Title: Is there any "serious"-Skin for avast! 4 available?
Post by: Timo Schmidt on March 22, 2004, 06:17:46 PM
*Due to some harsh reactions I changed the text of my question - hope this time it's more polite - so - here the short and easy version :)*

I tried to avoid "professional" :D

The current standard-skin with its form and colors isn't really my taste!

My question is if there is a XP-Style-Skin available for download

Greetings

Timo

Such a good product like avast! doesn't deserve this.

Tino, it's a matter of opinion... But, please, think it won't be better not to blame into such a good family of skins done by Martin Novak and Sasha...

They work hard, for free, collect our suggestions and opinions...
Probably, they don't deserve your blame  :(

Let him go Technical... I just helped him with few tips when he had a problem... I like those guys, just like him...

They are frustrated with other people's hard work... probably they didn't do much in their own life...

And btw, Timo... who you think you are to judge ? Mr. Judge maybe ???  ;D

Cheers !

@S.Z. Crafttec:

Judge Dredd perhaps? ;)

@all

OK - i didn't want to piss off someone neither I wanted to make your hard work bad.

Everyone has an own taste regarding skins. Someone likes the avast! 4 Standard-Skin others (like me) want a smooth (optical) integration in the OS.

Why should I be frustrated with other peoples work - I'm happy that a company offers such a great product for free :) - and I'm happy that there are some tough guys who support it with skins - for free too (thx RejZor - Finally I realized that there are some skins to download :D ;) ).

So guys cool down - like I said I didn't want to offend someone who does all the work for us free :)

Sorry

Timo :D  (@Technical :D)

p.s. Just downloaded the Lite-On Skin - nice work...

No hard feelings at all, but I feel so sad when somebody says that skull in Pirate skin looks childish. I put 180% of myself into all those skins made by me... I work hard on few other jobs as well... All those graphics that you can see inside my skins are 100% mine... I draw them, I don't copy other people's artwork... so, childish is not quite proper word...

EDIT: By the way, "avast" is PIRATE word, so they asked me to make Pirate skin... which I did...

Cheers !

My question is if there is a XP-Style-Skin available for download which looks like more "serious" or "professional" (damn - I finally i

I my opinon the standard XP look looks like a day-care-center style too (waste of scrren space and CPU time). Only thing to do is to stop the "Themes" service, and get the 98/NT/2000 look back :-)

BTW:  Can't someone make a "Classic Windows" skin. One that look like regular Windows programs? Please please?

(actually I think such a skin should be the standard skin for all programs - people can choose others if they want to)

I really don't know if you guys are kidding me or what... just go to avast! skins download section and check all those skins in there... Don't tell me you are too lazy to do that...  ;D

* Lars-Erik -

Why don't you take a look at avast! skins download section ? There is Flat'n'Simple skin made by me... It's 100% Windows 95/98 look like...

EDIT: Do you guys really think that I can please you all in the same time ? It's NOT possible... simply, it's not possible... So many of you are complaining that other antivirus programs are good, but their GUIs are awful, ugly, too simple looking, whatever... now, no one is happy when you can choose between all those skins in download section...
Vlk told me once that we are going to spoil you with all those skins, and he was right... 100% right ! Vlk, my apologies to you my friend !!! I used to believe that these guys are nothing like that...

I think... no, I'm 100% sure, I'm not gonna make any more skins... that's enough. I tried to help people to be able to choose between all those "serious" or "gamey" look like skins, but it seems like no effect... only side effects.

I'm done...

Thank you all !!! I still love you, but my skin career is over... just take a look in here and everything will be much brighter for you: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=3475 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=3475)

Hey Sasha,

I appreciated all of your hard work. My problem is that there are too many good ones to choose from, although my favorites in order are - Lite-On, Flat'n'Simple, Corporate, O-Sti-X, and G5 from your creations and Glass Plate and Blue Panel 4.0. ;D

I understand all of your hard work. I have not tried designing skins for Avast, but I do skins for True Launch Bar. And these are not 1/10th as hard to do as yours. There are always going to be complaints no matter what. It goes with the turf. ::)

I hope that you'll continue to stay at the forum, even if you do not make any more skins.   ;)

Hi again Sasha!  ;D

I appreciated all the hard effort, and time you put into making these skins. I don't find ANY of them childish.

I sure hope that some of the comments made here by certain people doesn't damage your integrity as an artist.  :'(

Just accept that there are people out there who will ALWAYS want more for nothin'.

You're a fantastic artist!  ;D
Just do what you love to do and don't let such comments wind you up.

Take care mate,

PS: LITE-ON IS MY NEW PERSONAL FAVORITE!!!  8) 8)

The current standard-skin with its form and colors (look at that skull - lol) looks childish in my opinion! Such a good product like avast! doesn't deserve this.

Timo

The pirate skin is my favorite one. This is definately a case of, to each his own!

By the way, if you are truely not trying to piss anyone off, next time re-think your choice of words. You could have easily asked about skins without bashing the ones you don't like! Not very "proffessional" Woops! I used the word!  ;D

Sasha,
Let me join with the others in saying that you have done great work. You are a talented man...

