Title: Vista issues?
Post by: Yezinki on June 20, 2009, 02:22:52 PM
Hi there,

Installed Vista on a new Dell machine.

It was fine till I installed Vista & Drivers.

1. To my surprise somewhere along the line, when I went on line to update it, checked My Computer > C > Properties ……the icon of Disk Cleanup disappeared on both drives i.e. primary active & primary?

2.  How can I view all files/folders, seen/hidden as medium sized icons & not tiles?

3. The display is 1900 X 1200………which is real small since I use an external USB  Logitech comfy laser KB & mouse………When I  try decreasing the resolution……the desktop icons become distorted & names which are underlined get blurred/darkened…… on reboot I get a windows message displayed that 1900x 1200 is the ideal resolution for this machine so please change…..how can I fix this issue…..How can  I decrease the resolution , without  destroying the awesome display /colors/fonts?

4. My Sony Vaio has great 1680 X1050 display……….easy to read etc………...desktop icons, fonts all have a super display despite that it uses an Intel graphics accelerator vs. this which has a 256 MB graphic card.

5.  How can one view the total Commit Charge/Page file size, on the bottom of task manager as in XP?

Any help to resolve these issues would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

Yezinki.

2. Go to your folder options and check the 'view hidden files and folders' button, And there should be a bar at the top of every folder which will change size.

Thanks Husk.

CP> Folder Options> Check show hidden folders....correct?

You mean View?

That I know, isn't there any single command that changes all folders/files from Tiles to Medium sized icons?

open a folder or explorer window and set the icons to what you want...then press alt to get the menu bar to pop up.

Go to Tools > Folder Options > View > click Apply to folders.

open a folder or explorer window and set the icons to what you want...then press alt to get the menu bar to pop up.

Go to Tools > Folder Options > View > click Apply to folders.

Apply to Folders is dim/unhighlighted unlike Reset Folders??

It is if you go to Control Panel > Folder Options to change it... but if you open a Windows Explorer window/Folder and change the icons to whatever you want with the slider....then go to the Tools menu like I said.. It shouldn't be unhilighted.

Are you using the Windows Driver for it or the Vendors Driver?

You can try NVidia's newest driver for that card here http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_notebook_winvista_179.48_beta.html

Uninstall your current driver then reboot before you install this one.

Start Menu > "All Programs" > "Accessories" > "Ease of Access" > "Magnifier"?  :-D :-D
OR make your text larger in your browser
That or maybe try the new driver and lower your resolution.

If you use Firefox you can go to "View" > "Zoom" to make your text bigger in your browser...

If you use Internet Explorer 8 go to "Page" > "Zoom"

Well did you try an even lower resolution?  Different resolutions will enable different refresh rate options usually.  Aside from trying even lower resolutions... I'm at a loss.  I'm not sure why the image quality is deteriorating like that.

You could check your power settings and screen brightness and contrast I suppose.

2. For IE fonts should I increase dpi or decrease resolution or??
Title: Re: Vista issues?
Post by: Negeltu on June 20, 2009, 11:12:04 PM
1.  Not sure what you mean about how to align icons...

2.  For IE don't forget that you set your zoom size higher.  Making your resolution higher will make fonts in IE web pages smaller.  Making your resolution lower will make fonts in web pages larger.
Title: Re: Vista issues?

Classic icons.

Still not sure what you mean.

You can align your icons to grid.. or auto arrange by right clicking on your desktop and going to "View".

You can also choose icon size there.

You're actually both wrong. It's still there, it was just renamed ... :)

Run task manager, select the performance tab and at the bottom under system it will show your total pagefile size and the amount being used at the moment. The value under pagefile(lef side) - amount of system ram = the amount of actual pagefile being used ...

I think i understand(you know a screenshot would be nice) ... :)

Am i blind and stupid or does it actually show THE SAME THING(the current amount of virtual memory used) as in XP just that it's in percentages now ??!

EDIT: This is so weird lol , does Vista show the amount of virtual memory used down there or just the physical amount of ram being used ?  ;D

When are they going to start naming things properly ? The page file usage in task manager is actually the virtual memory size so why name it like that ? Or Commit Charge for that matter ? Weird isn't it ?

EDIT: Interesting, in win 7 it's just called Commit ...

Physical Memory is the actual RAM installed in the machine.  What is shown on the bottom right of the taskman in Vista is the total RAM in use.

Yeah i know what physical memory means, it's just that i wasn't sure MS means the same thing as me lol. ;D It's bloody hard to understand what MS mean when they change the wording in every OS version. I just checked and it's the same in Vista and Win 7(on the bottom) ... But the Page File usage is now called just Commit. Still annoys me it's not called what it really is VIRTUAL MEMORY SIZE, wake up MS. :)
