Post by: poulabas on March 09, 2009, 10:11:59 PM
I just bought a Dell inspiron mini 1210 and after 2 windows xp install (quick format), avast will not install.
Computer came with norton internet security.
Tried Norton removal toll; Still can not install Avast.

What else could it be?

I see no problems in your log but I need to see the last lines, not the first ones.

1) Remove NAV or Norton 360 through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
2) Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Norton_Removal_Tool_for_Windows_2000XPVista/1169144666/1) or Norton Removal Tool for Windows 98/Me (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Norton_Removal_Tool_for_Windows_98Me/1169144666/2). Boot.
3) Install avast! (or repair the installation) and boot.

The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products and Norton 360 from your computer.

I also tried avast pro and it installed, but for some reasons, it will not install the update from the internet.
It starts the installation after the download but the programs stops the install in the middle of the installation.

Here it is again, log from avast home edition.

poulabas, this is the middle of the log, not the last lines... ::)
Are you saving (before executing) the setup file to your desktop or you're running directly from Internet?

Tech, I found the full setup log in progam files. :-[

I downloaded the latest version (home and pro) from your website and saved to my documents before installation.

I am still trying but nothing seems to work...

Tech, It is not going good.
I have just finished installing windows xp sp3 with a full disk format. I then tried installing Avast and after a few seconds going into the installation it stops with another invalid file signature in the setup.log file.

The installation was clean besides the Intel chipset drivers. No graphic drivers yet.

This is with the latest version downloaded from your website.

So, what is it???

Yeah... the same...
Did you try the steps on the #1 reply?

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and use it for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the latest avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html) version.
6. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.

Tech, just finished everything you mentionned to do.

Did not improve anything. Same, same thing. (Log included)

By the way Avast does not even make it to the control panel for uninstallation.
So, just awsclear was used.

Tech, what is next?

Anybody else's having this issue?

I downloaded the file you linked me and once on my computer I did a file compare and found them to be identical.

I decided to try it just in case and did installation starting from scratch again for the 6th time.

Did not work. Log included.

Should I just give up and go with another antivirus. All my computers use Avast and I have never had problems like that before.
Not before I bought this new computer.

Not that I doubt for a moment the advice given to you by my friend Tech but I felt someone should try the advice and see if your problem is reproducible.  I just did this on my main system (Dell XP with Win XP Pro SP3).

Sorry to say (at least for you) that I could not reproduce the problem you are seeing.  However ... when I compare your setup log and mine (attached) there are very clear differences.  The major early difference is that the "factory specs" of your Dell lead avast to believe that you have IE 6 installed on your system.  I am fairly amazed that Dell would deliver you a system recently with IE 6 installed.

If indeed you do have IE6 in your factory defaults then I cannot explain why that may cause a problem with installing avast.  There is one other possibility.  Most Dell systems (mine did) come with a default antivirus already installed.  If you are restoring your system from the Dell recovery partition then you would need to ensure the fullest removal of that default AV placed by Dell before installing avast.

I know that you do not want to be exposed before installing avast but you may also want to consider updating to IE 7 and then trying the avast installation again.

You can force an installation by this command on the folder you've donwload and save the install file: setupeng.exe /forceinstall
Where setupeng.exe is the name of the executable.

To debug, add the following lines to setup.ini (in avast4\setup):
[BufferLog]
Enable=1

Then start update again, and SetupDbg.log should be generated. Post the contents here, it should give us a clue at which step it crashes.

alanrf, I have tried your suggestion and took all the update from microsoft, including ie 7. Unfortunately, I still can not install avast.

Tech, I can't get Avast to install following your suggestion. It does not even make it to control panel, so setup.ini only contains those 2 lines:

FailSafeServer=C:\DOCUME~1\Serge\LOCALS~1\Temp\_av_sfx.tm~a02804
[UpdateSummary]
LastErrorMsg=Invalid file signature. Setup will terminate.

Title: Re: Can Not Install Avast 4.8 home (Log inside)

I installed Avast Pro and when the system reboots it crashes with the blue screen. So I had to boot in safe mode and use awsclear to be able to use my computer again.

I have run HijackThis just to see and did not found anything special and as you can tell in the log, I am unfortunately using another antivirus program.

Could it just be that Avast software is not compatible with the hardware/software on this computer. Most likely hardware since Avast does not install even after a clean Windows install and full format done.

I would love to use Avast but it seems the options are running out.

avast is not incompatible with any hardware (although it has system requirements).
Are you sure that there isn't any preinstalled software? Man... it's difficult to guess what's happening...

Preinstalled software?

As soon as windows xp finished installing, I tried installing Avast so the system would be clean don't you think?

