Title: Web Browsers Blocked with avast! 4.8
Post by: dypsis on April 17, 2008, 02:40:48 AM
Since upgrading to avast! 4.8, I have been having intermittent browsing problems on my Vista 64 computer.

When this problem occurs, both Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox cannot access the internet until I disable "Web Shield" and "Script Blocking". If I only disable "Web Shield", then Firefox can access the internet, but not Internet Explorer. So to get both browsers working, I need to disable both "Web Shield" and "Script Blocking".

I never had this problem with 4.7. This only started happening since upgrading to 4.8.

I am not running any third party firewall or any anti-spyware. I only have Windows Firewall enabled. But I even tried disabling Windows Firewall, but it did not fix the problem.

Is there a fix coming for this or do you have any better workarounds than what I have already done?

Any suggestions?

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and use it for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the latest avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html) version. Boot.
6. Then, update to the latest beta: download the updater (http://files.avast.com/files/beta/aswbeta.exe) and run it or go here (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=34612.msg290254#msg290254) for more information.
7. Boot.
8. Check and post the results.

Thanks for the valuable info Tech.

I done as you said, but deviated to the page you linked to and installed v4.8.1178 Pre-release instead of installing the release version and running avast! Update.

So far, so good. I will report back if I have any further problems. This problem was intermittent, but increased in regularity recently.

Left click the 'a' blue icon.
Click 'details' button to expand.
Choose the providers at left and stop them in the proper button. You must answer 'yes' to persist the changes. I'll suggest you let the Standard Shield at 'High' sensitivity level in this environment.

Glad that the beta installation (apparently) solves your problem.
Welcome to avast forums.
Thanks. I tested it this morning with 2 reboots, and it is still OK. So it seems that it is fixed.

I love this AV, but I don't like the splash screens with the individual modules, so I turn them off. I also turn the memory scan off as it takes too long to open.

May I suggest an Import/Export Settings Wizard in future releases to hasten new installations.

I booted the computer up this afternoon, and the problem is back.  :'(

I have had to disable "Web Shield" and "Script Blocking" again.  :(

Also. Where do you find Unattended Installation to import/export settings?

What is "the problem" ... what exactly happens when you try to connect to a website from a browser?
Title: Re: Web Browsers Blocked with avast! 4.8
Post by: alanrf on April 18, 2008, 09:33:41 AM
Are you using any software with your browser ... for example an advertising blocker or a web "accelerator" or any VPN software?
Title: Re: Web Browsers Blocked with avast! 4.8
Post by: dypsis on April 18, 2008, 09:42:54 AM
No. No blockers, no third party firewalls, no anti-spyware. Just a very clean installation of Vista 64.

If I try an open a browser, my homepage (Google) just times out in both IE7 and Firefox. IE7 will hang if I try and close it while it is still trying to connect.

As soon as I disable "Web Shield" and "Script Blocking", everything is fine again.

As already stated, I ran v4.7 with no problems at all.

Please understand I am not saying that your actions have caused this and I am not suggesting that all was not well with avast 4.7.

I am just searching for clues as to what has happened now that you have installed 4.8.

I may ask you to try a small variation on lukor's suggestion ...but first ...

Are you willing to try a test please?

Please terminate the Internet Mail provider and tell avast you want to persist this change (make it permanent).

Please start the Webshield and tell avast you want to persist the change (make it permanent).

Then please restart your system.

Does that make any difference in your browsing?
Title: Re: Web Browsers Blocked with avast! 4.8
Post by: dypsis on April 18, 2008, 10:14:00 AM
I can try. But be aware that occasionally it works, then plays up later.

Shall I enable both Script Blocking and Web Shield?
Title: Re: Web Browsers Blocked with avast! 4.8
Post by: alanrf on April 18, 2008, 10:15:25 AM
Please just Webshield ... knowing that it is intermittent is why I am asking you to make this test.
Title: Re: Web Browsers Blocked with avast! 4.8
Post by: dypsis on April 18, 2008, 10:24:09 AM
I have done that. I have Internet Mail and Script Blocking disabled, and I currently have browsing working.
Title: Re: Web Browsers Blocked with avast! 4.8
Post by: alanrf on April 18, 2008, 10:28:10 AM
That confirms what I thought would happen.

