Avast到现在才只是4.8。我想问问2009版的Avast什么时候推出啊？
中国的一些比如“瑞星”、“金山”早在几个月前就出2009了，Avast怎么到现在还没有啊？比如知名的“卡巴斯基”在两三个月之前也有8.0了。

My reply :
The version numbers mean very little if the quality is absent. One thing about alwil software (and the avast team) that everyone here likes too much is that they do not release a new version just to increase the version number. But, they do release a new version when there is a need and when that version is of the quality that is satisfactory to the programmers and those of us who beta test the new versions. Also, to my way of thinking, lower version numbers mean that a quality program is being produced so that many newer versions are not needed so often.
At this time, we have been told that avast! 5 should be released sometime during the first quarter of 2009 but there is yet to be a set date for release. More so, there has not yet been any beta testing. Perhaps beta testing will begin soon but we will just have to wait and see.

The projection for avast 5 has been placed in the first half of 2009 by the avast team, first quarter would be nice but that is no more than wishful thinking.

Allthough 4.8 is out for several long years I can guess that we might increase the major version number every 2 or 3 years. We now have 4, so it will takes us about 600 years to produce avast 2009.

and will the number after the 4.8 - actually 1296 every times rise, or is it going to be reseted to 0 when the next major version (avast 5) is going to be released?

ya the thread starter mentioned 2 Chinese antivirus software (Rising & Kingsoft Duba), as well as kaspersky 8.0.

Yes that is the point avast has never stooped to the annual renumbering tactic, which is more marketing than substance in many cases or more bells and whistles than functionality.
I have been using avast for almost five years now (March 2004) and I can't recall what the version was, something like 4.3 or 4.6. In those five years I have seen much improvement in avast and the addition of extra functionality, which other AVs might have called a whole version number increment and not a point increment.
So by me reckoning avast would have been at version 8.0 by now ant the next one being version 9.0 and not 5.0 when it is finally released ;D ;D

I remember i started using avast! when it was back at version 4.1 and some minor build. And now we are closing in to 5.0.
Actually ALWIL is using a compeltelly different philosophy for version numbers. First number is for really huge changes that involves massive changes to all parts of the program (like the ones for upcoming 5.0), second number is for major changes (when they introduced new technologies like Web Shield, Network Shield or rootkit technology), third number is for minor builds, usually smaller changes and bug fixes.

I concur with o2xygen. Quite amusing although it's very taxing for the long time members of the forum that dedicate their time to help but are unable because of the language barrier.
Hard Moderators
I disagree. They are doing their best with what you are offering and the tools at their disposal. You have to meet them half way and write your text in Chinese and then in English (or just English).
Most Forum Users speak English as a second language. French and Spanish are also other languages I've seen used a few time but I digress.
Try to understand that we are limited by the communication aspect. We can't help if we are not certain what the question is.