I have 3 legal copy of Windows xp and I have tried them all before installing Avast.
I have never seen anything like this. We have 5 computers all running avast except for my new Inspiron 1210.

Well looking at your log you still have AVG8 installed.

C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgtray.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVG8_TRAY] C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgtray.exe
O23 - Service: AVG Free8 WatchDog (avg8wd) - AVG Technologies CZ, s.r.o. - C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgwdsvc.exe

You need to uninstall that if you did you still have remnants left and you need to run this tool - AVG8 Remover, download tool from here, http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-tools (http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-tools) there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows version, ensure you use the correct one.

Even if you didn't uninstall AVG8 you should run this tool after you uninstall it using add remove programs.

Dear DavidR, The log you saw from hijackthis was done immediately after AVG was installed.
I went for avg since avast does not install.

Now, I am running without complete antivirus protection.

Title: Re: Can Not Install Avast 4.8 home (Log inside)

I have been following it and I'm at a loss as to what to suggest since most of what usually resolve this has been tried.

Are you installing avast from an account with administrator privileges ?

After uninstalling avast using add remove programs - When you ran the avast uninstall utility, did you run it from safe mode ?

That is the only thing that I can think of where there might be remnants of the old installation.

I'm also confused as to how you are actually installing avast as you say it doesn't even make it to the control panel but here it is trying to update ???
<snip>
Tech, I can't get Avast to install following your suggestion. It does not even make it to control panel, so setup.ini only contains those 2 lines:
[DownloadSettings]
FailSafeServer=C:\DOCUME~1\Serge\LOCALS~1\Temp\_av_sfx.tm~a02804
[UpdateSummary]
LastErrorMsg=Invalid file signature. Setup will terminate.

Though this was possibly earlier.

I would suggest downloading direct from avast and save it to your hard disk somewhere you can find it again, rather than try to download and install in one action.

When you have it saved to your hard disk you should be able to install from an account with admin privileges or using the run as (right click on the setupeng.exe file) administrator. But I have to admit this is clutching at straws as I haven't come across this before.
Title: Re: Can Not Install Avast 4.8 home (Log inside)
Post by: poulabas on March 12, 2009, 09:19:00 PM
1- Yes, I am using Admin privileges.

2- Yes, I ran the avast uninstall utility from safe mode.

3- Avast was trying to update only when I switched to Avast Pro.

4- I have saved multiple copies of avast that I simply renamed to setupeng-1,-2... before installation was carried out from my hdd.

If you get any more ideas, I am ready to try them.

Thanks.

This really is a tough one as all of the usual suspects have been rounded up and the usual options tried.

I don't know if it is possible to install avast from safe mode or not or if it would work, I guess you could try it and see.

Outside of that I feel we need some intervention from one of the Alwil team.

But I need more instructions on how to "/forceinstall".
Open a cmd command windows.
Write down the full path of the downloaded setup file, for instance:
"C:\Documents and Settings\Your name\Desktop\Setupeng.exe" /forceinstall
and then click enter.

Well, I tried with /forceinstall and it did not work as seen in the setup.log.
The install was done with a full removal using awsclear in safe mode rebooting twice in total before installation of Avast.

I will try in safe mode...
Title: Re: Can Not Install Avast 4.8 home (Log inside)
Post by: poulabas on March 13, 2009, 01:31:11 AM
Guys, thanks. Safe mode did it.
I finally got avast installed through your help. This was done in safe mode. In the log you will see that I did not do a complete uninstall before attempting an installation in safe mode. Because i was getting sick of botting.

So far it has made the system crash twice when program starts scanning memory at first.

But the biggest problem now is that the program fails to install the update downloaded from the net.

It gives the same message "invalid file signature. Setup will terminate".

Tech, I added the line in setup.ini.
[BufferLog]
Enable=1

So, do you have an idea how to go through the update or should I start/follow another thread?

Post by: poulabas on March 13, 2009, 01:45:36 AM
Tech, I got SetupDbg.log if you want to take a look at it.

Title: Re: Can Not Install Avast 4.8 home (Log inside)
Post by: DavidR on March 13, 2009, 01:49:24 AM
Well that is a start.

1. is there any BSOD information stop error code, any files named, etc. in the crashes ?

There should also be some minidump.dmp files created also those could help the developers at Alwil if we can get some divine intervention from them, we are just avast users like your self (eventually).

2. Personally I wouldn't try an update download from the net (well I'm not too sure what you are doing), but a manual update, right click the avast 'a' icon, select Updating, iAVS Update. Or was that what you did ?

I think the update issue is related to the original problem so splitting it off I don't think is a good idea.

Do you have a router and does it have a firewall ?
As it would appear that something is messing with the download and corrupting something so it doesn't validate.

