Please check the event log, Antivirus category. Does it show any entries?

Also, try to manually start the avast! Service. Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services. Can you start it? If not, what error messages do you get?

This is often caused by entering incorrect username/password pair when installing avast.

Did you try to start the service? Did you get any error messages?

So the service started? [Y/N]

Check the Task Manager, Processes tab. Is aswServ.exe on the list? [Y/N] (better sort the list first by pushing the column header)

The blue (a) ball tray icon is still crossed? And you get an AAVM/RPC error when you doubleclick it?

Thanks

The Windows Task Manager can be started e.g. by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and pressing the Task Manager button. Its Windows has 3 or 4 tabs -- one of them is called 'Processes' - that's the process list.