However this situation is not one I want to suggest you run in.

I hope you are willing to work with us further to identify exactly what is happening but first I would like to try to set up a work around so that you can have all your providers (I'm not sure about Script Blocking - which does not work with Firefox anyway) running.

Are you willing to try one more test please?
Title: Re: Web Browsers Blocked with avast! 4.8
Post by: dypsis on April 18, 2008, 10:32:24 AM
That explains why Firefox doesn't need Script Blocking disabled.

Yes, I am willing to try a test.
Title: Re: Web Browsers Blocked with avast! 4.8

You said earlier that you had tried setting up a proxy using localhost/127.0.0.1 and port 12080 and I got the impression it did not help.

Would you please try that (let's just work with one browser first) again and add one more important step?

In the Webshield please click on "Customize" and change, in the "Basic" tab, the redirected port to 88 (it does not matter too much what it is just as long as it is not 80).

When you have made the changes to the browser for the proxy and to the Webshield please terminate the Webshield and start it again.  Then browse a little with your proxied browser and see if the "last scanned" and counts in the Webshield are changing.

Please let me know how it goes.

The web shield scan count is changing and so is last scanned.
Title: Re: Web Browsers Blocked with avast! 4.8

So can you now try the change to the proxy for Firefox please?
Title: Re: Web Browsers Blocked with avast! 4.8

So the situation now is that I have all the Providers enabled except Script Blocking.
Title: Re: Web Browsers Blocked with avast! 4.8
Post by: alanrf on April 18, 2008, 10:58:05 AM
The important acid test is what happens when you have those providers enabled and restart the system ... can you still browse?
Title: Re: Web Browsers Blocked with avast! 4.8
Post by: dypsis on April 18, 2008, 10:59:18 AM
OK. Firefox is done now.

I can still browse.

Does this mean that i have to use a proxy for my browsers now to run avast!?
Title: Re: Web Browsers Blocked with avast! 4.8
Post by: alanrf on April 18, 2008, 11:10:45 AM
Well ... remember what I said ...

I wanted to get you a workaround that would let you have all your providers running.  Please give me a little while to check out Script Blocking (I use the Home edition and we humbler souls do not have Script Blocking) I think lukor understands what we have been doing here and he may chime back in on that.

So, this is just a workaround to get you out of the "sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't" situation and keep you going for now.  I need to do a little research but I will be back and ask you to run a diagnostic function that I hope you will feel able to do and post the results back here.

From this testing I believe that you do, in fact, have some software running on your system that played well with the intercepting of browsing with avast 4.7.  However, with avast 4.8 due to some timing changes sometimes it does and sometimes it does not.  We need to find out what that is and try to find a permanent solution that will remove the need for the proxy.

But ... it is now past 2am here in California and I need to get some sleep.  I hope that you are now in a configuration that will keep you going until I can get back to this later today.

OK Mate.

Thanks for all the help.

I love this AV, so I am keen to get it working properly and am happy to do any testing needed.

I have just rebooted with all Providers enabled and both IE and Firefox working.

I only hope that situation stays like it.

Just one more request right now.

Could you please view the following file:

Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini

and tell us all the entries you have in the section headed:

[WebScanner]
Title: Re: Web Browsers Blocked with avast! 4.8

There you go:

[WebScanner]
AutoRedirect=1
HttpRedirectPort=88
LoadIsapiFilters=1
ISAPIFilter1=ashWsFtr.dll
IgnoreAddress=
IgnoreLocalhost=1

Hey, was I supposed to enable Internet Mail? Somewhere along the line it got enabled.

I hope it will and I am pretty sure it will.

I think that some others may not fully understand what we have been doing so ...  I would suggest you do not make any changes to this for now unless the person requesting it is identified as member of the Alwil software/avast team.  Of course, it is your system and your choice.

Yes, you can run with Internet Mail now - I only asked you to stop it to help prove my theory on what was happening in your system.  The workaround makes it unnecessary to keep it turned off.

Dypsis,

so now, you have WebShield enabled, Script blocked disabled, redirected port disabled (by changing it to 88), proxy server configured to 127.0.0.1:12080 in IE and you can browse the web normally? Am I right ?

And you are saying, that changing the redirected port back to 80 with proxy server still configured brings the troubles back?

