Well I always asked around about this. As far as I know there isn't much that this does that avast doesn't At the same time it doesn't consume much memory. I personally leave it on.

It found some registry belongs to Kazaa after full scan. I don't know if they were dangerous files but i know Kazaa is full of spyware ( I installed it to test some antispyware ) I have MBAM and SAS in my pc and they didn't detect that registry items. So it was surprising for me honestly i didn't think that Win. Defender would find it.

WD detects changes in the system and it works like HIPS and there is also task manager inside. You can see what's running in memory and start up. It doesn't tire my computer ( Pentium 4 2.0, 512 Ram ) and works silently. I have been using it for one month and i am happy with it.

But it would be nice to see a test of on access and on demand  detection of spyware in virtual machine.

I use Defender and seems least of any problems. No viruses. But I post here today because last night my auto update of latest Defender definition failed to download (retried 3 times through update center). Then I went to Malware Protection Center at link  http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/  and download the definition update manually (32bit option in right hand column). Everything seems okay today.

I'm also interested in any info on Defender. Seems to work well with Avast. So far anyway.

Also, while I was at MS security I bypassed Silverlight install, but when I took a quick peek at a video on security issues - only a few frames - Silverlight seemed to try and install automatically. So Im going to install it now. Any issues arisen with Silverlight? Havent actually tried a search yet. Can start a new thread if warranted.

Also. hope to start working with Adobe flash images soon. Also no try search yet. But may warrant a thread anyway since Active X so prominent when running Adobe gear. Can come back to this once I have Adobe workshop up and running. May take a while though. Seems time-consumimg. Thought best open subject sooner better than later. May be some stuff already posted.

Okay I ran search on Silverlight and on Adobe.

Lots to look through. Keep me busy for a while, provided no unexpected other problems turn up.  8)

Fair enough. Silverlight and Adobe out of place on Defender thread. :-\

Just that with layered platform, software programs and apps run as not always compatible team - auto updates can confuse things even more. I havent had a virus in ages but I always working /shifting my software team as circumstance demands so still have problems. I think Defender update failure tied in with a work / shift circumstance where changes were made (cleaning older, unwanted apps, include .NET framework stuff I had go to MS installer kb articles for). Maybe not resolved then but seems okay now, and Defender should be fallen back in normal routine. Will post if not so.

With people I load antivirus defence for (mainly avast Home), I find that better running software team and practice in general operation means better running antivirus defence. So good to know all these things like avast, Defender, Silverlight, Adobe as running as single pack (cause usually find wont run that perfect together in real life), so to get best possible method for my people. And works okay, cause they dont get viruses. And problems kept to minimum, cause they costly, often pay $0 per hour.  :-[

And I always think I might speak too soon, best that way. So try think ahead. They tend to want Adobe. I give then Reader, Flashplayer, Shockwave include Air, but not network share.

First thing when I go check up Defender, I see Silverlight (shove in my face). But seems harmless, small program (4.8mb). Downloaded but havent run yet. Will take any problems to Silverlight thread.

Adobe different matter altogether. Big deal program suite like Microsoft, so MS will try work its defence array in with Adobe. But big Adobe creeps outwards over others ground just like big MS does, so can be problems. After reading Adobe thread, I might put off taking suite any further for time being and just keep one eye on Adobe in forum when I can. Could be intrude on MS defence suite sometime future. Adobe email me a lot of invites and offers. And lots of sites fall behind their constant updating. So cracks can easily appear across software team and I would usual be too busy to keep up to speed on the fly. So try to think ahead.

Sorry any inconvenience.   :)

Windows Defender is part of my Layered Defense along with a HOSTS file managed by HostsMan, Vista Firewall Control and WinPatrol.

Windows Defender monitors the HOSTS file and notifies immediately if it is modified as the latest infections have been modifying it to prevent users from finding help in removing the infection.

Close Windows Defender then go to its portal then select 32 bit and Run it then restart its display interface so that you see the wall with the green check mark on it in the Taskbar:
