I would like to know how can I exit Avast! not only stop the protection. Completely exit the program resident.

There shouldn't be any need to do that.
If you really want to, then you can uninstall avast!, of course.

Why is it that you need to do this ?
Edit: missed a line.
If the reason is to reduce memory overhead avast doesn't use that much.

you can always use task manager and just blow most any program away
however an AV usually loads deep into your os
so you might not get as much resources back as you think you should
better to reboot and keep it from loading
then NO INTERNET ACCESS unless you are running VM or Sandbox or equivalents
The cure is worse than the disease
what exactly is your problem?
what os, firewall, other programs
how fast a system- how much memory etc

I have another post about multiple windows xp installations from image restoration.
When Avast! open I can't deleted certain entries in windows registry.
But you told me tha in safe mode the program is not activated. So I did .
Now all is correct and Avast! is running quite wonderful way .

Sometimes when I "Stop On-Access Protection", the icon stops responding. It sometimes happens on all my computers.
I hate having to reboot every time this happens.
I would like to be able to exit avast!, then restart it.
Any ideas?

Because as I said in my previous post, it stops responding (hangs, freezes).
My operating systems are Vista 32 and 64.

That is what I am asking. But which one? I haven't been able to get it to unload.

avast! is using self protection so killing in task manager isn't possible anymore.
If there are lockups i'd say it's most probbaly something wrong with your system itself.
I'm running avast! on Vista 32bit and 64bit, two different systems without any problems.
Are you using any other security software?
Also do you have latest chipset driver installed (memory controller and disk drive controller).
These are usually the cause of bad performance and lockups.

i use Avast too and there no any problem of ram or something !

But it only happens occasionally.
I am not running any other security software.
I have avast! running on 3 different systems (2 x Vista 32 + 1 x Vista 64). They all suffer from this problem now and then.

I am still getting this problem now and then when attempting to disable avast! from the tray icon.
It completely hangs, and I have to restart.
