Title: Installed 4.8 Pro, Gmail *still* won't load
Post by: DogmaCat on June 01, 2009, 03:25:41 AM
Hello -

Recently, I installed avast 4.8 Pro and, afterward, my gmail account would not load after I signed in. I found this topic -  http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=45229.0#lastPost (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=45229.0#lastPost) - and followed the instructions (I ran the VSCleanupTool as well). When both avast and McAfee were removed from my computer, my gmail would load, but, after I re-installed avast, I had the same problem that I started with - gmail would again not load.

I am running Windows XP.

Help!

Did you also run the Avast uninstall utility?

Welcome to the forums.

Do me a favor, try accessing gmail using this link: https://mail.google.com/ (https://mail.google.com/)

That is with an S in httpS

https://mail.google.com/

If that works, then you're dealing with what I'm dealing with: the avast Web Shield killing my browsers' performance  :(

No problem. I could go to that link, open the "create an account" page, all normal.

[Edit] non-pertinent q removed.
bahman2000, why are you posting to this users' thread?

What link are you talking about? The one that I posted :) ?

I am responding to this user's thread because I too have problems loading GMail with Avast Web Shield turned on. The workaround that worked for me is to either turn off Avast Web Shield (which as you say is not ideal) or go through HTTPS, which does not get scanned by Web Shield.

Ah. Your intention was not clear; thought you were posting for help in the wrong thread.
Intention clear now. Carry on.

bahman -

Yes, I can access gmail through the https link.

Tarq -

I didn't run the avast uninstall utility - I just uninstalled through add/remove programs in the control panel. I'll try uninstalling again with the uninstall utility and then re-install and see what happens.

Thank you for the forum welcome, by the way.

DogmaCat,

I'm biting my nails in anticipation - did you get this fixed or do you still have a problem?

This article provides the steps to remove SecurityCenter from your computer.

Sometimes, McAfee won't be completely removed if, before, you do not uninstall Avast, including the use of its "Uninstall Application" if necessary (www.avast.com/eng/faq-install-uninstall-avast.html).