Now, you must be develop another skin--a "tough" skin for yourself that protects your heart against the thoughtless and crude comments of others. No artist is going to please everyone...it is  part of the creative life.
If there are 100 people and two of them don't like your work...don't let those two mean more to you than the other 98 who love your style and designs.

peace, my friend

How much someone likes one skin depends on personal taste and cannot be judged as those skins sucks or something like that.
Sasha (and Martin) was working hard on all those skins (i tried it by myself too and i can tell its not easy to make a skin for avast!) so there is at least one skin that you'll like. I don't know whats wrong whit Flat'n'simple and default Blue skin? F'n'S is very "classic" designed and looks very professional. Default blue is in my opinion very simple and nice,or Lite-On which mimic other "professional" antivirus programs. Just try to change the skin on Norton or on any other AV :P

If you don't like any of it,than buy a Pro version of avast! which has both, skinned interface (Simple) and classic professional interface (Enhanced).

Please please don't over-react. I did not say your skins was bad. I only said that maybe someone sjould make a "standard" skin.

Even though Flat'n'simple and the newest one (am at wokr now, don't remember the name) are quite plain, they still are not "no skin" (if you get my idea). I think all programs should have an option to turn skins off - if someone want the standard plain Win98 look (might be lots of reasons, lack of CPU and graphics power...)

BTW:  None of the skin really are plain Windows. Not if I compare them to a standard program (Notepad, Write etc) next to them.

Would the application be faster and smaller if they used the standard Windows graphics look (the one you choose in Display properties). Most serious program (Office, Outlook) do. Even other system (Agent mail, Browsers, buisiness system, OCR systems) do.

All I want is a "no skin" option - using the standard Windows look

I think (though I'm not 100% sure) that this option will be implemented. It will take some time, however - because the skins cannot be simply turned off by commenting a few lines of the code. Adding this option will require quite a lot of effort and big changes to the code.

OK, do you want skin or you don't want skin... make up your mind. First you asked this (these are your words, not mine):
BTW:  Can't someone make a "Classic Windows" skin. One that look like regular Windows programs? Please please?

(actually I think such a skin should be the standard skin for all programs - people can choose others if they want to)

Can someone make classic Windows skin ? I made it and you said it's not quite plain... OK. Then, what you need is not skin... you don't really need anyone to make a skin for your taste. You need skinless program. avast! is fully skinable program, you can't have it without skins unless you buy Pro version...

You must understand... that if I have to work on skins, I'll make SKINS... I'm not here to make "invinsible" or unexisting skin for avast! That's programmer's issue...

Cheers !

I'll try to make you happy with some new skins in the future... but, those skins will be professional styled only... not movie-style skins any more... I'm so tired of all those "CHILDISH" skins...  ;D

Anyone that takes time out for others is an awesome person. We all do here, help others who may need guidance or a helping hand. We must thank all who help and develope such awesome things. I know the hard work that goes into such things, and I cant always make everyone happy, but in my heart of hearts I know most are. The lesson here is just this, we cant make everyone happy all the time, but take in heart the ones who are and dont let the few ruin your hearts desire for any future desires you may have. Thru avast av, the skins and all the support here, we have an awesome family, dedicated to put a smile on each face. This is the goal, and that can never be taken away from us.

God bless,

That's the best thing about this forum... it's every time like this time... someone just arrived into this forum, everyone wish him welcome and all kind of nice things, and all of a sudden, he jumps all over somebody without any possible reason. What is the best of all ? We are one big familly in here, we don't even know how any other member of this forum even looks like... maybe, we pass each other on the streets every day, but we don't know that... no matter what are our personal differences or skin colour or religion, we all are members of the same tribe... AVAST! ADDICTS

You guys (my friends) are unbelievable. Every single time, someone jumps with conclusions regarding my work or something else, I can count on you, because I know that you are here for me and for everybody else who likes to help others and most of all, likes peace...

I thought making a "100% Classic Windows" looking skin could be another way to solve this. I did not say that YOU should make it if you don't want to. I just asked if someone could make it (if I had know how - I would have tried making one myself :-)

Don't worry Lars... I know that you meant nothing wrong... Maybe, I can make one Windows 95/98 skin, but totaly plain, without fancy animations or stuff like that. I still have to use animations for those 3 sliding panels, but I have idea how to make it unnoticeable and plain looking like... but it will still use some system resources, because it's not going to be "naked" avast!, it will still use a skin...

I just need to catche some spare time my friend... we'll see.

OK - lets assume this is a German Forum and You as an English-speaking guy with some German-Knowledge try to explain something.

First question: What do I want, why do I write in this forum...  OK
Second question: How do I explain (with my given "Word-Chest") this so that the people understand what I want... OK
Third question: Find the correct words so that noone gets pissed (sorry for this harsh word) off and change Step 2 according Step 3... *hmmm - thinking*

According to your reactions I know that the third question wasn't really done well by me  :'(. And therefore I would appologize myself.

I know you (the "skinners") and the company are doing great work here, not only because the skins (for example those in the download-section) meet almost everyone's taste - they are for free!

As result of the (understandable) reactions of my posting I will change the first one or delete it completely...

Regards

Timo

My intention was to describe how to write down a polite (polite = opposite of "harsh") question (for example "are there other skins than the standard-skin available") if you don't speak the forum-language ;). And this is done by asking and answering yourself 3 questions :D
