Pruusst! LOL

False alarm. Avast identifies its own Signature updatefiles as a Virus!:)

Nothing to worry about. I think one Avast guy will answer soon.

"DAME" is an old(realy old) Virusconstructor(Mutation Engine if i remember correctly)

Same thing here.  Had to turn resident scanning off to get latest update file.  System scans clean after updating.

Very funny, indeed... ;D
Given the probability of such a phenomenon, I'd rather call it a miracle. :)

(maybe the End Of Days is coming...? ;D)

I second that - this DAME polymorphic definition is inside the avast! for about ten years and never caused a false alarm...

Anyway, we will release the new update in several minutes - with thes FA removed and with new Win32:Holar variant added - it seems to spread very fast in the near future!

It does not matter. Or just re-run virus database update, to be sure...

Shouldn't really be a problem.

Sorry for that,
Vlk

Sorry for the really old bump. I found the thread via a google search.

So this is a false alarm?

edit: scanning it a second time revealed nothing. The file changes dynamically, so it has to have been a fluke.

As a check to a possibly infected file you can upload the file in question to
either
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
or
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html
In you case upload the C:\Program Files\WinMX\settings.dat file to be on the safe side. ;)

I checked both and they both found nothing, so I guess it's a hoax.

Is your virus database updated? Was it when avast detect that 'hoax'?
If you scan it now, will avast show you a virus warning?

1) yes it is updated
2) yes
3) avast will not show me a virus warning when I scan it now.

avast will not show me a virus warning when I scan it now.
So... maybe a temporary problem or a non-updated vps at that time...
Maybe we shouldn't worry that much  ;) 8)

I just had this same message come up saying it found the virus in my Temporary Internet Files.  My database is current.  Is this a real virus and if so, does that mean I got it surfing somehow?

Delete your temporary files, schedule a boot-time scanning with avast, boot.

Maybe... it seems a replican infection...
The origing of it? Maybe surfing, maybe downloading...

Ok, thanks for the reply.  It was weird though because I wasn't doing anything at the time, hadn't downloaded anything and wasn't on any strange or unfamiliar websites.

DAME (Dark Angel M.E) virus was found and it can't be deleted by avast. I deleted it by myself, but avast still gives the same alert and I can't get rid of that alert. What should I do? Is this a dangerous virus?

If a virus is replicant (coming and coming again), you should:

1) Disable System Restore on Windows ME (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q264887) or Windows XP (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;%5BLN%5D;310405). System Restore cannot be disabled on Windows 9x and it's not available in Windows 2k. After boot you can enable System Restore again after step 3).

2) Clean your temporary files. You can use CleanUp (http://www.stevengould.org/downloads/cleanup/) or the Windows Advanced Care (http://www.iobit.com/AdvancedWindowsCarePersonal/index.html) features for that.

3) Schedule a boot time scanning with avast. Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning. Select for scanning archives. Boot. Other option is scanning in SafeMode (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315222) (repeatedly press F8 while booting).

4) It will be good if you download, install, update and run AVG Antispyware (http://www.ewido.net/en/). Some users recommend SUPERantispyware (http://www.superantispyware.com), Spyware Terminator (http://www.spywareterminator.com/) and/or a-squared (http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/) (take care about false positives).

5) Use the immunization of SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) or, which is better, the  Windows Advanced Care (http://www.iobit.com/AdvancedWindowsCarePersonal/index.html) features of spyware/adware cleaning and removal.

What is the infected file name, where was it found e.g. (C:\windows\system32\infected-file-name.xxx) ?  Check the avast! Log Viewer (right click the avast icon), Warning section, this contains information on all avast detections.

It is a little disappointing when you have to chase people to try and help them.
