Title: Problem encountered with avast update 090109-0
Post by: alanrf on January 10, 2009, 03:02:43 AM
Just before started my weekly scan avast had updated to 090109-0.

When I started my weekly scan (using ashquick.exe) it hung on this file:

C:\Documents and Settings\****\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\6.0\TMGrpPrm.sav

Which is a 54 byte file that has been there since 2006.

ashquick was consuming 50% of CPU capacity and not performing any I/O.

I repeated the scan using the standard GUI (thorough with archives) and ashSimpl.exe hung with the same conditions on the same file.

The same hang occurs on the .sav files in:

C:\Documents and Settings\****\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\8.0\

On reverting my system to immediately prior to the avast update (taking me back to 090108-0) then ashquick and ashSimpl have no problems scanning these files.

I also have this same problem with the update 090109-0, it stops scanning at C:\Documents and Settings\****\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\7.0 on my comptuer and C:\Documents and Settings\****\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\6.0\ and C:\Documents and Settings\****\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\7 .0\ on my mother's computer.

If three comptuers hang up at the same place it appears that the problem is in the update not the comptuers.

The scan worked fine last night before the update to 090109-0

Same problem here with the same file.  Only option was to cancel.  Must be a problem with the update!!!

Can somebody please upload the file to ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming ?
Thanks!

One more question: if you scan the file alone (with Explorer Extension), does the freeze also occur? If not, maybe the program actually stops at the next file (alphabetically, if you're on NTFS) in that folder...
(so, in that case we'd be interested in the real file causing the problem, of course)

Same problem here, hangs 50% CPU when doing a thorough scan.

Scanning printhood from Explorer hangs on:
C:\Documents and Settings\mike\PrintHood\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\8.0\TMDocs.

A complete scan of C: shows stopping at nethood although scanning nethood from Explorer OK.

Has this problem been raised formally with Avast?

The problem is fixed in the latest VPS (090110-0).
Sorry for the troubles.

My kudos to you also Igor.  I was pulling my hair out, and I don't have that much to spare!

I suggest you update Acrobat to version 9 ( instead of 7 and 8 ). A lot of vulnerabilities were fixed if I'm not wrong.

Good advice Tech but, in my case (and likely for others too) the files involved are old junk that Adobe leaves around when it updates.

This problem was going to affect anyone performing a through scan with archives who had used previous versions of Adobe Reader.