Title: Re: Can Not Install Avast 4.8 home (Log inside)
Post by: poulabas on March 13, 2009, 02:48:09 AM
Yes I get stop error code but no files named in the crash.
It's always the same invalid file signature message.

Yes, I am using manual update.

I am using a router which is hardware/software firewalled. I do not think it would cause a problem since my other 4 computers have no problems updating.

It seems Avast is allergic to this computer/software configuration.

But in the logs you can tell that vps-9020500.vpu package fails the md5 checksums.

This could take time to find.

You could try downloading the full VPS 23MB I believe and run that and see if that validates.

avast! VPS Update - Manual Download (http://www.avast.com/eng/updates.html) - For updating an off-line systems, download using a system with internet connection, save the file to a CD or USB drive and transfer it to the off-line system and run it to update the VPS signatures file.

Or you could try, Incremental VPS update work around for off-line system.

The quote below works (copied the 400.vps file from my fully up to date system to my old system which wasn't fully up to date), tested on off line system requires a reboot for the WSC to also recognise the updated VPS.
Ok, i tested exactly what i suggested and it appears it works. I've used old installation from May 2008 in virtual machine. Copied 400.vps and clnr0.dll from host system to VM system and avast! showed signature date identical to the one on host system. And that even without system reboot. Now i don't know if everything works as it suppose to but it seems to be a good start.

That is me for the night 2:32 a.m here.
Title: Re: Can Not Install Avast 4.8 home (Log inside)
Post by: poulabas on March 14, 2009, 12:04:02 AM
David, I downloaded the vpsupd.exe file and to my surprise it said "vps database is already up to date".
So I went for a program update through avast icon, "right click, Updating, Program Update".
It then downloads a 2.9 Mb file but when it tries to install in the system, it either crash or gives me an "invalid file signature" box.

So right now it seems only the program can not be installed or updated through the internet. I don't get it.

The message I got when I get the blue screen "A problem has been detected..." is: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA.

I could probably install the updates in safe mode since this is the only way I managed to install Avast, but in safe mode I would have to learn how to load my Wireless/LAN driver first.

I seem to be a rare case but then most people do not restart from scratch a brand new laptop computer like I always do...
Title: Re: Can Not Install Avast 4.8 home (Log inside)
Post by: DavidR on March 14, 2009, 01:26:42 AM
It is most certainly a rare case as this is the first time I have come across something like you are experiencing and I have been on the forums for close to five years.

A 2.9MB update is huge for an incremental update, so if you right click the avast icon and select about avast, what Program Version (4.8.1335 is latest) and VPS Version (090313-0 is latest) are reported ?

You could try the safe mode install of the vpsupd.exe file, though personally I don't think that would work as avast doesn't run in safe mode by default and I think avast would need to be running for it to work.

You say you have other systems with avast you could try the coping the 400.vps as suggested and see how that gets on.

The error PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA is a strange one as there are some report it as RAM errors or other that say it is driver related.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/reskit/w2000Msgs/6093.mspx (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/reskit/w2000Msgs/6093.mspx)
Quote from: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
Explanation:. This Stop message occurs when requested data is not found in memory.

http://www.techspot.com/vb/all/windows/t-38458-Page_fault_in_nonpaged_area.html (http://www.techspot.com/vb/all/windows/t-38458-Page_fault_in_nonpaged_area.html)
http://forums.techarena.in/windows-xp-support/501863.htm (http://forums.techarena.in/windows-xp-support/501863.htm)

So you could have a bad memory stick, clutching at straws again here. If you have multiple sticks, you could try swapping them with only one in at a time, etc. This however, is a tough one to pin down.
Title: Re: Can Not Install Avast 4.8 home (Log inside)
Post by: poulabas on March 14, 2009, 03:01:20 PM
David, I have program version 4.8.1335 but the vps is 090205-1 or Feb 5 2009 which is not good. I had another blue screen "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" but this time it said "the problem seems to be caused by the following file: win32k.sys. And I only get this blue screen when trying to update the vps engine itself.

I also tried installation in safe mode but I get message return box "VPS database is already up to date", and same message if I try in a normal session.

The 2.9 MB incremental seems to be the right size since my VPS file date back to Feb 5 2009 and is the one that will not install.

I am going to try the copying of the 400.vps file but something will have to change because I don't plan to keep updating my laptop manually.

So something is stopping the software to update.
But what is it?
Title: Re: Can Not Install Avast 4.8 home (Log inside)
Post by: Eddy on March 14, 2009, 03:28:00 PM
Instead of a software error, it is possible that the problem is caused by (partially) broken hardware. Although it is a new system, it doesn't mean all hardware is in perfectly working order. I suggest you get and run MEMTEST (http://www.memtest.org/) to start with. Let it run overnight. Also get the drive diagnostic tool from the manufacturer and run it.

