any one want the discs I burned ???  ;D

Well at least you won't need to buy coasters for a while.

I'll post a bit more in the other place.

Bob, just to avoid any confusion, are you saying that build 1178 solved the problem for you, even with self-defense ENABLED?

Thanks
Vlk

Vlk,

I believe that bob3160 has explicitly stated that in the other place.

Agreed, but other people (having the same problem) may be reading this thread as well. ;)

It would be beneficial to get confirmation in this place from the users of other products to ensure that a general solution has been provided for the vast majority of users.

Wow... avast is blocking a DVD recognition? ???
Some other users had problems with the printer also... What's up?

Not stopping mine, I don't see how it can be working fine after the beta update and not some time later though. I would have though it would be consistent, not working at all.

The problem was on my end.   The iso file I tried to burn was to large for the DVD used.
Sorry.

Interesting, not a very helpful error message in not recognising the DVD rather than a this iso file it too big for the media.
