Post by: polonus on May 11, 2009, 11:27:22 PM
Hi malware fighters,

You can scan a suspicious url against this: http://www.unmaskparasites.com/security-report/
and also against: http://www.blacklistdoctor.com/bld/diagnose.php

Enjoy,

You don't need the extra features (see image), the purpose is to allow the entry of a suspect site and have it return a report on the site.

The paid option is to monitor a site you own to alert to any malware, etc. we are suggesting it is used just for scanning purposes. This was one I checked in another topic earlier where it confirms an avast detection, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=45186.msg378356#msg378356 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=45186.msg378356#msg378356).

Why not use Web of Trust (WoT)?

Check the reputation rating of your favorite site:

I give up on WoT due to a lot of false positives... too much precaution, sometimes, FUD also. It's just my opinion, as everything else ;D

Howdy bob3160,

From the reactions in this thread there are still users that do not know the difference between a real time malcode link checker (plug-in) or online scan and a so-called reputation scanner depending on a periodical scan or even not these performed and reputational or malware feed back from users.
So in my opinion finjan is a reliable one, Exploit Prevention Labs Link Scanner is a reliable one, DrWeb's av link checker only works the direct links, but will miss redirected malcode, McAfeeSiteAdvisor has been run into the ground by McAfee's, WOT is a reputational scanner and the site in question might be a site fallen victim to malcode and lost its reputation in that way, for scandoo I really do not know what it scans in real time,

I tested Blacklist Doctor by entering hxxp://www.youareanidiot.org/ and here is the report:
http://www.blacklistdoctor.com/bld/diagnose.php?URL=www.youareanidiot.org&scan_id=6043

As you can see, it doesen't detect any viruses and other site scanners finds malware:
http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/youareanidiot.org?ref=safesearch&aff_id=0&premium=false&suite=true&client_ver=2.9.258&locale=en-US
http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/youareanidiot.org
http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=http://youareanidiot.org/&hl=en

Why not use Web of Trust (WoT)?
I already use McAfee SiteAdvisor AND Web Of Trust. But anyway, Having both of them is a good idea because sometimes, they lie so the other one is ready to defend it. I see McAfee lies more than Web Of Trust but sometimes Web of Trust lies...

Hi Donovansrb10,

You are telling only part of the story, because blacklistdoctor says this site is blacklisted by Google there, so it is blacklisted period and it does not give an all green for it , how can it miss it, when it gives it blacklisted?
Do you know the difference between a reputation scanner like MacAfee's SiteAdvisor and WOT and a real time scanner like finjan's?.
A reputation scanner knows that a site once was blacklisted, a realtime scanner scans the actual site in real time (so when you use it) against the scanner server softwar. similar scandoo.com does. So a reputation is only as valid as the user input and the actual scanning might be anywhere between 0 and 90 days ago, google scanning same story, results cannot be trusted fully!
So, do your homework here,

Additionally, reputation scanners are only as good as those giving the reputation.

This can, and most likely does, include those who may have grudges as well as reputations given by malware site owners & malware writers.

Reputation scanners are not to be trusted.

Well personally I would look at the company it has in the TOP 10 to see how much store I would put in the results. That however, doesn't make a jot of difference, even if there was great store in the quality of the awards, WOT still isn't a real time malware scanner and that after all is what this topic is about "Another online link scanner like unmaskparasites, blacklistdoctor!" which scan in real time for malware.

Creating "the most BUZZ in today's society by contributing to the "zest" and competition of 2009" means nothing to giving accurate results.

"Buzz" is just sheep following other sheep from the hype of advertising and other media sources.

I know that but the site itself doesen't detect malware. So if those site scanners didn't exist then you would be in trouble.

Hi Donovansrb10,

In a way you were right, but one of the first and foremost rules in malcode land is never rely on just one scanner, the virustotal concept is the best proof of this principle, so always use a couple of link scanners to be certain a link is safe, like a combination of Exploit Prevention Labs Link Scanner, finjan Secure Browsing, DrWeb's av scanner plug in, Web page security report scanner)s) and natutally the in-browser protection of the avast shields. Then as a last line of defense use fx or flock with NoScript and RequestPolicy extensions installed, if malcode then crosses the moat and drawbridge to enter your "castle", well I mean machine, either your luck was in at that moment or you have created the infection intentionally,
