Title: Since I downloaded Avast! Firefox can't access the web!
Post by: Iron_Bean on August 26, 2008, 03:59:53 PM
I recently downloaded Avast! It got rid of all my viruses, but now Mozilla FireFox won't work. Is there something I can do let FireFox access the web? I can access the web on all my other internet programmes but i perfer to use Mozzila FireFox. It says "The Connection was reset" when I try to open it.

I'm using Win XP and "ZoneAlarm and Norton Internet Security" are my current firewalls. (I got ZoneAlarm and Avast! becuse Norton is pretty bad.)

Thanks.

Can you connect with another browser like opera of IE ?

Well you can get too much of a good thing and three firewalls would qualify as tooooo much, like antivirus applications it is recommended you only have one resident firewall.

Norton in the mix complicates matters even further as a) it is a pig to get rid of b) it conflicts with other security software.

You want to completely remove NIS, and disable the XP firewall, leaving only one active resident firewall ZA (though it is better than no firewall the free version has many better rivals).

A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039)

Once you have totally removed NIS and disabled the windows firewall you should be able to connect.

If not, Does Zone Alarm allow ashWebSv.exe internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and reconnect to the internet, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

Two antivirus or two firewalls will conflict each other...
