Title: Avast Home Edition 4.8 help
Post by: kevo on September 20, 2009, 02:08:30 AM
Hi,

I have Avast 4.8 Home Edition installed. I seem to have a virus or some kind of malware on my computer, and it is preventing me from running Avast. My On-Access Scanner is running fine, but when I click "Start avast! Antivirus" to do a scan, nothing happens. I also have Ad-Aware, and that won't open either. I can browse the web, but a lot of sites (including the avast home page) redirect me to spam sites. I haven't had anything like this happen before, and I can't figure out how to get rid of the problem. Any ideas? Thanks!

Okay, did all of the above. Installed Malwarebytes, started a scan, then it crashed on me. Tried to reopen Malwarebytes and got error message: Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." Went into Malwarebytes folder to click on the application itself (instead of shortcut), and nothing happens, just like when I try to run avast and ad-aware.

Download the superantispyware online scan
http://www.superantispyware.com/onlinescan.html
Then run a full scan and quarantine everything it finds.
Then post back a log

Okay, superantispyware didn't turn up ANYTHING . . . but I didn't update the definitions first. I've updated the definitions and I'm scanning again. Thanks for the help so far, this is getting frustrating!

Reinstall malwarebytes and go to malwarebytes folder.Rename mbam.exe to something random and see if that works.

okay I'll try that next, thanks. In the meantime, I was able to open the avast user interface by going into the avast program folder and clicking on the .exe file directly. I tried to scan and it crashed. Tried it again and scheduled a boot-time scan. This seems to be working. We'll see if it turns something up.

Boot-time scan turned up nothing, renaming malwarebytes didn't work. Still can't run malwarebytes, avast scan (apart from boot-time scan), or ad-aware. Still getting sent to spam websites randomly. If this is not a virus, any idea what this could be? Ugh. Thanks for the help, everyone.

I think its time to use some free rescue cds:
These are bootable discs u must insert them during startup before windows starts!!!
It's best to make the cd's on another computer
Avira offers a free one from there website:

http://www.avira.com/en/support/support_downloads.html

And dr.web has a free one to:

http://freedrweb.com/livecd/?lng=en

U will need burnable cd's

Follow the instructions.

if you are using the live cd's, then go for dr.web, it has an option to clean up files. change the settings as required in the setting menu.
