There are numerous topics on versions 5 asking basically the same questions and the answer hasn't changed there is no official release date notified nor is there a conformed list of features.

The one thing for sure is that you will find out here first.

Maybe ALWIL guys should make a sticky about it so we can just point all ppl asking about avast! 5 to that sticky.

They hate scheduling and promises ::)

Who said anything about schedules and dates or promises?

"We are actively working on avast! 5, release date is still unknown for now, but we will post more info when it's ready for public release or public beta testing."

Something alone these lines. Nothing fixed, just generic explanation for ppl to stop asking same thing over and over.

Uh... Don't we still have a few beta trials before v.5?

I'm expecting 4.9 before 5.0. ;)

Of course there will be 4.9 betas & rc's before 4.9 stables. ;D

We have a long road to 5.0. :'(

Well there is also meant to be an update to 4.8 due soon, and there should be a beta of that first ;D

So much speculation and version predicting.

I will be more than happy to be wrong - but I suspect a 4.8 point update from the team.  I doubt anything earth shattering will be revealed - I am sure the team is keeping their powder dry for the 5.0 release.

Let's give the next beta offering from the team the best workout we can - cos we (as well as the avast team) need all the improvement we can muster for the next major effort.

i hope they skip 4.9...
first i don't like the number 9 - it looks so "unatractive" :)
and the second thing is that i would say that the Avast team should concentrate on Avast! 5 - an update to 4.9 isn't necessary (in my opinion) and not worth spending time in it - it would be better if all the improvements directly come into v5.

Jimi Hendrix wanted his guitar amps to be louder. He told his amp maker "Everybody's amps go up to volume 10. I want mine to go to Volume 11." They tried to explain it to him...... "But Jimi, those are just numbers on a dial. When the dial is turned all the way to your right, that is as loud as it goes regardless of what numbers are on the knob."     but Jimi would not be dissuaded... "I want my amps to go to Volume 11." So the amp manufacturer took the exact same amps with the exact same knobs but re-painted all of the knobs on Jimi's amps so that the numbers went from 0-11. And Jimi was happy. I'm not sure what brought this story to mind. ;)

smoke, that's a very good story and nicely sums up my feelings about the issue.

I mean, I see many people ask "when is avast 5 going to be released" without actually knowing what's going to be in it.
So I suppose if we released the next interim update (originally dubbed as 4.8.something) as avast 5, these people would be perfectly happy :)

Not that we'll do it, but I find it somewhat funny.

But seriously, it looks like avast 5 will be released in H1 2009. At least that's what I can tell for now, without going into detail with respect to its features.

Cheers
Vlk

Vlk, I am glad you enjoyed the story. It is supposed to be a true story. I saw it in a movie about Jimi. I am happy that no one took it the wrong way.

I think AVAST! is a wonderful program, and am deeply grateful that you provide the free Home Version to the world. Thank you, and all AVAST! Team and Forum members. From the heart. :)

well i still think that a regular release of new and "big" versions is important...
not mainly for security reasons but for the financial situation...
i neither know the financial situation of avast! nor the strategy they use, but i know something about customer behavior and if they don't see a regular release of new versions (like the big antimalware-companys do yearly) they are not going to buy the product because it seems to be getting older early... (i know that reality its not like that, but most customers don't know that!)

i personally like the avast!-strategy with small programupdates and version steps, but for others it probably seems not very efficient or up-to-date...

so you are right, vlk, you can release anything as avast 5! the name and not the program behind the name is important!

Methinks Vlk is a very capable man who knows whereof he speaks.

Comment, whine, wail to your heart's content.  It will appear at that mans's will - not ours and I, for one, would not have it any other way.

Title: Re: When will avast! 5?
Post by: RejZoR on October 21, 2008, 09:23:45 AM
I think he meant H1 2009 as first quarter of 2009. Though we usually mark that as Q1 2009...
Title: Re: When will avast! 5?
Post by: alanrf on October 21, 2008, 09:34:34 AM
If Vlk meant Q1 rather than H1 I am sure he knows the difference without anyone's interpretation.  I bet the team will do their best to make Q1 but let's just take them at Vlk's word and show some patience for the first half of 2009.

Of course, and I am sure no one here thinks different! But that doesn't mean we have to stop talk about Avast 5 and speculate about it!

