Title: Auto scan settings
Post by: carolivy on February 19, 2009, 12:01:49 AM
Hi,
I'm new to Avast...I was previously using AVG and was having problems after the update so decided to try Avast. With AVG I could choose a time to scan my computer each night and would like to know if there is a setting for a time when I want my computer scanned? Thank you for your help. :)

Personally I don't feel there is a need for a nightly scan when you have a slew od resident scanners trying to stop the malware getting on your system in the first place.

However there is no scheduled scan function in avast, this is one of the restrictions in the free version, unlike avg free which restricts the protection levels/functions. avast's Home version has virtually all the features of the Pro version, but requires interactive input and no scheduler.

These automated options are only available in the Pro version. This is a limitation of the Home (free) version that it has interactive input requirement, there have to be differences in the Home/Pro version and this is one of them, the programmers have to eat ;D

Check this work around out -  HOWTO: Scheduled Automatic Scans avast! Home Version! (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=3796.0)

Thank you for your help and the link. Forgive me if I'm wrong here but is the On-Access Scanner scanning in the background while I'm online? ???

Yes, both the network shield (blocking access to known malicious sites) and the web shield that scan the http traffic on port 80 before it is placed in your temporary internet files.
