How can I get the audible notification when an auto update has been performed ?

You can go to Control Panel > Sounds and Multimidia applet
On the tab 'Sounds' you can select any wav sound for it.

Another way to the same place:
Right click the avast skin > Configurations > Sounds ...  ;)

Appreciate the help, but this is a voice that comes on and tells me that the database has been updated.
It comes from the AVAST Update site and has nothing to do with my setup

What do you mean?
The voices are there because your settings said so...
Do you want to disable them? Please, I cannot understand what's wrong. Can you rephrase?

I found the problem. There were no wav files assigned to the different settings. It is now working fine.
