Title: 16 Providers?
Post by: soneil on May 20, 2008, 08:01:26 PM
My system tray "a" icon says that there are 16 provider(s) total, 5 running. When I to On-Access Control Protection, all of the providers are duplicated and the copies are greyed out and not running? I've checked other installations on a network I manage and they all have up to 8 providers.

So why are mine duplicated? Anyone know?  :)

Thanks.

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and use it for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the latest avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html) version.
6. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.

The technical term is, "your installation is screwed," you will have to do a clean re-install as Tech suggests.

All sorted now!  :)

I think maybe because it was initially installed in one Administrator account (on Windows Vista SP1) but then utilised in another Administrator account that possibly the provider set was duplicated based on who most likely owned the installation? Just maybe? Or maybe he just had to do with how it updated automatically over the previous installation? All of the providers had the same version number.

Anyway, thanks!

Incidentally, reinstalling also solved the problems I was having with Windows Security Centre whereby Avast was recognised in both Malware categories but it's status wasn't reported correctly. Just previous to uninstalling and reinstalling the application, I had tried the "delete the repository at \system32\wbem\repository" troubleshooting step without any success - the repository was just recreated with the same misinformation.

however, upon reinstalling later that day, it is now working correctly.

Hmmm... could be, specially if you did not boot after the first installation and make logon on the second administrator account...
Glad that you've sorted out.
