Title: My compuer wont boot correctly with keyboard attached
Post by: jimturner on March 16, 2009, 12:51:37 AM
Started this morning  After unplugging keyboard, noticed it booted normally, except had no use of keyboard  Mouse works fine  I tried three keyboards and all the same  When I plug in keyboard in midboot, or after booting mouse freezes and I have to unplud to start the process over  Any suggestions would be great.

The type of keyboard and mouse, please (USB/wireless/"old fashioned plug"), and the OS.
Has it worked normally before now?
Do you think this is anything to do with Avast, and if so, why?
What was the last thing done on the computer before the problem occurred? (Software installed/uninstalled etc)

Sometimes reinstalling the relevant software can fix this sort of problem.

Welcome to the forum.

Nothing atypical.  I was on my AOL last night before bed  The plugs are oldfashioned Green and Purple pin plugs  I noticed in the last few weeks a screne saver will start early and I have a delayed effect on engaging the computer after I move the mouse around, but not too unusual

Have a look in the taskmanager, and see if you notice anything (apart from "system idle process") hogging a lot of CPU.
That might give a clue.
Can you advise the OS, please.

If you have XP->,
Start > Run > OSK
will give you an onscreen keyboard for diagnostic purposes.

I forgot I have "OSK" in the Run drop-down list. :-[

You'll have to "Browse..." to: C:\WINDOWS\system32\osk.exe

or: Start > All Programs > Accessories > Accessibility > On-Screen Keyboard

PS: Thanks David. While you were posting.. etc.

You can get to it via the mouse, I went looking using Help & Support, Accessibility, Features for people who have mobility impairment.

From that screen there is a list, click the On-screen Keyboard overview.

There is a link which can be clicked to Open the On-Screen Keyboard. Or you can go from a different direction and probably easier.

To open On-Screen Keyboard, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to Accessibility, and then click On-Screen Keyboard.

jimturner, or you have a severe problem with the keyboard (most of all are plug-and-play with XP) or you need to update drivers, maybe going to Windows Update site and see if there are new available.
Also, into Control panel > System > Hardware devices, are there any of them marked with an yellow question mark (?)
