I have not used Avast for at least two years, but decided to put Avast Home on my laptop. It has always been my fallback AV, and I have put it on several friend's computers without any problems or infections. I am using it with the Windows XP firewall and Super Antispyware pro.
Since I have been away for awhile is it still true that the detection rates for the Home and Pro editions are the same? At first I was thinking that there was a note on AVC to the effect that there was a difference, but found that was about McAfee instead of Avast.
I have been very pleased to see the advances Avast has made in detection rates.
Thanks.
Regards.

Detection rates are essentially going to be the same as they both use the same virus signatures and anti-virus engine.
The pro version does offer the script blocker which is effectively another shield and is more configurable/flexible. Avast Home V Avast Pro differences http://www.avast.com/eng/av4_version_comp.html (http://www.avast.com/eng/av4_version_comp.html).

Thanks, David, that is helpful.

You're welcome.

The same detection rate is what makes avast free a serious antivirus, i.e., you can use avast free with confidence.
-
Yes, and with more confidence these days.
I am a very safe surfer, and it has always been one I have used with confidence, but now the latest on demand tests by AVC indicate it is at the top. Only the FPs were a problem.
If I were not so cheap I would feel guilty using it for free.

For sure the Script Blocker and PUSH Updates can do some difference.

The stronger competitor of avast Pro is avast Free ;)
For sure the Script Blocker and PUSH Updates can do some difference.
There are others, scheduling, automated actions, configurability.
But it does not affect overall protection.

I'm all agree with those comments, using Avast! Home Edition never give any regret for me ;D. Sure I wanna give a try to the profesional one, but since I have no credit card ... nothing I can do :(

You can test the trial-version for 60 days
