I just installed avast 4 home on my desktop PC, and now it cannot load any http pages (it comes up with error 104 pages). I clicked my favorites links, and found that a https link works.
Any ideas?
I did not have Norton AV earlier, but McAfee (a pain to cancel subscription).

Did you use the McAfee removal tool to make sure you got rid of all of it? http://majorgeeks.com/McAfee_Consumer_Product_Removal_Tool_d5420.html is one source for it.
What antivirus are you using?
Take a look under On Access Protection Control/Web Shield/ Customize and try checking the "ignore local communications" on the first page.
If this doesn't work, then uninstalling the residue of McAfee with the removal tool, then uninstalling ( use avast! removal tool at http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html ) and reinstalling Avast! may be necessary.

Which is your firewall?
Is ashWebSv.exe (avast WebShield) allowed to connect?
