I want to install Avast Home version on a friends pc who is currently using Aol 9.0. I have tried a lot of different e-mail programs on my machine and had them all working since the setup/installation is easy.
A pc with Aol though, seems quite different since Aol sort of hijacks your dial up and Ie settings. Before I try to install Avast on my friends pc, I was wondering if Avast works with Aol 9.0 and if any of the Forum members could tell me if the setup procedure is any different than with other e-mail programs.

Unfortuantely, AOL does not use pure SMTP and POP3 protocols for email. In essense, it does "hijack" your browswer experience.
However, your friend CAN connect with AOL, then minimize to tray.
IE is then made available for use on the AOL connection.
Since AOL carries the email, even if IE is used, you cannot scan the email anyway.
I did set up my friend's computer to use Avast on an AOL driven system and rely on AOL to use their antivirus and antispam software.
AOL has limited their popups recently to hold on to customers.

I agree with Techie 100%. AOL is, at the basic level, a browser highjacker. I stopped using that over 5 years ago when I realized what they were doing. >:(
AOL is the evil empire of ISP's! (it's not known as AOHell for no reason!) ;)

I guess that's one more "good old days" thing. It used to be that a PPP connection, by definition, meant that your ISP in effect dropped out of the picture once you were connected, other than as your "physical" connection to the internet. My ISP (Golden Triangle), thank heaven, thinks that should still be the case, and operates accordingly.

Are all of you aware that AOL was one of the biggest complainers against Microsoft. Why havent they ever been charged with beibg a monopoly???????

ok i have been on tech support with AOL *ssholes On Line on and off since i installed avast and removed norton because i can't get my web browser for AOL to work properly and when it does other things don't like IMs or music links or games...my girlfriend is making me keep this..i know my sytem is clean finally thanks to avast because norton was not picking up the viruses that avast found and all problems are gone except this...if somebody has a solution other than getting rid of AOL ...tell me please or avast just might have to work around AOL ??? ???

Actually, AOL no longer makes you use their entire client to connect (dial-up or broadband). They now include a dialer program to just connect to the internet. (I think it was included in 9.0SE)
It is also possible to use AOL mail in some other e-mail clients, such as Outlook, or their own stand-alone client, Communicator. (And it's also has decent e-mail detection with McAfee built-in on the server level)

McAfee can not hold even one candle against avast! ... I know because I just left McAfee a few months ago. So, basically, AOL using McAfee is no solution to his problem. :(
