Hi timyowpa!
Your program version is rather old, so i suggest to download the complete installer of avast! home:
http://avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
Uninstall avast and run the removal tool (you can find it here (http://avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html)) and reinstall it with the new downloaded file - insert your license key (please make sure you still have it, else go there (http://avast.com/eng/home-registration.php)) and try to update then.

Again, the errors that you are receiving seem to indicate that the "server is down" or "can't connect." If your internet connection is working, then there must be a firewall blocking it, or maybe your proxy settings are amiss.
Hopefully a re-install will fix the problem.

If the last post doesn't work a HijackThis Log could be helpfull...

The download link is in the right upper corner of the site.
Run the program and "Do a system scan and save a log file" - post the Log here.
But don't "fix" anything with Hijackthis for the first time...

Ran a quick scan for Malwarebytes and it found traces of a koobface worm. But still, it cannot connect after removing and restarting.
Running a full scan now...
I can get on microsoft.com etc.

Well, I know what it is... I just don't know why it was there, or what put it there.
Anyway, glad it's working now ;D.
Keep everything up to date, I have a feeling that malicious software was what created the proxy server entry that pointed to 127.0.0.1 and the 9090 port. It looks like it was forwarding all web traffic to itself, and would prevent you from getting anywhere on the 'Net that it didn't want.

Hard to say really. I would assume that if you entered any info while this "proxy" was active, that the information could have been copied somewhere. I highly suggest that if it was, that you change your passwords (at least).
As for credit card info, well again, I hope that it was not active while you entered any of that information. If so, it might be a good idea to request another card... I'm not sure what has/could have been stolen, so just keep an eye on your accounts. If you can, requesting a new card would be a good idea if you think this was running while you were entering sensitive info online.
