Title: Best ad text for avast - show your creativity!
Post by: Vlk on May 21, 2004, 12:33:40 PM
Hi, from time to time a thread on this forum is started by one of the mods instead of "regular guys". That's when we need some help from you. This is such an occasion so now you have the chance to show your creativity.  :)

We're looking for the best text to be placed to the avast entry at this site: http://www.microsoft.com/security/partners/antivirus.asp
(we would like to replace the existing text which we feel is not teasing enough ;)).

The importance of this page will grow considerably in the next few month as this is the page that WinXP SP2 sends you to if you don't have any of the recognized AV's installed... And as far as we know, that's still about 27% WinXP users (believe it or not...).

Let's make most of this page! Have fun! :)

Thanks,
Vlk

Version #1:
avast! antivirus software is based on comprehensive ALWIL Software scanning engine available since 1988.
avast! antivirus features advanced multi-layer protection for files transfered via e-mail, Peer-2-Peer networks, Instant Messaging, webpages and optical drives, providing high security against viruses, worms, trojans and even spyware.
We offer avast! antivirus in multiple editions, providing protection for Home computers, PDAs and for large corporate networks running Windows, Exchange or ISA Servers.

Ok this is it,but you can remove that spyware text. I have added it because avast! detected lots of spyware files as Trojan-Gen on my PC and i thought it would be nice to include this in the description.

Version #2:
avast! antivirus software is based on comprehensive ALWIL Software scanning engine available since 1988.
avast! antivirus features advanced multi-layer protection for files transfered via e-mail, Peer-2-Peer networks, Instant Messaging, webpages and optical drives, providing high security against viruses, worms, trojans and even spyware.
We offer avast! antivirus in multiple editions, starting from free Home Edition for personal use, PDA Edition and Server Edition for large corporate networks running Windows, Exchange or ISA Servers.

Don't know how to correctly express that "starting from" text ;)

Version #3:
avast! antivirus software is based on comprehensive ALWIL Software scanning engine available since 1988.
avast! antivirus features advanced multi-layer protection for files transfered via e-mail, Peer-2-Peer networks, Instant Messaging, webpages and optical drives, providing high security against viruses, worms, trojans and even spyware.
We offer avast! antivirus in multiple editions, starting from free Home Edition for personal use, PDA Edition and Server Edition for large corporate networks running Windows, Exchange or ISA Servers. In addition, we offer free 24/7 support by experienced avast! users on our forums or via our support e-mail.

Sorry, but i have no idea on where to put the text that avast! is a skinable antivirus. Maybe they'll think that its not so "professional" if its capable of changing skins, who knows ??. CoJo,thanks for support idea :)

Put something about it being one of the only free to home users antivirus programs.  That is a major strength that gets people in the door and eventually turns them into paying customers.  I know for a fact that when I start my company that I will be purchasing Avast Server edition.  Avast creates customer loyalty.

Yeah i thought about that too :)
What do you think about my second version?

RejZor, I really like Version 2!
The only thing I would add is something about the incredible support from Alwil itself and our wonderful forums...both are great for experts and novices alike!
Many forums are not very kind to beginners...

I agree with CoJo ... plus, to RejZoR's second version, add that the interface is skinable (the tease Vlk suggested) which makes the program a little more personal to the user.    :D

And yes, many forums are not very kind to new users. The support given on this forum is outstanding!    :D

Jam & Technical also wrote ads with many very good points in them.    ;)

Maybe all 3 could be combined with the other suggestions added in also.    ;D

I listened to CoJo's idea about support (check Version #3),but i still don't have idea on where to put that avast! is skinable antivirus. Version #4 calls for help :)
Title: Re:Best ad text for avast - show your creativity!
Post by: S.Z.Craftec on May 22, 2004, 02:53:47 PM
Yeah, I like this one:

Quote
Sorry, but i have no idea on where to put the text that avast! is a skinable antivirus. Maybe they'll think that its not so "professional" if its capable of changing skins, who knows ??...

Well, then it's really stupid to have all those skins. Don't get me wrong, I'm not offended in any way, but then it's really unprofessional to have all those skins available if all of you are affraid what someone would think of skinning feature. Let avast! have only one skin, some professional or better say, totaly-basic-plain one. Skinning then makes this product like childs play...  ::)

We shouldn't be kids any more people... we have to stand straight behind this antivirus and defend it like it's defending us. We shouldn't care what some bunch of jelaous reviewers from some stupid magazine is saying... THIS IS avast! antivirus !!! DO NOT ever forget that ! And all those features puts that antivirus tool above all others... right to the top. If someone thinks that this antivirus is not so effective just because it can change it's skins, then forgive me, but I have to say, he is so stupid that I can not believe... just take a look at all those NOKIA cell phones... changeable skins and all those features doesn't make that phone any worse than other cell phones out in the market... Nokia is always Nokia, best of the best. Maybe this example is not the best one to compare with, but at least it gives you the picture...

avast! is the best - with skins or without and I don't give a damn what few stupid freaken reviewers thinks about that. CoJo taught me that I shouldn't listen just few bad words about my work, I should listen all those that likes mine and Martin's work, and I should listen to my inerself...

