I use Vista and XP equally.

XP is as comfortable as old slippers http://farm1.static.flickr.com/134/332418128_fdf2d650ca.jpg?v=0  (http://farm1.static.flickr.com/134/332418128_fdf2d650ca.jpg?v=0) and Vista is like wearing a velvet Smoking jacket:

I'll be on XP until I decide to build a new computer. That's the only time I change OSes.

I use XP Home and XP Pro.  :)   I set my work PC for best performance -

right-click My Computer > Properties select Advanced tab >
Performance select Settings > Performance Options select radio button - Adjust for best performance

Vista 32bit on the way since the OS now seem to become the most favored option with users.

Linux only. Currently a dual boot with Debian, and Linux Mint 7. I had Vista for a short period of time, when I bought this new computer, but alas, I accidentally erased it when I was partitioning for a dual boot. Silly me.

My PC is Vista^^

I like this because...umm....I just like it^^

I dnt get why many people still choose XP over Vista yet Vista has more features and more stable^^(thats wat i only think though^^)
Though its a memory pig, that problem is easily conquered by a RAM over 3GB^^

This is only my opinion though^^

(therefor i would like to see support for Win7 soon in the new Avast versions)

I suggest u wait with the Vista installation until Win7 is out since this is a huge improvement over Vista and ofcourse its the newest OS so u can use it for a couple more years again...

But i still run WinXP on netbook which is also ok.

Nope, in my case, it was all my fault.

When you have the option of using the free space you cut out of Vista for the new install, or the entire hard drive for your installation, and you choose the later out of habit, and not thinking, you deserve what you get, which is to wipe Vista off of the machine.

I did have some time this morning to reload, so now I'm back to dual booting Debian and Vista. This is my home computer. The office computer is pure Ubuntu (currently Jaunty).

My Vista system is barely 3 months old and I am reluctant to update it to Windows 7 as I still have so much to learn on Vista but I hope there will be an update to Seven when it becomes available in 2010.

I wish I could sell the old XP Home system but nobody wants XP anymore around here.

As for me, I'm too old to change my preferences.(http://www.kolobok.us/smiles/standart/umnik2.gif) I started with MS-DOS 6.22, continued through Win3.x - Win95 - Win98 - Win98SE - WinMe - WinXPSP2, and now I'm on WinVista.

Do I like Windows? I don't know. I have never tried a Linux (I'm not good at their jargon) or a Mac (it's a piece of exotica here).

A PC!

I've tried ubuntu, it's a good start for a user friendly linux, but I don't think if it can ever be good like Windows, I've used 2000, xp, me, 98, seven and I really like Windows and as what I said in my last post I use and like vista, ubuntu is just a good product to use in some moments for example get back from a computer hard drive that cannot boot or access internet when windows is not installed or removing locked files :)

What YoKenny says. I find this more and more to be the case.

There used to aversion to Vista but not any more. Vista - slow, much more services, Registry 3 times size of XP (correct me if I'm wrong) - so hard to run mean and lean like you can with XP. But I have to go Vista as well, soon as is convenient.

Does Ubuntu disk still have great memory tester at launch page? I would get the disk out now and then and run all the memory modules around the place through the check.

Yes, all Ubuntu Live CDs have Memtest.

If you decide to check your memory, do at least 10 complete cycles, to put a good stress on the RAM.

(When I check memory on a computer I'm cleaning up and donating, I let it run overnight.)

Army migrating computers to Vista
May 20, 2009

By Gary Sheftick and Delawese Fulton

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, May 20, 2009) -- The Army is migrating all of its Windows-based computers to Microsoft's Vista operating system to bolster Internet security and standardize its information systems.

The systems change, which includes swapping Office 2003 for Office 2007, is set to be completed by Dec. 31.

MS Office 2007 is a pig. I threw greedy pig out when tested my patience too far. No disrespect to you YoKenny.

At the time I advised downgrade 2007 to 2003 until MS truly managed to patch up missing logic.

Why put program on market with totally separate file formats as default (docx, pptx, etc...) Then techs have to run round the place reconfigure so everyday people can use without difficulty. Why not set as default compatibility logix - portability, interoperability - amongst Office suite first before release of 2007? Surely common sense. I can understand proprietry strategy to close out competitors, but your own people? And does MS need $$ that bad. Why not give your people a break now and then Microsoft?

Lets hope thats what they will be doing with Windows 7. And cost of MS Office suite is outrageous. They should bring the price down.

