I have tried downloading and installing the latest update (I've been without internet connection for 6 months and my Avast is also not doing automatic updates), but received the following error message after downloading
Can’t install VPS update. Errorcodes: Ver: 4.8.1229
SI: 0x00000002
ST: 0xffffffff
LE: 0x00000000
Can anyone help me? also, my automatic update is not working nor is the manual update. I also tried downloading the program again and that also did not work. What should I do?
thanks for any help

You have an old program version 4.8.1229 and since that is mentioned in the errorcodes, I guess you first have to do a program update. The latest avast version is 4.8.1335, right click the avast 'a' icon, select Updating, Program Update, this will do a program update followed by a VPS update.

I suggest an installation from the scratch:
1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and use it for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the latest avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html) version.
6. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.

I have tried doing a program update and it does not work so I will try this solution. I hope it works as I really don't want to find myself with no antivirus software.
Thanks...will let you know what happens.

I cannot uninstall from the Control Panel. Nothing happens when I click on remove/change. I've stopped Avast from running but still cannot uninstall. Shall I just do an uninstall from the Avast website as suggested in step two here?
-
Then start from the next step, but you will have to be in safe mode when you run the avast uninstall utility.
-
how do I start in safe mode?? I've already created a restore point but don't know how to start in safe mode.
-
Booting into safe mode http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml).

thanks. Will check it out but this is beginning to get complicated!