Seriously, I'm not gonna be mad... erase all those skins and I promise, this antivirus will be same like before... so strong and powerful, nothing can make it look weak. We just need to present that antivirus in best possible light girls and guys, not to be affraid what they're going to say if we write this or that... screw them all (not bad word, I mean with screwdriver  ;D) !!!

Avast! RULEZ !!!!

Ok ok i get the picture :)
Now try to somehow put this skining feature into my text, because i have now idea where or how hehe
Title: Re:Best ad text for avast - show your creativity!
Post by: S.Z.Craftec on May 22, 2004, 03:19:55 PM
You don't have to put that inside your text to make avast! better looking. avast! is so good even without mentioning it... if someone likes to change skins, he will find download section... no big deal at all...

I'm not very good in writing texts, so I'll leave it to you guys...

Make them want out avast!, make them want it so bad...
Title: Re:Best ad text for avast - show your creativity!
Post by: RejZoR on May 22, 2004, 03:32:18 PM
Yeah, but this text will end up on MS page where the SP2 security center will take you if you'd have no AV installed. We should somehow write the best stuff of avast! so others could say, this is it by just reading that text. I can try to add skinning, but this would be the last thing to add i guess. Everything good about avast! was already written. Ok i'll go back to work ;)

thanks for including my little suggestion ;D

just a another observation...and I mean no offense, ok?
change incrimental to incremental ( and I have to use a dictionary all the time! and English is my native language ;))
and, possibly, after "optical drives, ..." drop the , and use "which provides high security against viruses, worms, trojans and even spyware."

RejZor, it's really very good text. You have done a good job with this!

Ok... it's my turn again...

I'm here for something else, but I'm sure Vlk won't see this, and of course it will just stay just one more crazy idea made by me...

If it's so important (and it is) how should that text look like on Microsoft web site ( http://www.microsoft.com/security/partners/antivirus.asp (http://www.microsoft.com/security/partners/antivirus.asp) ), I think that LOGO is also very very important... Alwil logo is great, no commnets, but on that site, it just looks so simple and naked... of course comparing to other products listed on that site...

Here are two examples... first one is old, and second one was made by me. I would be really happy to see that logo on that site one day...

Please Alwil, presentation and first impress is very important. We don't want avast! to look cheap on Micorosoft web site... if you care about that, you'll consider my version of logo as possibility.

Thanks in advance !

First - original logo that should be replaced with new one (IMHO):

OK, this is my version, and I think it should stay proud in there (btw, it's not too big, I measured everything, few other logos on Microsoft antivirus listing are 120x120 pixels too):
Title: Re:Best ad text for avast - show your creativity!
Post by: RejZoR on May 22, 2004, 04:42:19 PM
Hehe you won't belive, but i thought about this too and i think you'd be the one who'd make the best logo :)
Current one looks to small compared to Trend Micros which coughts your attention...

Yours looks nice, but what if it would be a big "a" ball style?
Something like this one, just with Alwil Software text or with avast! text. Simplistic and very recognizable. Just my 0,0002 euro ;)
Title: Re:Best ad text for avast - show your creativity!
Post by: S.Z.Craftec on May 22, 2004, 04:47:32 PM
No, no... I just didn't want to touch original Alwil logo, and it should be original Alwil logo. We can not change originality of  logotype... it's just not fair to designer of that logotype. I just gave my little touch and redesigned it without changing original form.

Letter "a" inside ball is not logo at all. It's just avast! icon and it stands for avast!, not for Alwil. Those pictures on Microsoft site represents company name, not product name. No hard feelings, but I think we should stick to original logo form.

If we just enlarge it, we didn't do anything big. We need presentation, better presentation. I think that picture I posted really presents Alwil in very good professional light... if not, just forget it guys...

People are like bees... if something is sweet and colorful it's for sure more interesting than something black/white... of course it shouldn't be too colorful...

Sasha, dont take critics as something bad :)
I just think the logo should be as the one which present the company on all products, webpages and so one. Its the same for other companies on that page so i think it would be the best to just enlarge it so it will be more visible. Unless Alwil guys are thinking about changing the logo hehe... ;D

No, I must disagree with you on this one my friend. I didn't change company logo. Logo is same like it was before.

You don't want to change logo, but you also sent ball with "a" inside... that's changing logo too  ;D.

