@shiw liang
i think no.. you have to do it explicitly by downloading the installer. because of what i read(4.X version may continue for some months)

...ur avast won't automatically update to 5.0 beta... beta is for testing... I think...
-
By the way, this might be off topic but, would anyone consider posting some screenshots of previous avast versions so I can see the GUI progression?
I can't seem to find any avast 1.0 or avast 2.0..

maybe its too outdated... so that no one uses them... In some ten years maybe u'll find no avast 5.0...
-
That means I should uninstall my avast 4.8 and reinstall avast 5.0?

But not now. It would be a lot safer to use the FINAL or RC of the software.

No one has any details of the avast firewall, but since this is an essential part of a firewall that is worth the name 'firewall' then it will.
As I replied to the same question you asked about another firewall.
The whole point of a firewall is to effectively stealth your system from outside, all good firewalls do that as a matter of course rather than as an option.

@ David
Yeah I saw it. Thanks. ;)

With 8 or 9 shields + a firewall now there will be less virus which enter our PC!Isn't it?
Hehe!xD

It also depends on the user^^
If the user is careless enough, no matter how good the antivirus is, it will render ineffective^^ Since no antivirus provides a hundred percent protection^^

Will this be a public beta?
-
Will this be a public beta?
isn't beta versions supposed to be for the public to test? ???
-
Will this be a public beta?

Yeah. Sometimes they could release it only for the old avast users (called Evangelists) first and then make it public.

Yeah. Sometimes they could release it only for the old avast users (called Evangelists) first and then make it public.
An other thing are the non-public or also called internal alphas/betas/release candidates which are only for the employees of the company (in our case Alwil...)
-
So, there r also internal betas? Thought alphas were the ones to be tested inside the company...
-
I don't know how Alwil/avast! handles this, but all is possible...
both Alphas and Betas can be public or internal! ;-)
(for example Opera offered a public alpha of its browser (version 10) - which is now already in beta stage...)
-
Well its not that easy to build a anti virus and security suite im sure. So let them to get time and do it great ;)
-
...they r all mad mad mad
Mad because of? ???
they have internal and public alphas betas n all...
although according to my computer books alphas are supposed to b tested inside the company n betas by the public...
-

What is wrong with it? The company has the right to decide whether they'll have it as closed or open beta. Betas are not always for public use.
-
thats wat's maddening about computers...
-
Alwil is known for releasing stable products both betas and final, I think that they are busy testing it internally.
-
thats wat's maddening about computers...
Closed Beta's are most of the time internal beta's, the Engineers/developers tested it and didnt found many or big bugs anymore, most of the time the Closed beta is going to Partners,Trusted Community Users, Other people with knowledge about computers and stuff, they will find more bugs then, if bugs are found in the Closed beta they will be resolved, most of the time a Public Beta will come then (where most of the time the most bugs will be found).
But i cant wait for it ^_^ :D.

No doubt... but, some of them are in vacations there ;D

Just to find out, clarify is this the official statement from AVAST?
Someone in another forum quoted this statement & mentioned that the Administrator of AVAST forum said so.
-
Not exactly, it's more of a guess based on the avast! blog:
The beta testing of avast! 5 will start in a couple of weeks (roughly by the end of July / beginning of August), so if you are interested to give it a try, please check back soon as I’ll be posting the details here on the blog as well as on our forums.
avast! blog >> avast! 5 is coming soon! (http://blog.avast.com/2009/07/20/avast-5-is-coming-soon/)

Thanks for the reply.
By the way, is +AdDicT+ the moderator/administrator of this forum?
-
No problem,
+AdDicT+ is an avast! user like many of us here, helping others :), not an actual alwil team member (you will see an alwil team member - it says that under their names)
-

Patience ;D

At China,now is the 8 August,where is avast! 5 beta? ???
-
The key word in the blog was 'roughly', meaning that the dates are not definite.
I would rather wait for a well built product, than 'force' the release of a product that is not ready, purely to achieve a 'set' date...(even though there officially was no set date)
see my post above...

Thanks to all concerned,we will still be using it after avast! 5 is released.:D
-
A stable program is better than a faulty soon-released one ;)
-
well all right, good to know my Chinese friends are patient enough to be patient, but the undersigned has now already officially uninstalled Avir* free, and out of shere impatience he installed AV* Free to play with until Vlk sees it fit to let loose 5 beta.
how's that....world..?
nevertheless have a nice day everyone

Avira AntiVir 9 VS Avast! 5,who is the winner?I'm look forward to their's showdown ;D

Avast for the win. Even with Avast 4.xx free vx Avira 9.xx free. Avira lacks some of the most crucial defenses especially, protection when you're in the wwweb.
-
For example, the page protection and internet protection? ???

Yes, Avira miss them on the free version.