Thats very strange to me, since with the proxy server configured, IE should not connect to port 80 at all, so the redirected port value should not make a difference.

lukor have you seen Alan's Topic about the web shield in the Evangelists area ?

Title: Re: Web Browsers Blocked with avast! 4.8
Post by: lukor on April 18, 2008, 06:54:11 PM
David, I have seen Alan's thread. Very interresting, however that would probably match if the WebShield wouldn't be scanning anything. I can hardly see how exactly would that apply to this specific situation - where WebShield enabled via redirect or even Script blocker causes no-connection at all.

Dypsis, could you please test again with redirect enabled, (redirect port=80), proxy server empty and without the scanning component loaded - unchecked the "Enable Web Scanning" checkbox ?

Hey y'all, I've been having a very similar problem in this thread here,

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=30860.0;topicseen

I'm not quite as technologically advanced as some of y'all,
probably know just enough to really screw things up
but if any of y'all would take the time to read the other thread
and come up with any ideas I'd really appreciate the help.

Until then I'll be monitering both threads to see what to try next. (within my abilities)

Hi Dypsis,

can you please try to import the following registry file?

http://public.avast.com/~rypacek/aswrdr-automatic.reg

Does that make any difference?

(please note, you'll have to disable avast! self protection - in the troubleshooting page of settings dialog - to be able to do that)

Thanks a lot.

BTW to connect to your system, it may be necessary to tweak your router settings, and/or use a different method than stadard Remote Desktop (e.g. the remote access system provided by logmein.com).

Is that a problem?
Have you tried that before?

Thanks

No problems here with 4.7, it started with 4.8, which also has been giving me problems sending emails through SMTP servers on port 25. Both the final 4.8 and the newest 4.8 beta is giving me problems.

Running Vista SP1, but had the problem before SP1 also. I had the problems with my browser stopped working three times now and I noticed two of the times (didn't check the first time and can't remember precisely when it happened), that Avast did a VPS update just before my browsers stopped working.

Hi dypsis,

however strange it may sound, this is actually good news.

I mean, the worst thing in software engineering  is "ghost bugs". I.e. bugs that only exhibit once, and then they disappear. As there were no changes in build 1185 designed to solve the problem you're describing, it would be actually quite strange if installing this version resolved the issue for you.

Let's do the remote desktop thing tomorrow evening (your time), hopefully, we'll find out what's going on.

Thanks
Vlk

It was just me suggesting that as a temporary workaround until the avast team got round to the issue.  I tried to be clear at the time that this was purely a personal suggestion by me and that I did not represent the avast team.  Now that the avast professionals will be taking a look at your system to diagnose the problem I have no doubt that they will:

1) determine the root cause
2) come up with a solution to return you to the functioning of the Webshield that requires no proxy setting by you.

Good luck with the remote diagnosis session.

If so, please follow these steps:

1. go to www.logmein.com and click the green button "Sign up for Free trial"
2. fill in the registration form and click Go (you can uncheck the "Keep me informed..." boxes to prevent future spam coming from them)
3. when the Warning - Security dialog pops up, click  "Run".
4. follow the wizard to install the program; when asked for account details, provide the email-address/password used in step 2.

Then send me an email with
1. the email address and password you used in steps 2 and 4
2. the Windows username/password that we can use to connect to your machine

My email address is in my forum profile.

Thanks
Vlk

Hi dypsis,

please try updating to the latest pre-release build (4.8.1187) and see if it makes any difference
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=34612.msg295052#msg295052

If it doesn't, I'd like to connect to your system once more as in this new release, we have implemented some changes that should allow us better analyse the problem.

Thanks
Vlk

Hi Vlk.

I think the problem is fixed.
I have tried restarts with both Script Blocking and Web Shield enabled with no problem. Both IE7 and Firefox connect real quick.

I will keep you informed of any change, but I am feeling confident.

Thanks for your excellent service.  :)

Glad to hear that.
Please try playing with the reboot a bit more to make sure the problem is really gone - this is the critical moment (boot).

Thanks, and take care
Vlk

PS. you may uninstall LogMeIn now (if you want)... in fact it would be a good idea unless you plan to use it yourself. :)

I believe the avast team are a very impressive bunch so I have faith that they will come up with something when we have pinpointed all the details.