And I have read all post in this thread, and I don't see anyone that whine?

And I don't see the problems to look forward to Avast 5? Even if we all know that it is the Alwil Team that decide when to release a new version!

Thanks... could be this or, like others said, a typo.
Title: Re: When will avast! 5?
Post by: DavidR on October 21, 2008, 03:25:17 PM
Well that is the kind of typo I might make, but I think Vlk's typing skills are much better than mine and Q and H are pretty far apart on the keyboard ;D.

Me I'm in no rush, I'm not going anywhere, after all I have been using avast 4.x for over 4.5 years and boy has avast changed in that time ;D

So Alwil unlike other manufacturers don't slip to the next whole number every year as a marketing tool. Many of those changes I'm sure could have warranted a whole number increase rather than a 0.1 increment.

So version numbers are just that, numbers, when what we see in these supposedly small updates big changes in functionality/features and that is what counts, continued progress.

One day it will be called avast 5 and then we will have to change all the forum names, no more avast! 4 Home/Pro, avast! 4 Server, etc.
avast! 5 for Home/Pro just doesn't have that quirky play on words about it ;D

H1 indeed meant "first half" (I believe this is pretty standard acronym, isn't it?)

Feature-wise, the only thing I can promise is a totally new user interface.
And as some of you already anticipated, yes, it will be based on the same framework as the antirootkit tool.

Cheers

I usually use quarters (Q1,Q2,Q3 and Q4) otherwise i just type it with words to avoid confusions hehe.
So that would be like Q1 or Q2 2009, basically ;)

Typing whole words isn't that cool, or is it ?  :P Moreover, speaking about H2, you can always be mistaken that you mean your new SUV, which isn't a bad thing either.

Funny story... but it was Christopher Guest as the fictional Nigel Tufnel in "This is Spinal Tap" who's responsible for the line "These go to eleven".

Jim Marshall was Hendrix's "amp maker" and there's no suggestion from him that Jimi was ignorant or stupid.

Actually it was different amps... Sun or Orange I think but not sure. I suspect they borrowed that Hendrix story for the movie Spinal Tap. Maybe Jimi just thought it would be cool to have 11 on his amps - who knows. I think the story comes from the 1973 film Jimi Hendrix, but I have seen several Hendrix movies and am not certain which one it came from.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't know everything about Hendrix but I'd need more evidence before I could take this story seriously.

The only thing about numbers on amps I can recall is in  Keith Shadwick's biography (http://books.google.com.au/books?id=sbiSD1jXeaMC), see pages 248/9, where he mentions "the Hendricks setting" - all knobs at 10, and Jim Marshall recalls that James Marshall Hendrix (yes they shared 2 names) used "standard" 100 watt Marshall amps.

Yes I know this is way off topic.  :-[

Yes i agree that they should ask about features.. but i think it is also because avast 5 = new gui ...
and this i think is one of the mainly reasons of this "fever" because avast 4.x skins are going to be too obsolete..not well ordered.. and they do not give a lot of infos about what there is inside of it (example when anti-rootkit has been added for the ones who see changelog or follow forums has been clear.. but to the ones who just download avast and see gui.. they didn't felt anything new..)

If u look at Kaspersky 6 or 7 GUI u can see that everything has an icon/description and that u can turn it on or off.. and is not that they have a lot more features than avast.. but they are more able to "sell" it.. to give user perception of what the product offer.

I think avast relase a lot of engine updates and that is great but they do it in a too "silent" way ... by my point of view should also be considered that little cosmetic changes done by time to time (usually most antivirus make it once per year but avast is a loooong time with same gui.. some years i think) could help to give ppl the idea of a new engine inside the software.

I know it may seems stupid but it is a marketing thing.. and even if i am not an housewife in front of a computer... i have to admit that by time to time seeing changes in a gui make me happy  :P

Ps if final version is in the first half of 2009.. when a stable beta to download could be out? i can't wait to test!  ;D

I will be the first to admit my memory may be suspect with regards to a movie I saw 30 years ago. ;D  I have wanted to see it again. I will maybe look around and see if I can find it. It was a lot of interviews of people who knew Jimi interspersed with Concert Footage and interviews with Jimi himself. I liked it a lot when I saw it at college. 30 years ago. :o
