Title: Updates OS - Current version of avast! is not working.
Post by: Dirkenberg on August 18, 2009, 06:58:53 PM
Hi,

I had a fresh installation of Vista Business and after setting up the necessary drivers, i proceed to download and install avast! Home. The installation went smoothly but upon re-booting the system, there's a pop up message that says along the line :

"you might have recently updated my operating system and the current version / installation of avast is not working. You may need to re-install the program"

This pop up message will appear upon every boot / reboot of the OS. I do not encounter this problem previously on Vista Business so it's quite mystifying to see it this time round. The initial boot scan was working fine and i was able to do the usual updating and setting via the control panel. The only difference is that the avast icons are not appearing at the task bar, besides the error pop up message.

Seeking advice and solution..

Thanks.

Hello Dirkenberg

you mean to say you downloaded all the drivers and the avast installation file from internet without any protection(antivirus)?

Hi,

The OS drivers for my HP laptop were already stored in my other partition. I merely installed them from there.

The installation file for avast! was downloaded from the site directly and yes, w/o running any virus scan in the OS, since it's a fresh installation.

Thanks.

you did a bad thing.

you might have got a spyware something like that. anyways, can you post the screenshot of the error. to make sure whether it is genuine or not. while posting use additional option to upload a file.

I have already uninstalled the application from the system. Before i re-install and capture the screenshot of the error, i have listed down the log file upon cancelling the downloading of the avast_home_setup.exe file from download.cnet.com.

I realised that the operating system listed at the top of the log is Windows XP. Is that referring to the OS detected in my system? Could this be the reason that the error message is related to the OS version?

if you have uninstalled avast,

do not use the cnet file or the online installation file. use the required full installer(including the language) from here : http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

disconnect from the internet.

install avast

select yes if asked for a boot time scan.

restart

let the boot time scan run.

if it finds anything, move it to chest.

login.

should the same previous error pop up, come back.

I hope you at least have a hardware router with built-in firewall, if not, go get one. They are not very expensive these days. I got mine on sale for 40$US.
