Title: Avast! 4.8 SBS Premium installed but now no Windows Updates
Post by: ctrx on April 16, 2009, 03:51:47 AM
Hello everyone.  Last Friday I installed avast! 4.8 SBS 2003 Premium and managed to get all of the clients installed finally and the updates for avast! are being pushed out to the clients.  With the security on this clients network I simply have the Standard Shield and Outlook portions enabled on the clients.
Now it is Weds. night and I began logging into the PC's to run Windows Updates since last night was "patch Tuesday".  What I've found is that on all of the PC's Windows Updates fail every single time on every update available.  Why am I posting this message here you ask?  Because the only thing that has changed on these PC's is the fact that avast! Antivirus netclient has been installed.

Has anyone else had an issue with avast! somehow preventing Windows Updates from running/installing.  I can get to the Windows Update site and select the updates, I can even go to the MS Security Bulletins and manually download each/every update and then double click and install the update.  But going thru the actual Windows Update site errors out.  I have removed avast! from one of the PC's and it gets the Windows Updates with no issues.  Hence why I am now posting on the avast! forum for help.  Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

maybe u can check this website  http://www.wsuswiki.com/WSUSTroubleshooting (http://www.wsuswiki.com/WSUSTroubleshooting) to troubleshoot WSUSand see why the updates get blocked when Avast is installed

i dont have wsus running here yet, so i cant tell further if it works, all i can say is that the automatic updates that my clients take from internet do work fine

Thank you for the reply.  However, we do not use WSUS and all PC's pull their updates directly from the Microsoft Windows Update site.  I plan to go back onsite later this afternoon to see if removing the clients from other PC's will allow the Windows Update to run properly.  It just seems to me that installing avast! AV should not prevent this from happening but it is the only change that has been made to these machines.

ok i misread but still u can use that website to check for the wu logs those are the same as for wsus since its the same technique just using a middleman server  like the avast ADNM ;)

on that website there are details about where u can find the logfiles created by the update service on the local stations
maybe u can find something in there

indeed installed avast should not block updates, its not intended to do so... so maybe in those logs are some more pointers to see why suddenly the updates fail

That is correct.

Also, if you're on a domain environment, I highly suggest using WSUS if you can, it makes keeping the computers up to date a lot simpler!

Without a sample of the windows update log from one of the computers, this is sort of hard to troubleshoot.

As avast does not have a firewall yet, I don't see why it would "block" the windows update site, so that's probably not the problem.

I don't see why it would prevent updates though either.  That's a new one.  Keep us updated on what you find, so we can help more!

Oh, just a quick and easy way to see your windows update log files...

Click Start > Run.

Type "windowsupdate.log" in the box (without the quotes) and hit enter.  Do this on one or two of the computers that are failing to see what exactly is failing.

Thank you for the replies.  I'll check the Windows Update logs ASAP and see what I find.  I'm hoping it's a Windows "feature" or something I can get resolved quickly.
