Hi MLJ!

Which is your operating system?

Do or did you use any other antivirus?
If yes, how did you remove it?

Which other security software do you use? (Firewall, antispyware,...)

Two antivirus systems on one computer (especially if it is norton) often produce problems.

My advice:
Remove Avast and Norton via the control panel.
Then download and run the Avast! uninstall utility (http://avast.com/ger/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and the Norton removal tool (http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039).

Reboot your PC.
Install Avast.

Hope that everything works again now... :)

A computer at our church was infected with Privacy Center.  I was able to remove it in Safe Mode running these utilities:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

SUPERAntiSpyware Free
http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

Norman Malware Cleaner
http://www.norman.com/Virus/Virus_removal_tools/

I also ran this in "normal" mode:

a-squared Free (formerly a² free)
http://download6.emsisoft.com/a2FreeSetup.exe

but it was totally wiped out by this point and a-squared didn't find anything.

I hope this helps!
