Title: My PC is a disaster... 6885 MBs left...
Post by: !Donovan on May 25, 2009, 02:13:17 AM
...PC takes about three minutes to boot...tryed removing some from msconfig...
...PC drained from Microsoft...Over 10000 MBs wasted by them...that are not needed...
...PC only has 6885 MBs Left...including the C:/, D:/ and G:/ Drives...

Solutions That I Thought Of:
Put Microsoft stuff on a huge jumpdrive. (I wonder how mutch I will need and how mutch that would cost...)
Disable Everything that is not nessary at startup. (I don't know what is nessary and not nessary...)

Help "WITHOUT" reinstalling Windows would help.

First turn off Indexing as that really slows down the system.

Get TreeSize Free:

With all the stuff I have on my XP Pro system I still have 26GB free.

Hi Donovansrb10,

I would suggest some basic steps if you haven't already done them:

- Uninstall all programs from the add/remove programs list (in the control panel)
- And I mean all unnecessary programs!!!
- Download CCleaner and delete all temporary files and data not required
- Unfortunately Micro$oft leaves a litany of bollocks files which you don't need
- Consider burning all your photographs and vidoes onto a DVD or CD
- Do a thorough scan of your computer with Avast, MBAM and SAS
- Sometimes malware and spyware can siginificantly slow your system down

And finally ask some of the REAL experts like Polonus, Tech, DavidR or Bob for some advice.

I am sure they will be able to assist you further.

Good luck!

You can thin down Windows OS in Add/Remove Windows components in Add/Remove Progams if you havent already been there.

-= Try TuneUp Utilities (http://download.cnet.com/TuneUp-Utilities-2009/3000-2094_4-10206416.html), its a pay to upgrade type software so I believe, you may be able to use the startup manager even without a license.. The startup manager has a detailed info about the necessary, optional & useless startup entries..

I also find that the boot up and login time is painfully long on my machine (Although I know this a problem with not enough RAM)

I get around this by hibernating instead of shutting down. This means that when I turn on the pc I can use it almost straight away instead of waiting ages for it to be ready.

I also use as many programs as possible portably (running from a memory stick)
This means I don't have to install them locally and they are usually faster (don't really know why)
For example:
I can load Firefox portable from a memory stick and have it running LONG before the IE window appears

@YoKenny: Its running now.

@Avastfan1: I'll try uninstalling all the Microsoft .NET Frameworks and the Microsoft Office Enterprize 2007 & then redownloading them to my 20GB jumpdrive I got.

@Mkis: I been there but I want so many programs, I'll try removing & downloading to my 20GB jumpdrive.

@chronoboi001: I'm already had it & my free trail about to expire.

@spg SCOTT: I'll try hibernating.

After I followed the instructions on how to sucessfully install the jumpdrive, it won't work.

Video made so you can see the error I get: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8pHJ8FYhog

@Avastfan1
You need Nobel Prize winner grasp of rocket science to mess with .NET Frameworks.
But if thats what you want, you will need refer to MS knowledge base articles.

MS Enterprise 2007 is a monster program, even with just the Office 2007 suite.
You could start working with a larger HDD (160GB or least 80GB) since you want so much onboard.
Otherwise virus play havoc if onboard.

@mkis

Where possible, I keep software on removable media unless terrible need to run.

I have 29MBs left on my 20GB jumpdrive now. I guess I need to buy a better jumpdrive or even a hardrive that has at least 480GBs. But eh, at least I saved about 5.34GBs on the C:\ Drive!

Wonder how much the hardrive or jumpdrive would cost. O_O

7.5TB LaCie 5big Network 5-BAY RAID | Gigabit Ethernet (RECON) ~ $1,070.00

I don't think I can afford that...

You can look around your locality even. HDDs are going quite cheap even the new ones. With market depressed I can buy 500GB (IDE or SATA) new for not much over $NZ200 which is about $US130 but from what I gather you get HDDs new on clearance even cheaper over there. Seagate Barracuda are good.

You seem to know how to set drives up, use jumpers, and so on, so take your time deciding how you want to set up. You will have to install an operating system and you might find that your existing install CD will no longer activate so will need to advise Microsoft that you are making hardware changes. They have cracked down on multiple activations - to enforce one license, one machine - and are using 'genuine advantage' in conjunction with Windows update to clear out fraudulent installs.

You have been warned enough about keygens, so you probably know the dangers there more than I do. Why waste a good thing on crap software when there are plenty of reputable techs around who can provide you with a good legitimate OS and you can set yourself up to pick and choose amongst (or rid yourself of) Microsoft software development, without the worry of being chopped off at system root. I imagine Vista become a good buy soon if not already. Just look around and ask. Its a good time to buy.

With LaCie, I think the 500GB externals are the way to go. Very cheap by NZ standards. You would be lucky to buy 7.5TB LaCie 5big Network 5-BAY RAID | Gigabit Ethernet (RECON) in this country for less than $NZ4000 ($US2500).

Ok, I got all of Uniblue's software. Inserted the key I got from my friend and did full scans. When all of them were done, I selected remove all for all of them. Well, now my C:\ Drive has 7.78GBs of space left. D:\ has 6.55GBs, G:\ has 468MBs left and F:\ has 3.34GBs left. Looks like Uniblue actually works when you give a key. :)

Make that 250GB externals, no 200GB or 100GB, I dont collect movies...

For anyone that might be interested, this is our local trade and exchange for computer components...not always cheapest option, but best online auction ever and forever...well, so we here hope!

I didn't click with Uniblue at all I'm afraid. But I didn't spend much time there. I have to say now looks okay at a glance. Yes, looks like you did well cleaning up your systems.  :)

I'm not against any product key good fortune that might come your way. Good luck to you. But if I was to go chasing keygens, then I think mostly I would just be making extra work for myself. Here is an example of what can turn up legit if you want work within the trade - the Nero 6 suite (Showtime and StartSmart) was Nero's best ever CD/DVD player/burner before they shifted to the pay / activate subscription scenario that they have since stuck with. They gave me Nero 8 disks with purchase of DVD/RW players and I just threw the disks away because they 3 month trial before pay to subscribe, whereas my Nero 6 I can load all day long for the whole world as many times as I want for ever and ever. All my clients have the option to have this loaded for free as courtesy service. It is total self-contained, no 'fish-hooks' into it or out from it despite links to firmware companies. I usual deselect all NeroPhotoshop from default and just stick with video functions. This is what legit tech can do for you - granted you do have to walk the boundaries a bit because no-one can honestly afford some of the prices of software nowdays. But searching for keygens is real tin-can tech around here.

I'm looking to try Firefox again soon. NoScript and WOT look likely. I may build another 32bit specially for it since hardware prices are even cheaper than I thought. In the meantime I am trialing Google Chrome mainly because I am sure people will be wanting it. I am starting a thread on Chrome.