I hope that this stays fixed for you and ... as just another member of the avast community ... let me salute you for the effort you made to help the avast team and all the rest of us.

I got about three and a half hours sleep last night. But it appears that it was worth it.  ;)

And yes, they are an impressive bunch. And great to deal with.  :)

I'm running Vista 32 and I'm having the same problem. When I try to connect, the web page comes up blank. The only way I can connect properly is to shut Avast down. Ive done everything that was suggested in the thread, but its still not working. Any ideas?

We will need more information to be able to help you:
- What avast! version are you using?
- Do you use a firewall? Which one?
- Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system?  Did you have in the past?
- Any other security programs that could interfere?
- Any proxy application (like annonimizers) installed?

You have two anti virus programs installed. They are probably conflicting and causing your problem.

Or you're using both McAfee and Windows firewall and they're conflicting with WebShield.

I'm using ZoneAlarm firewall with Vista Home Premium. Whenever browsers freeze, I terminate Web Shield (Avast 4.8.1169) and restart browsers for them to work properly again. I then start web shield again. Anyway, it sure beats having to reboot computer each time. Anyway, are you saying that upgrading to the latest Avast beta version will eliminate this problem?

It could... but other users failed to solve this problem with the beta version... so, I'm not sure.

Apparently updating to the latest beta version won't resolve the issue. It appears that my problem is more related to topic:

ZoneAlarm Free seems to be incompatible with Webshield component of Avast Anti-virus.

I'm having pretty much the same problem with avast 4.8 on 2 computers.
After system startup i can access internet websites and/or start downloads.
After some time all downloads will stop (not abort, just stop downloading) and any website called will load forever without any result or error message shown.
Note that i can still access FTP sites without problem.
Also other internet services are still working properly (teamspeak or multiplayer online games).
It seems that only port (or protocol) for internet is blocked.
No matter which browser is used (i tested with IE, Firefox 2 and Firefox 3 Beta)
If the described situation occurs, there is no way to get it running again until you do a complete system reboot - you are not even able to kill system process for the browser from windows task manager.
The same problem also occurs with p2p software (eMule) although there is not used port 80.

If i disable avast (or at least the web shield and p2p shield) the problem seems not to occure (tested only 2 days).

my system is following:
OS: Vista (32bit) with SP1 installed
avast (home edition) v4.8.1201 - VPS: 080606-1, no other anti virus software installed
Firewall: ZoneAlarm (free version) v7.1.254, windows firewall is turned off, windows defender activated
Browsers tested with: Firefox 3.0 RC1, Firefox 2, IE v7.0.6001

i also use a dsl router with integrated firewall, all worked well before avast was updated to 4.8

is there any solution for this problem available? (except disabling web shield and p2p shield)

feel free to ask for more system details if needed

In the pro version, it's the same place as webshield. In the home version, it doesn't exist.

Avast 4.8 Home
All browsers are blocked
I try IE 7, Opera9.50, FireFox2 and 3 - nothing

FF3:
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
IE7:
Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage
Opera9.50
just blank page without any messages

All other network services ( iRC, p2p, mail[Firebird]) work.
If i press on "Stop On-Access Protection" all start work fine.
I try to switch off separate providers, but no luck.

is there any solution yet?

Have you read the start of this topic as I'm sure the usual questions and suspects are mentioned, like your firewall (not mentioned) blocking ashwebsv.exe (did you terminate the Web Shield) ?

Both me and my girlfriend have the same problems with Avast 4.8.

We both run Vista 32, now on SP1, but her problems started before SP1.

We both use ZoneAlarm also.

Our browsers (usually Firefox 3.xx) work to begin with, then stop being able to access the internet after a random time.  There seems no pattern to this.

My girlfriend can sometimes use IE7 for a while after, but this then stops.  I also have problems when using only Opera.

The only way I have found to fix it is to close all browsers (although sometimes they refuse to close down completely, leaving the process running,) and turn Avast off and on again.  This seems to resolve the problem temporarily.

We both use ZoneAlarm also.
Remove the avast entries from ZA and boot, allowing next the following programs to connect:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable). This is a temporary file that just appears when an update (check) is about to launch, and disappears again afterwards.