I can't believe how people are "chopping at the bit" and simply can't wait for version 5!!... ::) .... as opposed to those who are the ½ to 1 percent of 98/ME users who probably wish it would NEVER come AT ALL ... :-[ ... I say to those who have nothing to do but continually ask when it will be available... patience is a virtue you know... and I would add that you'll be just fine with Version 4 for little while longer... ;D ... so while everyone else acts like life is going to end if version 5 isn't available yesterday my message to the AVAST DEVELOPERS is TAKE YOUR TIME!! ;) ... and I would add... THANK YOU AVAST for supporting WIN98 for as long as you have... I know it's an old O.S. but it still works great for me and I like the added flexibility in some respect that I have with it for what it's worth... I for one will be sad to see Version 4 go... :'(
-
Those people using win98/me need to upgrade their OS. Those OS's are over 10 years old and dated.
-
Feel sorry for the Win98 users though....
avast! continues to update definitions for version 4.8 for about a year or so...
I dunno the details but I hope Version 5 would be compatible with the said OS...even though Vlk said that its not gonna be and its final...I hope they'll change their mind...^^ ;D

This already was discussed many times, but I again only can tell you that you should be happy that Alwil decided like they did...
If they would keep support for these OS we would miss new features and speed increasements which are only possible on new OS...
Avast! would constantly get bader compared to its competitors which don't have to pay attention to make all functions work under Win 98...
It is like it is and it is like it should be. So be happy and rejoice at the new features avast! 5 delivers! ;)
kind regards

Will all the versions have free trails (i.e. on the Final Stable release)?
Is there any information, about the download file sizes of each version?
Thanks.

I think that there will be trial versions of all three products... possibly again 60 days or something like this...
I could imagine that the antivirus will be about 40 to 50 MBs - but thats just what I expect ;)

It would seem to me that any software developer can continue to keep an old version like in the case of Avast-4 available and have a "limited" virus data base update available on a minimal server basis with the disclaimer that certain new virus protection signatures may not be available if this were the case as well as certain limitations impacted by the legacy systems. I think WIN98/ME users would be perfectly satisfied with this approach in the knowledge that the last version of Avast-4 would remain static and unsupported beyond the limited AVS updating that would continue to be available on a minimal server left for this purpose.
Avast would not have to be concerned with any new features or applications but just simply make the old version available to users with the whatever limited AVS data base signatures that could still be made available. Users would simply need to agree to and sign a statement that it is understood that protection would not be "state of the art" and potentially subject to some vulnerabilities inherit in using the older Avast-4 version that would no longer receive program updates but just AVS updates limited to the older Avast-4 version. The Avast developers would not have much added work it would seem since program updates would not be done so the only attention needed would be to supply the more "limited" AVS data base for the older Avast-4 version. And there would be relatively so few users that all that would be needed would be a very "cheap" server or possibly a "hook" in the AVS data base software application that could redirect to the "limited" AVS data base perhaps. From a user with admittedly limited knowledge of a lot of the technological aspects it does seem to me to be potentially feasible with very little cost overhead as I describe it.
Just food for thought... ;D

5 beta, where are you?
-
There is a closed beta1 testing going on, it isn't fully functional or as stable as would normally be associated with avast betas but this really is a major step away from version 4.8.
So it really isn't ready for open beta testing yet, when it is they will announce it in the avast forums, so calling out where is it really isn't going to bring it closer. It will be announced and released when Alwil believe it is ready, so continue to monitor the forums for announcement.
-
Are you kidding?
I lie awake awaiting the announcement that it is ready. ;)
-
Why would I be kidding, it serves no one to release a beta early. Beta testing security software carries risk. However, we have been spoilt in the past with the stability of the avast betas and should really only be installed on test systems or be prepared to have to completely recover your system from any possible security issues.
-
Are you kidding?
No... there is a closed beta testing running.
-
I know all of this fellows.
Just injecting what I thought was humor.
I was wrong apparently.
-
No. We didn't follow your humor, at least, me. I did not understand.
If it is humor, let's laugh :)
-
Sorry, this might be off-topic. Why are there so many people here in the forums that has this "I'm a llama" below their pic? Emepror's New Groove fan?

Sorry, this might be off-topic. Why are there so many people here in the forums that has this "I'm a llama" below their pic? Emepror's New Groove fan?
Because it is the default text.
People can't change it (20 posts at least) or don't want to change it. I'm not sure about what happens.
-
I only prefer nice user interface software
I like the outfit of avast 5 much more than 4
however I won't test the beta because i'm not an advance user ;D
so i'll wait for the final one. they'll release it in october, won't they?
-
Since avast 5 will have better detection rate, will the false positive rate also go up?
-

We hope not. They will work to this do not occur. But, who knows...

ok will not cry out any more and will just stare at the forum

Realistically, heuristics will contribute to increase in detections, but also, False Positives. But I trust ALWIL, I believe, heuristics wont go berserk!

how about auto-heal for free users, will it be available or an action must be taken?
-
how about auto-heal for free users, will it be available or an action must be taken?
It won't be available. Automated actions are reserved to the Pro version (of the antivirus or the suite).

The only thing a Win 9x/ME enthusiast should ask from avast! regarding v 5, is that ther be an on access and PERHAPS BUT NOT NECESSARILY an on demand scanner -- NOTHING ELSE! NO REALTIME. ETC.
While it is patently clear that DOS, 3.x, 9x/ME are outdated, I CANNOT EVEN INSTALL SPYWARE WRITTEN FOR THESE NEWER, SAFER SYSTEMS! Try it with Win 95 16-Bit and Netscape 0.86.
For the record, the DOS based systems all the way up to 98 SE, are provably subrecusrsive and thus safer by a factor of at least 16; those who say otherwise are provably full of MS!
