Title: using the newest home edition, blocks any and all downloads
Post by: wildthing423 on December 26, 2008, 04:59:21 PM
how do i stop this software from blocking downloads?  It blocks all downloads, ms update, windows defender, malwarebytes pro, etc etc.   I really like this software and I put it here to stop my kids from infecting, re-infecting my computer, but now it is blocking me from working.  every file on the internet can not possibly be infected!  I tried to search the form for an answer and received 406 pages of postings with similar criteria,,,,,,too much to look through.  Is there not a way to make it on demand so I can scan what i prefer?

Avast does not block downloads unless they are harmfull. Did you allow avast in your firewall settings?

Which is your firewall and is ashWebSv.exe (avast Webshield) allowed to connect?
Is your computer clean if you scan with malwarebytes?

eddy and tech

I understand that you say uninfected downloads are not blocked, but at this point in time that statement is incorrect.  all ms update dopwnloads are , well, mostly legit and it blocked all the downloads.  first I thought that it might just be the windows defender stamp so I removed it from the update list but it continued to block the other ms updates.  Likewise it blocked my adobe acrobat update, so this is why I posted in the first place.  my computer is uninfected, I have no warez or illegal proggies and that again is why I put avast on my computer because I do not trust my kids while they are on my computer unsupervised.  any suggestions.  can avast home not be set to on demand?

It's not designed to work only on-demand.
But, again, avast just scans, does not block.
You seem to have a firewall or an old antivirus installation in this computer and it seems to block the Internet.
avast is only an antivirus, not a firewall.

I am not one to be mean or hateful, but these answers are stupid. why!!!?  because it does block all downloads. no antivirus redundancy here.  It pops up a window along with a voice file saying a virus has been detected, and the window it pops up says only abort file.  so if you click the button thats says abort file it aborts.  if you x it out it aborts the file download. either way it aborts.  the files are not infected, they are from ms update.  you are stating that it only scans, I hate to disagree but you are more then wrong.  you are absolutely wrong! I will just uninstall it.  too bad I cant get my money back... I am not using a free version.

Abort file? Seems abort connection... This is a WebShield warning of an infected site...

files are not infected, they are from ms update.
Are you using Windows Update site?

Yes ... just where are you downloading these updates from?

Are you using Windows firewall or some other firewall??

We ask these questions because we know from our own experiences that avast does not block Windows updates. The answers may seem stupid to you, but, you are having a problem and are asking us for help.

So, instead of getting defensive with us, please remain calm and answer our simple questions.

Wildthing423, please calm down, first.

Do you know how internet addresses work?  They are basically set of numbers but they are tough to be remembered by average human beings.  So, there is a system called domain name system (http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name_system), which  "translates" these numbers into addresses composed of words.  This works like Zip/Postal code to street-based addresses.  Now, what happens if someone with ill intention replaces the list of addressee with wrong ones in order to lure unexpected users into infecting their computers with malware?  For example, this is quite common a method to build botnets, or zombie computer networks which are used for illegal activities, and we are suspecting that your computer may have fallen into the trick and that Avast! is warning to you.

Of course, this is just a possibility but, mind you, it's a common trick as I wrote.  So, please follow the instruction of our fellow forum members.  ;)
