Title: Freeware registry cleaner
Post by: randomkill on August 31, 2008, 12:48:18 PM
All the registry fixers I've download give you free scan but require purchasing the full versions to remove the errors.

Is there a free one with all features included for vista 64bit ?

Free and reliable:

- MV RegClean (http://www.velasco.com.br/mvregclean_en_informations.php)

- Eusing Registry Cleaner (http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm)

Coming back to topic.
You could try the free version of Wise Registry Cleaner (it's reliable).

Wise Registry Cleaner (http://www.wisecleaner.com/) has a good free version.

Last time I tried it it kept bugging me to buy the Pro version so much I un-installed it.

I use RegSeeker and Glary Utilities Free:

+1 for Ccleaner. Considered one of the safer, gentler cleaners, for whiter whites without bleaching colours.  ;D
TweakNow http://www.tweaknow.com/RegCleaner.html is another gentle tool.

Opinion varies as to what benefit is gained from reg cleaning. Unfortunately there are plenty of programs that, when uninstalled, leave orphans behind, and not just in the registry.
Also recommend http://www.revouninstaller.com/ (http://www.revouninstaller.com/) for this sort of thing. It will "deep search" for files/reg entries left over by a programs' own uninstaller.
Why the emphasis on "gentle"?
Also highly recommend backing up the registry before making changes. It's possible to bork your OS by overzealous reg cleaning. (Been there, done that!) Ccleaner has the option to backup changes made, a good feature. I've also found Erunt http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/ (http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/) very good for this. The "NTREGOPT" program on the same page defrags the registry, without removing entries. Never had a problem. Some folk use Erunt in lieu of system restore.

PS,
Sorry, randomkill, should have read your "Vista64" part of the post.
ERUNT is not specifically supported on Vista64, though it may work, due to it's basic architecture. I'd think probably not though.
Revo uninstaller says "64bit OS NOT supported."

I've tested MV RegClean & Comodo Registry Cleaner beta. I ran MVRegClean first, it found me 400 errors, I removed them but didn't notice any improvement in speed. I used then Comodo Registry Cleaner Beta, it found another 50 errors, I removed them, I compacted the registry and I feel much more improvement on speed. WOW, Thumbs up, Comodo ;)

An mistaken idea but very used is to think that to remove invalid items allow the users to "notice a improvement in speed".

If there is some it's contemptible.

Better for that is to compact the registry. A classic - and very good - compactor/optimizer is NTRegOpt.

And it isn't a good idea to search for registry cleaners that clean many items.

With the registry to clean too much is to have many troubles - like blue screens...

It's enough to use reliables and free registry cleaners like CCleaner, MV RegClean and Eusing Registry Cleaner.

I second that. Cleaning files (especially registry) will only make *slight* performance improvements if you know what to do afterwards. I use JKDefrag after file installing/ cleaning and Auslogics Registry Defrag ( http://www.auslogics.com/registry-defrag ). [I believe users only recommend cleaning files as good practice, saving as much precious space as possible. But nowadays, hard drive space is so grand that people don't really care now.]

Try Auslogics Registry Defrag after registry cleaning.

People must be sensitive about registry cleaning, I mean it's like brain surgery! I tested Comodo Registry Cleaner beta on 2 machines and on my Vista machine it messed up with errors on the disk, I couldn't boot in Safe Mode and my Firefox 3.0.1 was damaged. I'm not even sure if I'm not infected by malware as my pc started acting weird since this last registry clean up. I think that beta softwares for registry cleaning are a bit dangerous (but there are back-ups....). In my case, on one of my machine CCR was listed as uninstalled application even though it was on my HD.

The more aggressive, the more dangerous...
Beta... well, it's not safe for sure...

The one in CCleaner seems to be the most reliable. It doesn't clean as much but also doesn't trash the system as much either.

Just to say the damage (add on screen) on FF 3.0.1 was only on my user account. The administrator account is OK. I had to reinstall every extension on my user account. What a nightmare. What happened? The FireGesture extension's option in my administrator account is also damaged. It was updated 2 days ago. Tried a re-install but it wouldn't. Not so important, ThreatFire interference maybe :'(

ThreatFire interference maybe :'(
I bet on this one...
I don't think it's CCleaner related...

Call me "Crazy" after 2-3 hours and a reboot I finally installed FireGesture ext. in FF 3.0.1 normally. What is going on on my pc is a mystery, it looks a bit as virus infected yet AVAST detected nothing so far. To be continued...anyway ;D

I would have to support that suggestion, you really do have too much of a good thing on your system.

Threatfire and Comodo with defence plus could get tangled up. There have been several posts on the forum where threatfire has been involved in similar issues with extensions, I don't know if that is also related to comodo or just threatfire and some firefox extensions.

I bet on this...

Tech, David, may be you're right. I followed your instructions and removed Threatfire relying solely on Avast 4.8.1229 and Comodo3FW. I thought the "security" was hightened but it sort of slows and freezes the computer at times. Long process but worth it! Now, no longer PCTools on this pc, except for their FW they are all buggy to some extent. :(

Tonight I tried installing extensions in FF3.0.1 on Vista. Threatfire is out. It said installation failed, corrupted download or invalid file hash. All my 20 extensions were reinstalled in one shot  ??? and Nightly Tester Tool and AdBlock Plus Filter G set were said not compatible with FF 3.0.1.  On my 2 accounts (Admin & Limited User Account)  ???Could this be the action of some virus or malware to hijack the default browser? I ran Hijack This and everything is fine ???

Could be the Firekeeper extension???
I don't think so... I use Firekeeper and also ThreatFire  :-[
But I'm on Vista with 3Gb of RAM...
Sometimes Firefox extensions became weird... even starting from the scratch... Knocking in the wood that my installation does not go into this way...
