Title: AVAST Detects another Antivius Scanner at system start
Post by: Kereama on April 27, 2004, 03:48:09 PM
when I start my system av informs me that nortons scanner is active and avast can only run email protection. I had uninstalled notons and removed all reference to norton or symantec from the registry before I installed AV.  Any idea what is happeng here

removed all reference to norton or symantec from the registry before I installed AV.

obviously not thoroughly enough ;)
try the special Cleaner from Symantec's website, and/or follow their instructions for manual removal

did you run a RegCleaner, too ?

Used a regcleaner and have checked out all the running programs and none of them are any thing to do with nortons or symantec. I will check out your suggestions Thanks

Makesure that all the program files are deleted including those in the Common Files directory and under your Application Data directory.

Might want to use BeClean or simular program to cleanup the dead references as well.  Norton is well known to use reg entries using serial or product numbers as well as those specifically id'd using the Norton or Symantec name.  It is due to these reg entries that causes auto detect to think Norton is still loaded.

The worst thing, it IS loaded. The drivers (either NAVAP or NAVAPEL) or clearly being loaded to memory on your machine -- that's the only check avast is doing...

have you tried Vlk's advice ?

please delete the following reg keys:
HEKY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NAVAP
HEKY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NAVAPEL

(if exist) and reboot the machine. That will solve the problem...

-->  don't those entries exist, or can't you delete them ?
log-in as ADMINISTRATOR  !!

have you searched in the SERVICES panel, or in
deviceManager -> View/show hidden devices -> Non-PnP-devices,
if there's anything from NORTON/Symantec/NAV?
rightclick on potential candidates and look in their properties

Don't delete anything there if you're not sure !!
best report the results here first..
