Title: Avast update blocked by Mcafee
Post by: RebaDeba on April 12, 2008, 01:13:06 AM
Hey all..

I have been using Avast AND Mcafee together for about a year with zero interaction problems..

This past week, Avast asked me to update to newer version so I did..

On reboot, I got a warning from Avast that a program was trying to change an INI file. That program is Mcafee.
I've clicked yes, and I've clicked no.. either way, I keep getting the warning popping up. When it does, it 'grays out' the background and wont let me do anything until I answer.

Also, on reboot.. I'm getting numerous errors. I either get just the wallpaper and zero icons, no start button and no task bar.. or I get them but nothing will open. (including control panel)
Sometimes, I get the icons and no task bar.

It takes about 5 reboots (manually) to get things running, and then I get hit with the INI messages again.

I tried to restore to an earlier day. That worked the first time but 2 days later, somehow it updated itself while I slept and I was back in the same boat. I've 'restored' again, but each time I reboot, Avast automatically updates itself.

Is there anyway to keep the older version?? Or make Mcafee leave it alone?

I want to keep both running as I have for a year. What one doesnt catch, the other does.

As for right now, I've uninstalled Avast.

Sooner or later, conflicts.
Disable is not enough.
avast and McAfee aren't compatible each other.
Choose the one you trust to protect your computer.
If you want to remove McAfee, this article provides the steps to remove SecurityCenter from your computer. http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq3.asp?docid=71525
Also for direct download: http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/VSCleanupTool.exe
and http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe (2007)

If you need, you can find many free versions of these registry cleaners here:
http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/system/fwregtools.html

Sometimes, McAfee won't be completely removed if, before, you do not uninstall Avast, including the use of its "Uninstall Application" if necessary (www.avast.com/eng/faq-install-uninstall-avast.html).

I'm sad though.
Why? Do you think you're better protected? I don't think so... two antivirus will slowdown and fight for the computer control. It's not a good idea of protection at all.

I'm sad because I don't like change.. and I don't want to have to chose here..

I go to some pretty risque websites sometimes, and I really really (life and death) need to have the 100% best protection out there.

I've never had any issues with running both.
My Mcafee is a professional business addition that was given to me. It never needs updating as it does it itself.
I run 5 of the 7 processes for avast excluding the email ones (as it wouldn't even let me give or get mail)

One day Mcafee would catch something, and the next avast would.

Mcafee runs a scan every night, and avast was a good back up to that but had to be manually done (and needs constant supervision as it wont move a file unless I direct it)

*sigh*...

choices choices..

thanks again

Does it really worth it that much to purchase Virtual Center? Would it be worth it to purchase Virtual center
If I don't upgrade my VI3 from standard to Enterprise. The post above cheered me up a lot into buying it, but it did not
mention what it will give & not give in standard edition.