^,

Unless there's some exotic reason a person has to use MS Office, a good alternative is to download OpenOffice.org, and then change the default formats to MS Office ones under the Load/Save options in the Options Menu.

I've used OOo for years, for documents (including .pdf  on the fly), spreadsheets, and presentations with clients who all universally use MS Office, and they've never known it.

The best part is that OOo is part of the open source community, and it free (as in beer). More info here, if anyone is interested...

@mkis
I have no need for MS Office 2007 nor 2003 nor OpenOffice.

If you can't afford MS Office then you don't need it.

When I worked there was a big push to standarize document formats between platforms and have easy transport between them.

See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Document_Architecture

The nice thing about Standards is that there are so many to choose from.

Afraid I'm stuck with MS Office on desktop. I have various licenses 2000 through to XP Office and 2003. I quite like 2003, where at least they had a shot at their own graphics program with Picture Manager. But still a bit too chunky and labouring. Every Office suite they put out is far too expensive considering their command of the desktop market. Monopoly demand should scale into lower prices.

I try to use MS Office as least as possible on internet, where I think OOo will most of the time be the better option, providing the apps are supported. Google docs is a good example where I think some OOo apps come into their own.

I used to hate vista and wanted to go to XP. But i'm getting used to it. I just hate the fact that nearly most games are incompatible. I would like Windows 7 for the speed, But I looked at pictures and the interface was ugly  :'( and theres compatibility issues again.

I think you find around here laptop with Vista is easy most common choice for personal. I advise this as good option. Laptop with Vista will often be no deposit pay over time.

Vista is probably Windows best foray into graphic interface since Windows 3.1/95/98SE winning run, though many disagree until they actually buy and master Vista.

If you have Vista 32bit and clutter your desktop (like download and run from desktop instead of, say, Program Files) and bloat out your Start Menu | Programs | Startup then your computer is gonna crawl.

Usual buy Vista with one year paid antivirus - Norton, Trend Micro, etc... Must do something when sub runs out at years end but many users delay because they still paying off terms and not willing to shell out any more cash. Very common situation round here.

I just wait until the Windows 7 is out for see if its better than Vista so if it is then i will switch :). For the moment i use Vista. But i gived my vote to Windows 7 if i was having 2 choices i would say Vista also :)

I don't mind it, but it reminds me of work too much. If I'd had it as a home user, I'd probably find it superb. XP without the glitz.
Title: Re: What OS do you like the most & what OS do you use?
Post by: mkis on June 02, 2009, 05:13:15 AM
Windows 2K is a great network system but there were compatibility issues, particularly with third party devices and drivers. MS put out a Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) which users were expected to comply with. Very proprietary MS and, like Tarq57 says, angled towards people at work. There is no Media Player like there was with Windows Me, which was released about the same time, and truly exposed MS bonehead attitude to graphics (compared to Linux apps - open source - and Mac of the same vintage).

2K was MS other project developing out of OS2, a network line of OS, that remained underway at the same time as they were trying to take over the world with Win95. You could not upgrade across the lines, say from Win98SE (I think a very underrated system) to Win2K, nor could you set up dual boot between 98SE(FAT32) and 2K(NTFS) (I don't think so but I could be wrong). Most people had grown used to the user friendly interface of 3.1/95/98 line and may have been peeved at MS being so institutionally-oriented in pushing people into MS Network environment. On top of that WinME got a rep as being an out and out pig (which was unfair) and much of the ground gained with Win95 began to wilter away as MS came to be widely seen as bent on world domination, copying Mac, elbowing Netscape out of the way, and trying to take over the internet. In many ways, 2K was their Waterloo. They backed down and put out XP, which was initially able to format across the two lines (FAT32 and NTFS) and in many ways became proved one of their best efforts, further denigrating 2K and truly discarding it to Darwin's dustbin. But as Tarq57 says 2K was a very strong little system. There is much to like about it. A much more secure system than the FAT line of OS, which were starting to become infiltrated by all and sundry as people took their fury out on MS for being so arrogant and overbearing. MS are still struggling to temper the antagonism directed at them over that period, and 2K has unfairly shouldered much of the blame.

Edit - I think you can still load XP onto FAT32. I haven't tried, and I've only seen it done on the very early versions of XP (2002/3). But the option to do so has remained.

With a back-up and recovery strategy, no data should be lost. Unfortunately for most, they don't get the benefit of this until after such a disaster.
