Title: Problems with updates
Post by: twinhead on November 30, 2008, 02:41:52 AM
I am experiencing problems when Avast is updating - Firstly it freezes programs you are working on or freezes web access even though I have plenty of memory etc and have a fast Internet connection.

Also it takes for ever for the pop up notification of update to go away sometimes to the point of having to reboot to get rid of it - Any suggestions as to the cause of this and any suggestions as to a remedy?

1. What type of update was it, Virus database or Program ?
If program, yes this is going to take longer than the incremental virus database update.

2. Was this update initiated Automatically or by the User, e.g. after notification of a program update available ?
Automatic updates have a CPU% restriction to stop the update using too much and throttling other programs.
A user initiated update after either a notification an update was available or a manual update have no such restriction. This is because it is initiated by the user who presumably wouldn't do so when they were busy.

I believe it is the Virus database and happens automatically - the most annoying element though is the pop up which often just will not go away unless I reboot

I'm sorry but the virus database updates are measured in KBs rather than MBs and even on my dial-up connection the VPS updates are measured in seconds rather than minutes.

You never said if this was an auto update or a manually initiated one ?

So if this is a auto VPS update there is certainly something wrong with your system.

What Operating System are you using ?
What is your firewall ?
Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

Can you give some info on your systems, CPU & RAM ?

I alreay said automatically - It's not the times of the updates that is the problem - they happen quickly I get the audible "Virus Database has been updated" but the pop up notification lasts forever

OK I missed that and is one of the questions out of the way.

For me the notification stays up for about 10 seconds if I leave it alone, if I click th pop-up it displays info of the update and that yo can close. What happens if you click on the pop-up notification ?

So if the update happens quickly, but you still get it freezing other problems, which is strange but without some answers to the other questions that is all I can say. If you have an older OS then the restricted CPU% of an auto update doesn't work.

Strangely enough remnants of pop-ups/menus could possibly be firewall or graphics card related.
