Hi guys
I need help on this one?
Web Shield is slowing down and stoping some websties from loading?
When i stop web sheild websites load ok and fast, even if i put webshield onto normal it does not help
i have to stop webshield for sites to load ok.
I am using firefox 3 win xp home sp3,
is there anyway to fix this?

Can you give some examples ?
Well Normal is the default setting, so what did you do to change that ?
e.g. did you make changes to the customize button settings.
What is your CPU and RAM ?
Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

No i did not make changes
to the customize button settings at all,
my CPU AND RAM Are p4 3.6 GHz and my ram is 3 GB.
I have not had any other Antivirus installed because i reformated my harddrive about 2 weeks ago,
and befor that in anyway i had avast installed.
And examples ? of websites i go to all my websites it was stoping there was this site avast.com youtube lots more.

Check out this - HOSTS file redirect - 127.0.0.1 check your HOSTS file using notepad or a text editor of your choice, C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts or do a search for HOSTS to find it if not there. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file)
This can be a common tactic for malware to block access to security sites, etc.
Are you able to get to avast.com using this link, http://75.125.29.226/ if so it could be that the HOSTS file is redirecting the avast.com domain as the above is one of the IP addresses for avast.com.
Some other examples will help because if I or others can visit them then you should too, but without the info I or others can't check them out.
What is your firewall ?

I have recently started to encounter the same issue.
WinXP Sp 3
No Firewall
Host file only contains 127.0.0.1 localhost
Any chance it is related to Win updates? It seems to have occured on or around last week's updates?

Well we have seen in the past around patch Tuesday that the windows update seems to consume resources in relation to internet connections and other updates. This however shouldn't last beyond your completion of said patch Tuesday updates.

I did already look at my host file there was noting there just my Host file only 127.0.0.1 localhost
my firewall is zonealarm free most up to date one,
It is not the websites that i go to that is the problem if it was then all the sites i go to would have something wrong with them,
It's like this if i have webshield on and what ever site i go to, it might load that page and it might not!
sometimes the pages will load very slowly with some pics missing and sometimes they will not load at all!
So i go in and Terminate webshield and then go to all the sites i was just on and bingo!! they all load really fast with no problems at all, then i re-test by going in and turning webshield back on and go to the same sites i was on and then i have the problems all over again! pages load very slowly or will not load at all.
I have also done this with zonealarm on and off its not zonealarm it's webshield causeing problems some how!!

Does anybody know how to fix this problem with webshield?

I am seeing the same thing. Both Firefox 3.03 and IE. Some sites are only partially loading. In other cases, it appears the DNS lookup isn't working correctly (possibly, not sure on that). When I stop the web shield, sites load correctly.

I am not seeing these issues with the folks I support on either Vista or XP. Please understand I am not saying that the issues you are seeing are not real, just that there is a difference.
Given your expertise as a consultant would you be comfortable in providing some traces (such as the well known free Wireshark product) when your problem is evident so that the avast team could analyze the Wireshark log?
By the way, have you utilized another AV product previously, if so how was it removed?

I am not seeing a slowing down nor stopping situation but then I do not use a software based firewall in my XP systems.

Ok i have found out what the problem is!
I have threadfire installed 4.0.0 from the time i turn threadfire off the problem is gone!
If you have threadfire and your getting these problems turn it off and test it?
let me know if this helps i would like to know?

ThreatFire, again, is messing Internet communication... Sometimes are Firefox extensions, sometimes other program installations, well... HIPS programs are just bringing glitches nowadays...

I am still having the issue.
No Threatfire installed on my machine.
I can download this text file instantly: http://web1.caryacademy.org/facultywebs/sam_morris/blogimages/PostcardTemplate.txt (http://web1.caryacademy.org/facultywebs/sam_morris/blogimages/PostcardTemplate.txt)
However this file loads slowly: http://web1.caryacademy.org/facultywebs/sam_morris (http://web1.caryacademy.org/facultywebs/sam_morris)
And most major sites: www.cnn.com (http://www.cnn.com), www.msn.com (http://www.msn.com), ... Never load.
If I Pause WebShield, they all load instantaneously.
This first began to happen Oct 23rd between 3pm (fine) and 6pm (slow poke).
Any ideas?

samandjt, which is your operational system? Firewall? Other security programs?

Windows XP Sp3.
Windows Firewall turned off. No other Firewall or antivirus.

I am also having the same problem. Firefox will load a page and keep trying to load something until I stop it. (advertising crap probably because it seems like the page loaded) I can browse the site however. Other times it won't even load. I stopped Web Shield and it is fine. I went to Internet Explorer and it doesn't have the problem with Web Shield. I have been using Mozilla and now Firefox for a long time but am getting really discouraged when IE6 is faster. Is this an Avast or a Firefox problem and how can it be fixed?

Seems Im not the only one having this isue.
I confirmed that this is the case. On both the custom, normal and high settings (trying alot of combos on custom of course) it lags general internet speed.
For clarification, I use avast home 4.8.1229 (dutch edition).
my windows is a XPhome SP3 on the following build:
Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.080814-1236 (Service Pack 3)
I run Sunbelt Personal Firewall 4.5.916.0
The odd thing I noticed is not just the lag but that the Webshield service on ashwebsv.exe keeps connections open. Long (and I mean long) after any browser has been closed and been confirmed both by firewall as Process Explorer to not be running, this executable keeps connections open. Even more odd. It still keeps sending and receiving on some ocasions.
I have noticed faster browsing when I either restart the webshield or my internet connection which both nuke the open connections. Of course in both cases they build up pretty quickly.
Hope anyone else has some ideas as to work around this problem other then turning the thing off.

To start, I'd recommend updating to the last program version (4.8.1282), maybe it will help.

After a lot of playing I came to the conclusion that all of the advertising crap was where I was having the problem and not the actual web page itself. I downloaded the plugin for Firefox called Ad Block Plus and everything seems great. I still don't know if the problem is Avast or Firefox though. Everything is happy, so far, and I don't have to look at all of the advertising either.
