Title: clean email message
Post by: luieg1 on May 26, 2004, 06:08:20 AM
I set the email setting to put a message in clean and infected incomming emails.  It's not working.  There are no messages in my incomming mail.

I have the free version.

Any advice?

What E-mail client do you use? Did you configure the correct resident provider?

I use outlook with 2 accounts: 1 POP and one IMAP.  The IMAP is the default account.

I ran the mail wizzard and set mail.messagingengine.com for my SMTP server and

pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com for my pop3 server.

I'm not getting the clean message tag even though I set it for such.

Do you think my email is not being checked?

Just one note:
(full) Outlook is protected by the Outlook/Exchange provider
Outlook Express is protected by the Internet Mail provider

From your post, I assume you are using Outlook Express, i.e. the Internet Mail provider. So, did you change the setting of this one (to include the notes into clean messages)?

To see if your e-mail is protected, you can open the resident protection window, select the Internet Mail provider and send/receive an e-mail. The "Last scanned" field should show you what was checked.

I use outlook, not outlook express.  What should I do to get the incoming messages tagged (see above)?

1st I would ensure that Outlook is shutdown, some time ago I read that even though Outlook has been closed the process is still running in the background to speed reload. Check Task Manager and ensure that the process is ended.

2nd ensure that you have the Outlook/Exchange provider enabled and ensure Internet Mail provider is terminated.

3rd run Mail Protection Wizard again.

I would also suggest that you browse the help file again on "Setting up the Mail Protection" section. You may want to do this first as it could help.

If I use (full) outlook, when setting up the email exchange server, can I just use the "set up manually" or do I have to enter the SMTP and POP3 information.

It doesn't matter, these settings are not used for Outlook.

Do you see avast bitmap when you start Outlook ?

When I open outlook, I see a green avast pucture that shortly disappears.

I receive no tags in my incomming mail (see above).  I have set it to provide tags.

I'm not sure if my mail is being scanned.

I just reset my mail settings.  I still do not see any tags.  Where will the tags be?  Do I have to change a setting on outlook to see them?
Title: Re:clean email message

No, the notes are simply appended to the e-mail message.

What does the "Last scanned" item in the resident protection window show when you receive an e-mail? When you turn on the insertion of the notes even into outgoing messages and send a message to yourself, is the note there?

The last scan was my last email checked, so it is scanning my mail?

So it is the tags that are acting up?

OK the outbound scan works, but not the inbound.

Any suggestions?

just rechecked.  The inbound tag doesn't work, but the outbound does.  How will I know if I get an infected message?

If it says the e-mail was checked, it should be OK. (You can try to send yourself Eicar test file to see the virus reaction - www.eicar.org).

Hmm... is the inboung messages option still on? I mean, was it stored correctly?

When you receive an infected message, a "Virus found!" dialog should appear.

It's weird.  I'm sure that the inbound tag box is checked and there are formats for 4 messages.

Does this help?  I set the outlook exchange to custom setting and check the inbound tag box.  Then, when I roepen the on-access scanner, the setting has gone back to high, instead of custom.  are there any patches that i should download?

Hello, I'm Technical and I sent you a test mail...
Do you see any attach note at the end of the body message?

I just got the test message.  I see your outbound tag.  Mine creates an outbount tag, but the inbound tag is intermitent.  I only see thin inbound tag on some messages, nit all.  Even then, I only see the tag the second time I go back to the message, never the first time.

For the first time it's clear, and for the second time there is a note? Ohhh, it doesn't make me a sense. Could you try following "trick"? in avast4.ini file find "[MailScanner]" section and into this section insert following line: UseAlternateRtfSyncing=1
Has something changed?
To disable this "feature", you can set that variable to 0 (i.e. UseAlternateRtfSyncing=0) or delete that line...

Pavels, can you post more, I mean, I want to fill the 'Understanding avast4.ini file' forum and I need to know a little bit more about this 'undocumented' feature UseAlternateRtfSyncing. Thanks for your colaboration  8)

Technical, UseAlternateRtfSyncing=1 tells avast! to use other mechanism for inserting notes into emails in Outlook. The reason is that on some configurations with Outlook the inserting of notes doesn't work properly. Is this enough?  ;)

I don't know... The users' question will answer if it's ok.
Anyway, I do not understand what is RtfSyncing ? Does it concern with Rich Text Format?
I copy your explanation into the major avast4.ini file thread  ;)

The avast4.ini file is under C:\Program files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Data folder by default. Open it in a text editor (Notepad).
The section [MailScanner] can be found by searching exactly this part of the text, including the [ ].

Add a line with the following text:
UseAlternateRtfSyncing=1

Boot
Restart the system.
Send/receive emails.
Will it work?

More information about the avast4.ini file you can see here (http://www.avast.com/forum/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=1647).

Technical, you are right - RtfSyncing is concerned with Rich Text Format. In email you have typically saved both Rich text (HTML) and plain form of message. When you modify one type of message, RTFSync is the right function to synchronize text of message to the second form...

Here is an update.

I added the line UseAlternateRtfSyncing=1
right under the [Mail Scanner] section.

No change.  Should I go back and take that line out?

I think you are on to something though.  I only get the tag on the 2nd time viewing a message.  However, there are certain types of messages where I cannot see it at all, especially when it is an HTML email like from a store or newspaper article in HTML.

I know my scanner is working because I set it to provide detailed desctription, which I can see by the taskbar.  I know I have the tag box checked.

This is not a major problem for me, but I'll keep you informaed if you want to use me as a test case.  I'm sure others have the same problem.

More tonight (USA time)

OK there is a change.  I forgot to reboot before after I added the line.  It looks as if when I get a message now, I can see the tag on the first time viewing.  I fixed that part.  Nut I can still only see it on regular text messages.

I sent myself a message using outlook (HTML), and I cannot see the tag no matter how many times I view it.

I sent myself an email using hotmail, and I saw the tag on the first viewing.

Ladies and gentlemen, I think you did it.  Don't ask me why, but things seem fixed now.  It must be due to adding that line.  When I tried it this afternoon (after turning on my computer from shutdown), it worked as it normally should.

If you are interested, please send me a test email lgortiz@fastmail.fm

Thanks for all of the help.  I'll come back if it acts up again.

You're probable sick of me by now, but there is still one problem.  I just got two email tests.  I saw the tag in one of them, but not the other.  It may have to do with the formats because I've been seing the tags until now.

Whoever emailed me from Technical [avast@ig.com.br], I did not see the tag.

I saw the tag in bob03160 [bob03160@comcast.net] message.

Maybe we can figure out what the difference in formats are between the two.

Just to answer: I sent my emails in text format.

Maybe bob sent his in HTML  ::)

Thanks

Remember, I have a tag for both receiving and sending.  The tag you saw was that the one generated when you received the e-mail or, was it the one generated to let you know that my e-mail was clean when it left here?

I  did not make any changes, and I saw the tag on your last email...see my reply.  Something must have changed on your end between the first and 2nd email.

I think my settings in outlook are to view HTML because I see HTML messages when they are sent to me, unless they are sent with regular text.

Luieg, Please, enable HTML emails into MS Outlook account settings.
You're reading my HTML email in text format...  ::)

Be sure your email notes were 'written' in a different way than mine.
Mine is short, just: avast! Free Antivirus (http://www.avast.com): Inbound message clean with 0422-1, 27/05/2004.
