Title: Problems installing client
Post by: artanin on March 25, 2009, 05:09:51 PM
I am a admin for a company how is currently evaluating your guys software.  I am seeing some strange behavior.

I had a machine that i installed a msi generated thru the ADNM server, and the machine previously had etrust inoculate on it. There was a massive slow down problem.  After some research I decided to remove avast, then  I used the cleaner tool from ca, and rebooted into safe mode.  I used the avast uninstall util, and rebooted again.  Now I am trying to reinstall avast on this machine, but the msi starts up and bails with out doing anything.

Any ideas?  This is on XP(32) Sp3.

Mod Note: I did cross-post this due to concern that I am on the wrong board.  Feel free to delete from which ever is appropriate.

Yeah, this is more of an ADNM board question, but have you looked at the remote install log in your ADNM console yet?  Could you post that so that we may analyze further?

It's probably something like windows firewall, or incorrect credentials, but it's hard to tell without the log to look at.

*Welcome to the boards too, btw

There are no relevant logs in the administration console, nor are there any relevant (system) logs on the client machine.  The install was attempted from the msi on C:.  This msi has been used successfully on a number of other random test machines.  There was one successful install and removal in an attempt to track down the slow down issue, which has been resolved.  Now I just cant get the thing to reinstall, and at a loss for where to start.  There has been reboots between attempts.  Is there an avast install log generated anywhere that I can take a peek at?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Either I am confused, or you don't understand what I'm looking for.

If you are trying to deploy a package with the ADNM console, then under, "View > Show AMS Logs > Remote Install" You should get a log that tells you exactly what happened when attempting to install on your client(s).

Or did you just copy the install msi file on a client computer and just tried to run it from there, and that's where you're having the problem?

Second option.  Strangely I tried to do a remote deploy and it did work on the machine in question.  The thing that troubles me is that I am going to be licensing this for laptops that are remote, and I wont be able to do a remote deploy.  So this MSI thing has me worried.

Are you saying that you will never have those laptops on the same network as your ADNM server?

Once you push the client out to the laptop, it inherits all the settings, and should work fine.  But, if the laptops never touch your domain, then I guess you can't control them...

You should be able to have them connect to your network via VPN at least, and push the install from there.  It might take a bit, but it will work...

I was planning on opening up the firewall ports and allowing the clients to connect thru a domain setup for this purpose.  I already run both an external and internal DNS server so I am not worrying about the connection between the server and client and local vs remote resolution, but I am about the initial install. Would ya happen to know if this problem has been seen before, or is just a fluke?

Again rsuu123, this has nothing to do with the original post.  Please create your own post in the correct forum for help.

We can't fix more than one problem in one post, especially when the problems have nothing to do with each other....
