Hmmm... avast does not need a browser connection to update (neither IE nor Firefox).
I don't think it's possible. Are you using avast Home or Pro?

IE is a listed avast! installation requirement to view the 'Help' files only. It is not involved in updates.
avast! 'Home' is for non-commercial home use only. If there's a Network Administrator, it's not non-commercial, you need to use 'Pro' and consider Distributed Network Manager (http://www.avast.com/eng/adnm.html).

when i ask my office network admin to disable "browser check:" on firewall (IPCop) for a while, my avast! Home can perform update without any problem.

yes, i know avast! 'Home' is for non-commmercial home use only. i bring my laptop to office just because i want to online update for avast and some other program. and this laptop is for personal use only.

Makan, sorry, this question (why is this happening?) should be done to your 'network admin' as I can't imagine or guess a solution.

Makan,
If you start Internet Explorer so it is on line and showing your home page, I think you may find that you can update Avast. I believe the browser check is looking for IE being active.
