Title: "Not enough storage is available to process..."
Post by: asur on April 10, 2009, 07:10:17 AM
I installed Avast Free 4.8.1335 on a newly-installed system. When updating, manually or automatically, I get the message "Not enough storage is available to process this command". It gets about 80% through the downloads. The full report is attached. W98SE w/ 500 MB, 40 GB (less than 3 used), DSL.

512 Mb of RAM?
Are there that much programs running?

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

I tried to repair as you suggested. It didn't work so I uninstalled the whole thing, redownloaded and reinstalled. That worked. I had read somewhere that sometimes there can be a corrupted package. Maybe that was it. Anyway, it works fine now. Thanks for your input.

Hmm, this forum seems to loose posts! But anyway, for a Win98 PC w/ 320mb RAM, PII, 3,6 gb hdd free space:

OK, up and running with Avast. Pretty straight forward steps:

1. Download two files (to the desktop): http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe and http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/vpsupd.exe
The first is the setup file for Avast and is updated through 4/19/09. The second is the accumulated updates from 4/19/09 to 5/08/09 (or today).
2. Run the setup file: ( http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe )
After setup is run successfully, Avast will try to update and likely fail. Then:

3. Run the accumulated updates: ( http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/vpsupd.exe )
I think you probably will get a successful update notice.

Believe the problem some ran into was caused by using the Avast download manager ( avast_home_setup.exe ) but don't know why it didn't work for you.

I don't particularly like the interface for Avast. Scans are initiated manually; not sure when Avast updates, certainly on bootup. On bootup, it's a real hog for memory when it does its initial scan. Much preferred the control panel for AVG: seemed to have better user control options. Avast seems to need more memory than AVG did when it's resident and active.

I don't necessarily agree with you that Avast needs more memory than AVG, I've had both, and I think Avast uses much less.

As for it being a memory hog when you first start up, it does, but you can change that.  Let me switch over to my other computer, so I can look for the setting, and I'll let you know what to do.

Alrighty, right-click the avast icon in the system tray, and click Program settings, Under "Troubleshooting" click the box as shown in the attached picture.  That should help a bit.