Well, I don't care any more. If they want it, they can take it, if not, then there is no point to change original small one either... I just suggested how to make Alwil presentation better, 'cause I can see they need something "eye-catching"...

Maybe somone from Alwil should check this thread. I want to hear suggestions about my text and your logo. Also what they think about all this.

If we use your logo (most probably hehe ;D ) than can you make the upper and left edge of logo a bit more "strong" or more visible,so the logo wont blend too much into the white page.

Title: Re:Best ad text for avast - show your creativity!
Post by: Vlk on May 22, 2004, 08:09:27 PM
First, let me thank you for the input. You guys are great. ;D

About the logo... yeah, I somewhat assumed that it'll catch your attention and eventually become part of the discussion.

The framed logo that's currently on the page was an accident -- the frame really shouldn't be there, and the logo should've full size (i.e. 120 pixels wide).

Maybe I'm old-fashioned but I'm still a big believer in monochromatic logos (maybe with some little twist in it). Look at the big brands - Nike, Mercedes, Coca-Cola, Microsoft, Intel, HP, IBM, Nokia, Sony, Kraft, Nestle, Marlboro etc. etc. etc. (just to name a few) -- they ALL have monochromatic logos for decades and seem to be actually very happy with it! Colorful logos may be nice but usually have no long  existence...

Since the presentation is in fact related to avast! my idea was really to put there the classic avast logo (that's attached)... Maybe too simple but definitely identifying...

BTW it's funny how logos are now pretty much business article like any else... you can buy a logo for a couple of bugs on sites like http://selectlogo.com  :)

Colorful logos ? This guy I posted in here should be just presentation on Microsoft site, not permanent Alwil logo... but, anyway, rejected - ok.

Yes you can buy logo for few bucks... true. But, why doing that ? I made logo for free... my good will. Maybe it would be better if I start to charge for my drawings, hehe  ;D

Funny, but truth is, people think you are much worther if you charge for your work, not if you give for free. If it's for free then must be something stupid and ugly... if it's expensive, then it must be something good...

Ok, my starting price is 1 dollar... anyone with better offer ?

About the logo: the monochrome is too simple but, as you said, great logos are monochrome. Maybe the majority of avast forum pages are blue and the blue logo does not call the user attention  8)

Is this supposed to be a reaction to my post??? :o
Did I say anything like free=bad?? You must be kidding me -- after all, avast4Home itself is freeware...

What I was saying is that it's funny how every and each company has a logo - there must be like millions of logos out there... :)

Anyway Craftec you think that the picture on that page shouldn't be the alwil/avast logo? That it could be something else??

If so, I'd prefere the avast style instead of the alwil style. The thing is, it's quite hard to push 2 brands - and the word "avast" already has some reputation (in contrary to relatively unknown 'alwil').

thanks

Here's the text I'd put there - a slight modification of RejZor's one:

avast! antivirus is based on the comprehensive ALWIL Software scanning technology available since 1988. Featuring fast incremental updates and advanced multi-layer real-time protection of all infection vectors, it provides high security against virtually all kinds of malware. avast! is offered in multiple editions, starting with the FREE Home Edition for personal use, Professional Edition with extra features, PDA Edition up to the Network Edition with centralized administration for large corporate networks running Windows, Exchange and ISA servers. In addition, ALWIL offers free 24/7 support on their online forums and via support telephone/e-mail.

Vlk, that is very professional...
but I do have one question (don't I always?!)
Can you not at least capitalize the A in avast! I know it's not usually capitalized, but in writing it in this text form, it would look better...jmo, of course! It also would balance out the capitalization of ALWIL, FREE, and the other first letter capitalizations.
New readers may think it is a proof reading error...

I'm sorry that I am so "picky!" ;D
I just want readers to be impressed and come to avast! and stay and buy  ;)

I am new to the forum but I can tell you my opinion and what influenced me to try Avast!.  The fact that it is free sorry if that sounds crass but I was tired of paying NAV for their crap.

I plan to upgrade to pro because I like the extra features but the power of choice is all important you are leaving it in my hands to choose weather or not to pay anything.  I think that it needs to be closer to the top of the paragraph.  I mean really who is going to sit and read all of these.  Grab their attention, right at the beginning with the "free" word or make the little avatar, or emblem, or whatever it is say under Avast! "free home version".  Modifying the Avatar to say that might be the most eye catching.

I know that I would scroll through them looking for something that caught my eye, and other Anti-Virus's have more name recognition(sorry) SO leap from the page and scream try me.

IMHO,
Kezz

Sound good, but... first two versions were without mentioning skinable feature... then everybody asked to put that also into text, 'cause possibility that GUI can be changed by the user itself sounds very nice... then RejZor added something about changeable skins feature... then Vlk removed skin changing feature from text...  ;D

Cheers !
