I've looked around, the answers are probably right in front of my face and I can't see them. :-[
I read a thread regarding timing of scans. It appears that with Pro you can set it to scan at a certain time, but with Home you cannnot. Is that correct?
What about updates? Can one set Home to look for updates every X number of days? If one can't, what is the default? I can't find it. I don't really like having an AV program and not knowing when it's updating. :(

Yes, the Pro version includes the scheduler - you can "program" given task to be run at given date/time. In the Home version, it is possible to simulate this feature to some extent using the Windows Scheduler - there was some info (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=3796;start=msg27225#msg27225) on this forum.
For the updates, I would suggest to check the FAQ page (http://www.avast.com/i_kat_314.html) - look for the text How does the update service work.
