Title: Malware or Virus...HELP! HiJackThis log provided
Post by: dr.know on December 11, 2008, 06:54:39 AM
I know I've got some kind of malware or virus on my computer.  Everytime I reboot, avast gives me a trojan horse error on the file csrss.exe located in the c:\users\***\ directory.  I delete the files (and windows defender finds a .dll file faulty and deletes it) and then reboot, but I get the same errors again!  The funny thing is, when I disconnect my computer from the internet and then reboot after deleting the files, I don't get any errors!  But the instant I reconnect the internet and reboot....boom virus/trojan alert from avast.  I've been running ccleaner to clean the registry, and it always finds a line or two that needs to be removed after each reboot.  But again, if I'm disconnected from the internet and reboot, when I run ccleaner again, it finds nothing!  It's like the computer's clean when disconnected from the internet.

Below is the log file from HiJackThis immediately upon booting up (while notifications from Windows Defender and Avast are up).  I am running Windows Vista Home Premium.  I hope someone can help:

Hope someone could analyze your HijackThis log...
Meanwhile, I suggest:

1. Clean your temporary files.
2. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast with archive scanning turned on. If avast does not detect it, you can try DrWeb CureIT! (http://www.freedrweb.com/cureit/) instead.
3. Use SUPERantispyware (http://www.superantispyware.com), MBAM (http://malwarebytes.org/mbam.php) or Spyware Terminator (http://www.spywareterminator.com/) to scan for spywares and trojans. If any infection is detected, better and safer is send the file to Quarantine than to simple delete them.
4. Test your machine with anti-rootkit applications (http://www.antirootkit.com/software/index.htm). I suggest avast! antirootkit (http://files.avast.com/files/beta/aswar.exe) or Trend Micro RootkitBuster (http://www.trendmicro.com/download/rbuster.asp).
5. Disable System Restore and then reenable it again.
6. Immunize your system with SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html).
7. Check if you have insecure applications with Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/software_inspector/).

Thanks a lot.....I will try a boot time scan as that's when the viruses/malware is detected.  I do hope someone can help me with my HJT logfile.  There are 2 lines I noticed that shouldn't be there....anyone's assistance in how to remove them is greatly appreciated:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows Logon Applicationedc] C:\Users\Shawn\winlogon.exe      <-----this file is not found in this folder...maybe it's hidden?
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSServer] rundll32.exe C:\Users\Shawn\AppData\Local\Temp\cbXNDWnl.dll,#1    <-----ccleaner removes this line, but upon reboot, comes back in a different variation.

I believe those two entries are whats causing the alerts, apparently the genuine winlogon.exe should be located in system32.Wait for a more experienced opinion, but I think you should consider using HJT to fix those entries.According to HijackThis.de those entries are nasty, one being the PROXYSER-R TROJAN.

Those entries will load very early in the Windows boot, so HijackThis! is probably not going to fix them.

avast! might in a boot time scan, if the malware is in its definitions.

You might be able to delete the files in Safe Mode with command Prompt.

Or you could burn a Linux LiveCD and boot from that: the malware files will be powerless to resist as you delete them.

Thanks very much for the feedback.  I will definitely try a boot time scan and hopefully avast can fix it.  If not, I will also try HiJackThis to fix it, but I do not know how to use the program (I keep reading that one should be very careful when using this program if you don't know what you're doing as it can cause serious damage).  How would I use HiJackThis to fix those 2 lines?

Run HijackThis! again, tick the two items, close all other windows and click 'fix'. Reboot into Safe Mode and delete the files (if found).

Anyone see any additional issues with my log file or is it just those 2 lines that are the culprit?
Title: Re: Malware or Virus...HELP! HiJackThis log provided

Okay I tried a boot scan with Avast and it found nothing.  I loaded HiJackThis and removed the 2 lines, but upon reboot the line with "winlogon.exe" still exists.  Any other ideas?  What's weird is there is no winlogon.exe file found in the C:\users\shawn\ folder for me to delete.

Right now because I'm disconnected from the internet, I'm not getting any virus errors from Avast and Windows Defender.  But if I reconnect and reboot, I'll get the virus errors....I'm at a loss!

Sorry, Dr know, but I do not see anything in your HJT log to be concerned about.

Perhaps someone else will see something I have missed.

C:\Users\Shawn\winlogon.exe

Please disable 'Hide protected operating system files' (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html) and enable 'View Hidden Files and Folders' (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#winxp), and upload the above file(s) to VirusTotal (http://www.virustotal.com/) for analysis. Post the results here.

Try a scan with DrWeb CureIT! (http://www.freedrweb.com/cureit/)

Manual instructions here. (If you're not confident editing the registry, don't- you could render your computer inoperable.)

Quote
To remove KillSec, please follow the instruction:

   1. Terminate the processes in Task Manager:
      smss.exe
      winlogon.exe

   2. Click Start > Run. Type REGEDIT. Then click OK. Navigate to and delete the subkeys:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Microsoft Windows Logon Process
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Microsoft Windows Session Manager Subsystem
      HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ib1dll6.CBrowserHelper
      HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\1E6CE4CD-161B-4847-B8BF-E2EF72299D69
      HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\8C691F25-C565-4FB7-8BCC-E85169BD7C47
      HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\14A5F3E7-B235-4D98-9264-5C67D2657BC4
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Current Control Set Control Init Reg Key

Looks like I got rid of the C:\users\...\winlogon.exe line and deleted the file (thanks for the tip of showing hidden windows files).  Is there anything else that looks suspicious in my HJT log?  I want to make sure my system's clean before re-connecting it to the internet.  The malware seems to stay at bay when disconnected from the net, but "turns on" when I re-connect to the net.

Is windows' firewall up and running?

Yup, it should be up and running...it was pre-malware infection.  I notice something in my log file for Ahead software (makers of Nero) but I recently uninstalled that program.  It could be nothing....

So I've been doing a lot of cleaning and I think my log file looks a lot better.  There's just one line below that has me scratching my head:

O23 - Service: Ares Chatroom server (AresChatServer) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Ares\chatServer.exe (file missing)

I've uninstalled Ares and ensured the folder was deleted (which is why it says file missing) but everytime I try to remove this line using HJT, it always comes back instantly.

Also please let me know if you see any other suspicious lines below.

PS - Windows Firewall is running (at least it says it's running when I check it in Control Panel)

I got rid of the AresChatServer line from my registry.  I re-connected my computer to the internet and booted it up.  I did not get any malware alerts upon rebooting.  I checked my HJT log when I rebooted and no new lines we added to it.  It looks like I was able to get rid of it with your help.  Thanks so much!  Much appreciated!