@ poulabas
The win32k.sys is a windows system driver and would fall in line with the problem being either RAM or driver, so I would suggest you try that memory test Eddy gave the link for.

For some people an avast repair gets things back in sync, were there is an inconsistency in the reported VPS version of about avast and when you check for updates, etc. Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

I'm still hoping for some input from one of the Alwil team as this is beyond anything I have experienced, they really would be the only one to dig deeper into this.

Usually they would ask for the minidump files created on the crash to be uploaded to the ftp server for analysis. We could try than and see if it sparks some action, though that source isn't monitored by default only when requested.

Upload them to ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming - Connect to the link and drag the file into the Right pane and drop it, that starts the upload, you don't have read access to this folder. Give the minidump.dmp file a unique name like poulabas-minidump.dmp so it couldn't be mixed with another minidump.dmp upload.

David and Eddy,
Full hardware diagnostics was carried out twice and everything passed.

David, I tried the repair option and I got a message box saying,
"Error processing packages"
"please use full update".

I am going to follow your last advice and submit "minidump files"  through their ftp server.

Thanks, I know it's a long one but I would like finding the cause of it.

Eddy, I ran Memtest86+ v2.11to your request and all tests passed.

I am pretty sure that Avast must not be compatible with this laptop since it is the only software that crashes my computer when trying to update the vps incremental from the internet.

I have tested hardware extensively and I went through 3 windows xp installation from scratch. Even if as soon as windows xp finished installing, Avast would not install but in safe mode.

Alwil, do you want to buy my computer?

maybe is because your windows has components that have not been updated, why dont you try to do a Microsoft Update, and after that update, maybe it could install. As an observation, i had some installation issues in a win xp pro 64 bits, but all gone after microsoft update. And i downloaded and installed latest version from avast. thats all. Hope it works. Take care.

You pc has a SSD HDD, am i right? maybe it has something to do with the configuration of your pc, but why dont you try updating your .Net framework to latest, 3.5 SP1. And also why dont you try COMODO System Cleaner, and do a powerclean.

You can download COMODO System Cleaner at http://system-cleaner.comodo.com/download.html (http://system-cleaner.comodo.com/download.html)
and the .Net framework from here http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/0/e/20e90413-712f-438c-988e-fdaa79a8ac3d/dotnetfx35.exe (http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/0/e/20e90413-712f-438c-988e-fdaa79a8ac3d/dotnetfx35.exe)

1- When I say all updates, it also means Microsoft Net framework 1.1 and 3.5.

2- I don't need to do any clean up, I am on a fresh XP install.

3- My machine has a true 80 GB hdd 1.8 inch at 4200 rpm.

Well, the clean up will clean all registry keys that are invalid, as shortcuts, and other stuff, it doesnt matter if it is a clean install or not, windows has errors in the registry and they are not fixed by magic, i suggest you to do the power clean, maybe some file is corrupt or something is wrong in the windows registry or in some dll, and this will fix it. Im trying to help you, so you could try it, you dont have anything to lose. In every machine i have checked, there is always some errors in windows, and the comodo system cleaner helps to make windows to run better and to fix the errors.

I agree XP is not perfect, however, I currently have around 25 programs installed on my machine and Avast is the only one that crashes my machine on install and updates.

So until something improves, I will running with Avira...

I regret the problems you have encountered and I understand your decision.  You have given avast a very good chance.

I can only report that for me and the folks I directly support avast is a great product but there may well be circumstances (sorry we did not find the root of them) that prevent it being the same experience for you.  avast has more than 75 million users (I suspect that the largest segment may still be on XP) and, for almost all of them, it works well.  I know that does not help you today ... I hope that, if you experience problems with other solutions, you will give avast another try and that it will prove itself to you.

Hey people, thanks for the good words. This is a great forum, and I have had great support to my problems.

I haven't really given up. Avast free home edition is at the top for many virus, malware and spyware detection. It's also very CPU light (beside update installation) which is very important for me.

I have also been contacted by an Alwil programmer to help me find the problems.

That's very good support if you ask me.

Support is a thing often forgotten when deciding what to go with, it is a shame you have had to go through the pain though.

Guys try this it works for me... because i also have the same error and i successfully installed it by doing this

1. Delete files of avast! including folders, log file, avast setup, etc.
2. Go to the command prompt type regedit and use ctrl+f(or right click then find)
   and type avast
3. Delete all registry of avast(most of the files are in the hkey_users)
note: be careful in deleting registries(im sure you dont want to mess up your registry)
4. After deleting all files and registry now download the setup in www.avast.com
5. The setup will run smoothly without error (it works for me ^_^) and didnt even use any
   programs

Hope this solution works! :)

Great day!
